Embers and ash rained down from the blackened skies, falling to the sea of fire below. Flames of amber and crimson unrelentlessly consumed everything in its path; Like a beast from hell, sent to reek havoc upon the world. The smoke filled air was suffocatingly hot, choking the life out of the forest and her creatures. And so they ran. Ran from the forest they called home. The forest that safeguarded them from the outside world. the forest that was now being reduced to cinders.
A soft pelt of once black and silver, now wore heavy and grey. The ash grasping, clinging, weighing down the fleeing wolf, as if trying to drag him back to ruthless flames. But he pressed on. The thought of death pushing him to run faster than the consuming flames. Hot air burned in the back of his throat as it traveled down into his lungs. Making it feel like he wasn’t breathing at all. He took short, quick breaths as he ran, the sound coming out as raspy and labored. The cries of others as they burned, and the scent of burning flesh, assaulted his senses. Chainlink Blood ducked and weaved over fallen logs and burning bushes. His mind began to cloud, the flight aspect of fight or flight taking hold.
Off to his left a strange sound sound his attention, causing him to nearly stop. His aqua eyes widened when he saw it. A she-wolf was pinned under a burning log, and she was crying out for help. When she saw Chainlink Blood, she stopped thrashing and looked at him, a mixture of fear and hope on her face.
"Help, please help me!" She cried out, the flames quickly eating at the wood that covered her. Even in the midst of running for his life, his personality over took the fear and a cynical grin spread across his face. He laughed quietly and tilted his head, while staring at the other wolf.
"In this world, sweetheart, only the strong survive, and who am I to interfere." He spoke. The look on the she-wolf's made his heart flutter, and without another word he began running again, her screams growing fainter and fainter the farther he got.
Chainlink Blood wasn't known for his kind nature. Some even questioned if he had any at all. No, Chainlink Blood was cunning, malicious. He was venomous and anyone who knew him knew that. Evil incarnate, is what they called him. And his actions prove that.
At the bottom of the valley there was a large lake that separated the forest into two. If he could get there and cross the lake then the fire wouldn’t be able to reach him anymore. He would be safe. Chainlink Blood was about a mile from the lake, and if at all possible the fire seemed to spread even quicker. Before he was a good distance away from the flames, but now they were nipping at his tail. His paws thudded against the ashen earth as he pushed on. Out of the corner of his eye he saw it, through a break in the trees, the reflection of the fire danced across the top of the water. His teeth bared in a grin and he took a sharp turn towards the water.
Breaking through the tree line, Chainlink Blood didn't stop until his body crashed into the cold water. The ash that clung to his fur dissipated into the water as he swam. His claws raked at the water as he propelled himself forwards. The lake was longer than it was wide, so it didn't take too long for Chainlink blood to swim to the other side. He dragged his body onto the sandy shore, panting. His muscles quaked from running so long, and his throat was burned from hot ash, making it hard to catch his breath.
After a few minutes he pulled together the strength to push himself to a seated position. He turned, watching the fire consume the forest. The reflection of the water danced in his eyes, creating the illusion of flames.
"Well," He started, tilting his head, "That didn't go as planned." He said watching his creation spread and grow. ~Lapin
