If it helps at all, the way I like to remember the two signs is by turning them into arrows in my head, drawing the line into the sign instead of away from it. The less than sign will point to the left, and the greater than sign will point to the right. Then I think of it like a number scale, lower numbers towards the left and higher numbers towards the right
