Biography
When I met Moonrise, they told me she didn't have a heart. She certainly looked the type, I could tell that she had been a warrior since the moment she was born. There wasn't an inch of her body that wasn't covered in muscle, and her legs were coated in scars. It was unbelievable to think we were the same age, born in the same moon. She rarely spoke, even when I insulted her or flirted with her, which I did in equal measures. If I had not seen her blood flow, I might have believed she had no heart as well.
I was frequently suspicious of her. Enthralled, but suspicious. She disappeared sometimes, and while many in the pack were content with her excuse that she was visiting family, I knew fully well she hated them for selling her off as a warrior to another pack. So when she stole away into the night under the cover of the new moon, I followed, thanking my small size for the stealth it offered me.
I had picked a bad time to follow her. It was quickly evident that this would be one of her trips where she would be gone for a few days, and my legs shook with the effort of keeping up with her long stride. She slept during the day, and walked under the cover of night, low to the ground as we prowled across territory that belonged to other packs. She showed no fear, and I wished I could be a bit closer to the warrior.
Over three nights of walking, I watched oak trees switch to pine. The smell of the forest was different, somehow richer, and I was almost uncomfortably cold. On the third night, it snowed. Moonrise did not stop, and I assumed we must have left inhabited packland, because the sun rose, and she did not slow down. I nearly whined at the effort, especially as the gentle slope turned to a steep climb. She came to a rest, finally, at sunset, sitting calmly on the edge of the slope we had climbed.
"You may as well come sit with me. I'm quite surprised you managed to make it this far." I sat with her. The silence was absolute, snow catching on my pelt and coloring it the same as hers. "A story. It's short." She said, readjusting,
"Once upon a time, there was a young wolf. She was a good fighter, but her mother resented her, because the young wolf looked too much like her father, whom had never been kind to the mother. So she offered her daughter to the highest bidder. The daughter feared a mate, but instead was given a position. A warrior in a neighboring pack..."
Her story continued for some time, winding through her time in her pack. Her exasperation with me. This place, where no pack had stepped paw, and how she wanted to steal away to it someday. I thought surely she would kill me then- because I was the only one who knew where she would go. But then she did something entirely more surprising.
She laid her head over mine and offered to let me stay. My blood flowed backwards in my veins, but my response was instantaneous. There was a lot of rumors flying around Moonrise, and they were not wholly incorrect.
But they all got one thing wrong. My mate has a heart.
