The pup had left...
The pup had walked away...
It had gone to do something...
Artemisia stepped fluidly out of the brush, wicked fangs bared as she glared at the rather gorgeous female wolf. A golden-brown coat, and the loveliest blue eyes imaginable, the dame was quite a beauty to behold. How unfortunate that her heart held all the ugliness that her appearance lacked.
"Foolish pup," the stranger giggled to herself. Artemisia had seen the way her eyes glinted dangerously, had spotted the slight baring of jaws and the flexing of muscles. The damsel was bad news, and the juvenile shouldn't be anywhere near her.
"You know, talking to yourself is the first sign of insanity," the she-wolf spoke, her voice quiet as she whispered the words into the strangers audits. The dangerous being hardly had time to flick that innocent glance over their shoulder before they were on the ground, maw burying itself into the dirt. Artemisia let her head droop, glistening ivories mere moments away from ending the life of the insufferable, evil she-wolf. It was then that a gasp rang out.
"Hey! What are you doing! That's my friend!" A high-pitched voice rang out, and both she-wolves stared up at the pup, whose maw was dripping with water. His soft, light-brown fur was standing on end, dark luminaries wide with fright.
"Pup, listen to me--" Artemisia began, making the mistake of taking her attention off of her victim. A shove, a grunt, and the golden-brown dame was fleeing into the shadows of the brush, Artemisia lying upon her side on the hard dirt. Instead of chase after the stranger, she turned her gaze to the pup. "Come here--"
"Stay away from me!" The whelp yelled, voice growing higher and louder in a frantic manner. Its eyes roamed the area, before it turned around and began to flee. The she-wolf merely let out a sigh before dragging herself to her mitts as she started after the juvenile. Knowing the stranger was still out here had her constantly glancing over her shoulder, constantly pausing and checking her surroundings.
Oh, how foolish she was to do such a thing.
It was the yell of panic, of horrible panic, that drew her attention. The whelp had veered off of the path home, towards a river that was nearby. The plop of something hitting the water. It had all happened so fast, the feeling of the branches smacking her face as she rushed to the scene. That familiar dread lacing its way through her being as she watched the pup, off in the distance, get dragged underwater by the current.
It never came to the surface, no matter how long she waited.
She had plodded back to camp the next day, ready to bare the unfortunate news about how she could have saved the pup, but didn't--
Artemisia woke, blinking rapidly as a dry, emotionless chuckle left her maw. Slowly, she made herself sit upright, tremors and shudders wracking her figure. "That one again," she murmured to no one but herself. The shudders grew stronger, until she bowed her head and closed her eyes.
"Dammit, I feel like throwing up."
