Explanation: Non-inheritable color aberration somatic mutation and chimera The somatic mutation. An usually yellow animal has black hair, spots or streaks. These black hairs can be anywhere on the animal, they are not inherited, but arise from a so-called somatic mutation, a change in the genome of body cells. In the prenatal stage of development, there was a gene accident, the gene for yellow is wrong reproduced and it creates the gene for black. Any additional cell that results from cell division from this faulty cell will now be black. A very rare form of mosaicism is the chimera. A chimera is a single animal that is the combination of two separate embryos. It occurs naturally when two fertilised eggs combine very early in development. Effectively, the resulting animal is two individuals in one, it also has 2 Sets of DNA. Sometimes it can be impossible to tell a chimera without genetic testing, but in some cases the resulting animal will be a combination of two different colors.
