Reseachers from the Yellowstone Wolf Project trapped and collared a young dispersal male, identified by his tracking number, 1289M. Shortly after being collared, 1289M was spotted with a female. The female currently has no collar, but has been identified through camera traps as 1294F. The group has been named the
1289M/1294F group. The group has been nicknamed "
Sheepeater Cliff" for its proximity to the unique landmark with the same name. Through radiometry of 1289M's movements, researchers estimate the group's territory size to be around 250 km². As Sheepeater Cliff is located in the northern area of the park, competition is fierce with established packs, so a consistent territory has yet to be established. Neighboring packs such as 8 Mile and Lupine border the 1289M/1294F group.
