Biography Wanderlust had a lot to live up to. His own mother was alpha female of their pack, and the young male never really felt like he could amount to all that.
Rain Cloud, who was named for the thunderstorm that raged during her birth, was his mother. She wasn't only that, though. She was a wolf born in the middle of a great battle, a wolf who had lost her own mother at too young of an age, a wolf who had been renowned for her skills in fighting and now she was alpha.
That changed things for Wanderlust. It was one thing for your mother to scold you for disappearing past the tree lines and making her worry for you when you didn't return for three days. It was another to have the alpha of your pack give you direct orders.
"No more of this foolishness, Wanderlust." Rain Cloud would say, a frown on her face. "You have duties here."
Apparently, he was needed.
That didn't suit him, though. He didn't want to be confined to his pack's growing territory. He wanted to see more. He wanted to see it all.
As the years passed and Wanderlust grew, Rain Cloud began to dismiss his constant disappearances. She gave up on trying to raise him as the sort of wolf capable of taking over her own responsibilities. Now days, it would take him to be gone an entire week before she considered he might be in danger. She had become so desensitized to his need for adventure.
Well, it was her own fault, Wanderlust thought. Wasn't she the wolf who named him? She ought to have expected as much.
He had named a wolf himself, once. Had he cursed her with the name he had chosen for her? It was who she was, wasn't it? The lady of sorrows.
She still looked at him, even now, as if he had saved her. She looked at him like she owed him something. To him, all he had done was offer her a chance to save herself. She may have thought she wished to die, but that wasn't the case. Her will was stronger than she gave herself credit for. Most wolves wouldn't have lasted as long as she did in such a condition.
No, what that wolf had wanted was to be seen, to have somebody tell her that it wasn't her fault.
Well, he didn't really know what had happened to her. Even now that she had found her voice again, she didn't really speak of things that had happened before he met her. He never pushed her. She would speak of it when she was ready, if it was that she ever needed to.
Wolves like her were lost in a way he would never understand. He was grounded. He had not had the hard lives other wolves in his pack had experienced. He couldn't rise to greatness in the same way his mother had, given the way her life had started out.
When he got lost, though his fur knotted with brambles, his nostrils filled with strange and unfamiliar scents, his heart pumping with adrenaline.
"I've been lost before," he said to her, way back when she was a sickly wolf hiding away in a tree hollow. Countless times. I've never had so much fun.
