they don't need to be toy motivated to be redirected, it mostly comes down to your individual approach when they're at that nippy age.

sometimes that isn't possible, both of my puppies were always not toy motivated, so that was the only way, as i couldn't find any way to redirect during play

as a dog trainer, i personally wouldn't recommend any spray bottles or smacks.
redirecting is the way to go, especially once they start losing their puppy teeth and they become more nippy.

for one puppy, I'd spray water in their face and theyd stop, the other i had to give him a little smack on the nose to stop.

redirect with a toy and ignore pup if any biting continues. some react well to "ouch" once they're older, but that doesn't really work on younger pups. redirect and ignore.
