Howlers are wolves with excellent rating in howling.And wrestlers bascially the same thing,but with wrestling.
On -FMC you have those 2 competitions and only best and dedicated ones win-you must howl/wrestle every single day during FMC cause if you don't you will get disqualified and nothing can get you back into game.Many(like me)sometimes forget-it is painful :''')
You can rate wolf for 50 mush per category(categories:howling,wrestling,disposition{this last determines how wel wolf will listen in battle/explore;goes from rebel to obidient-I don't kee track of it,but it really comes in handy to have obidient wolves in PvPs).With 50 mush you will get what's called generic rating it says if your wolf is bad,below average,average,above average or excellent at howling/wrestling.But...Even thou it can say excellent it does not mean it will preform well nor that it will be in top 25 :/ :/ :/ so it's not very accuarte cause values vary a lot and under excellent you can find losers and winners :/ that leads me to second method.
2nd method is rating with an apple per category-expensive,but precise-highest rating is 50.
There is an item called Eagle Feather-when you use it on wolf it will use generic rating on howling and wrestling and disposition-all of them,generic rating.Item can be found in mountains,the birdwatcher has it and you need to have enough dominance on wolves in expore team in order to get the feather.Or buy it ^^

So,I am not rich enough to rate wolves with apples,nor I am that good,nor I keep track of my holwers and wrestlers ^^''''''''' however I usually use FMC as rating area-in case I don't have any good howlers from before-there you can tell by their results how good they are :D I have one SV girly ^^
And about wrestling,I take a generic rated female from my den and breed her to stud that was rated with apple-I managed to get 47/50 stud this time so I hope for good results.
There is one last thing you need to know :3 they say that abilites are somewhat inheritable-underline this somewhat cause this means that there is no guarnatee that you'll get excellent pup from 2 excellent parents X3 you have better chances,but that's about it.
