The sky is soft with sea mist as you make your way down a winding path flanked by sparse grass and salt-weathered fence posts. The call of the ocean grows louder, waves rolling in steady rhythm, crashing against rocks somewhere out of sight.

Past the last bend, the beach unfurls before you like something out of a storybook, driftwood sculptures, tangled kelp, and sun-warmed sand dotted with feline shapes. Some dart away when they spot you. Others stay put, tails flicking lazily, eyes half-closed in the morning sun.

A faded noticeboard creaks in the breeze nearby. One paper reads, “Coastal Colony: Do Not Disturb.”

You pause at the edge of the boardwalk, watching a sleek shape slip between the rocks.

You sit quietly in the sand, cross-legged beside your open carrier, letting the sounds of surf and wind speak for you. The scent of salt and seaweed hangs in the air. Gulls wheel overhead. You don’t call out. You just… wait.

Movement catches your eye.

The bully gives up and turns back toward the colony. The tom slows, panting softly as he skirts around the beachgrass and spots you. He pads closer, steps cautious but hopeful, ears flicked low in defeat.

Then you feel it: a tug on your bag.

You look down.

A second tom has unzipped your side pouch and shoved his whole head inside. A triumphant mrp! tells you he’s found something interesting. Probably your snack bar. Or the sandwich. Or both.

He looks up at you like what? it was open, then flicks his tail and hops into your lap uninvited.

The soft creak of the front gate gives way to the gentle hush of windchimes as you step into the garden. Climbing roses frame the porch of the old homestead, and just inside, the scent of warm milk and cedarwood hangs in the air. A slender woman greets you with a knowing smile, her hands dusted with flour.

“Welcome, welcome,” she says, pushing a lock of silver hair from her eyes. “You’re just in time, the kittens are in that perfect stage between nap and nonsense.”

The woman gestures toward a woven rug near the fire, where a scattering of toys lies forgotten among tufts of fluff. "Go on, take a seat," she says warmly.

As you lower yourself to the floor, the rustle of your clothes and the scent of something new draws tiny eyes your way. One by one, little heads peek out from behind armchairs, baskets, and draped blankets.

“You’ll get a feel for their nature soon enough,” she adds, pouring herself a cup of tea and settling nearby. “They always show you who they are.”
