The tears had finally stopped but hiccups could still be heard breaking free of her lips. Her once-pale cheeks were red and tear-stained, little specks -freckles- spotted them.
With a red, runny nose, she wiped it free of snot with the end of her sweater sleeve. The pain was mostly gone, leaving only a throbbing headache to replace the unbearable feeling that had filled her head only moments earlier. It had felt as if a bullet had torn through her skull.
The man had just appeared from thin air, materializing before her very eyes with a bloodied hole in his head. His mouth open with a silent scream.
But what terrified her most was that she was the only one around on that busy city street to see the man and his glazed over eyes. Dead man's eyes. She had screamed and begged for help, only to be shrugged off and stared at as if she was insane, and maybe she was. A little girl of only eight, screaming about a dead man appearing before her with a bullet in his head.
Her mother had been the only one concerned that fateful day, the day her first "episode" -one of much more- started. Thoughts swirling in her mind, most of which from her past episodes, she let out a bitter, shaky laugh that left her feeling slightly breathless.
Gulping in air, she pulled the duvet away from her body and reached for the medication bottle on the nightstand and the glass of water beside it. Even though she knew what the results would be, she downed two of the pills and tugged the duvet over her body and up to her chin.
Medication never worked, but it brought comfort that at least something was trying to help her.
