With geodes you're far more likely to get dyes in my experience, but it costs an apple per try

Amethyst Dye, 2 Peridot Eye Dyes, 2 Butcher's Broom, and a Red Fern is my haul as far as the better drops. But you can also get the simplest things sometimes, like a mere worm (pup toy)
