Lily gave a small huff at his comment and may have dug a little harder into his muscles in retort to it. But she eased off, trying her best to work through the tightness without causing him immense pain. It certainly sounded painful. Her head tilted to one side as she continued, she hadn’t considered the new weight of the wings outside of Veles’s constructed realm would cause such a strain, but it made sense. Now she felt terrible that she had allowed Finn to carry her all this way.

“I’m sorry-” She began as Alma came over to offer the newly made ointment, however as soon as Lily saw her face she knew that she was about to be scolded too for not making a fuss of herself. That thought was only confirmed as Alma pressed a hand softly to her tacky forehead, her shoulders slumped in defeat. Her hands simply resting on Finn’s back before she was drawn up to her feet and led away. She knew what Alma would say if she tried to protest, in fact she had seen it first hand with Finn. Instead, she complied and shuffled along the hallway with her.

As she paused in the doorway, Lily felt her heart skip a beat at the gentle touch of Alma’s hand moving her hair from her face. Then the door way closed and Lily felt a small prickling in her eyes that she fought back even if her lip trembled.

Callisto jolted upright at her directed question, quickling making himself head to the living room and perching on the edge of one of the couches as Finn grumbled in discomfort. A shameful glaze came over him and he looked down at his feet with his elbows resting on his knees, hands clasped together.

“Many years ago, before all of this technology.” He flicked a hand up towards the lights and then to the kitchen. “1877.” His voice was muffled as he divulged his actual age, the antiquated time he was actually descended from. It was so long ago compared to the others and he felt rather lonesome in that sense.

“He came to me first, I was lost in life with nothing to show for my name. That’s who he targets. At first he simply wanted worship, a new deity on the up and up. He wanted me to start a religion in his name. So, I agreed. He offered me so much in return, but it was foolish of me to take it.” Callisto finally looked up and across to the pair, his eyebrows knitting together.

“I began to devote himself to Veles and drew people in but he was in my head, I could hear him all hours of the day and night. Eventually he wanted..sacrifices.” He swallowed and shook his head, looking back to the ground. “I tried to find criminals, spent hundreds on bounty hunters. There are only so many bad people in the world and I ran out.” He sighed, pushing his head into his hands and gripping tightly. “I sent myself there, I was alive when I went to his realm. He found me and I tried to convince him otherwise, that worship was enough but clearly he did not take kindly to that and..that was the end of me.”

Finn raised an eyebrow. "Good gravy you're ancient--" he didn't get much more out before Alma clipped the back of his head with her knuckles in a rather graceful sweep. She, on the other hand, was much more thoughtful and respectful in her silence.

"I see," her words were far more gentle and polite than Finn's might have been. Alma seemed to be far more receptive to his story and his woes. She could sense a remorse, a genuine guilt, that was almost visible behind the words and the tale he was revealing.

"That is how it always starts. The vague tales of fame, fortune and wealth. The dangling of the string just out of your reach," she mused gently, moving to the other side of Finn. "They want one thing, then a little bit more, they wanted a little bit more. Just a bit more and then you are so far in that it seems... impossible to stop it and go back," she shook her head lightly. "I can not fault you for your actions. You were young, you were new to the whole idea and, in turn, Veles was not. He knew exactly what he was doing and he didn't tell you the truth at all. That is not something you could control, Callisto. Look at you, you are barely a man yourself. You are young, you are lost, you trusted someone who looked and seemed like they knew how to get a good and honest lifestyle."

She shook her head and pulled her dark brown hair back. "That is no fault of yours, boy. It is the same with the rest of us. We have had ample time to say no, to go back, to escape. But we are too far in, we believe there is no escape for us."

She tutted softly. "But there is. And now, you have the plan to stop it once and for all and I commend you for that. That is a valiant act and a show of remorse."

She set the empty tin aside and pulled the glass jar over. "Aye, Chico, did you ever stop to rest?"

"... no..."

Alma shook her head lightly. "Just like your father," she chided lightly. "Heaven forbid you rest! Even for a mere second! Do not be like them," she turned her last few words to Callisto. "You rest and you take care of yourself."

Callisto frowned and looked down at Finn sharply, he would have said something equally rude back if he hadn’t felt so guilty about putting the man into Veles’s claws to begin with. His gaze slowly turned its attention towards Alma, oddly surprised by the calmness in her tone. At least she seemed a little more understanding of his mistakes than Lily and Finn were. Not that he could really blame them, they should have died it was a miracle they had made it out.

He didn’t comment on the fact it was mostly Xevon he cared about, he didn’t need to dive into that mess. But removing Veles from their lives would be a blessing.

“There is little time for the living to rest in that place, ma’am.” Callisto offered, straightening himself up a little more now that he didn’t feel so scrutinised. “Their memories leak back into their unconscious heads when they sleep, it is not a very restful place.” His words came out in a sigh, he could hear Lily in the other room, well he could hear the lack of Lily. Likely meaning she was passed out on Alma’s bed and he couldn’t blame her, sleep felt incredible.

His eyes rounded as he saw Alma direct herself to him, he needed to rest? He supposed so. After so many years of being unable to even sleep, perhaps he should simply sleep the day away. Isn’t that what cats do? Though now he had some rest, he couldn’t shake the feeling of urgency that they needed to get Xevon out of that place. Each minute that ticked by, he could be suffering and it was ripping his heart apart.

"Well, last I checked, we aren't in there now," Alma responded gently and not unkindly to the man. She had a feeling that it was likely a battle no matter what they did or where they went. There was always something to disrupt their peace, their rest and relaxation. That was a straight away and a given. Always and forever.

"The land of the living requires you to live, at the very least survive. You are here, you are in the living. We are not in the land of limbo or whatever realm that monster resides in," Alma added lightly. "It will do you all good to rest up and take time to recuperate even just a bit. The better you are now and the more you heal will give you a bigger upper hand against Veles."

Finn shook his head lightly and sighed wearily. "But I don't want to rest," he murmured quietly. "I want to go and rescue him. He... Alma, you don't understand. He looked awful, he died--he wasn't even part of the cult! Ever! He was a tourist that Veles drew in through the hotel."

"I understand, Chico," Alma was just as firm as she was gentle. "But you will not win this fight if you are ragged, injured and half-dead. You will rest at least another day and then we will go. Do you understand?"

Callisto’s eyes twitched as Finn began to dive further into Xevon’s history, exactly how he had ended up in the hotel. It was becoming a little much for the man, he curled his fingers into the fabric of his dress pants and gripped tightly. The knuckles turning white with the effort of not letting his own emotions get the better of him once again. He had already done that once before. In fact, he would greatly enjoy if Finn did go back to sleep right now.

“Alma is right, we need to rest. We stand no chance of helping Xevon if we are all exhausted and haunted.” Callisto did his best to keep his voice level, maintaining indifference. “Lily is already asleep, I can hear her. Which is surprising because I am sure all she could hear was your whimpering about your muscles.” He flicked a hand towards Finntello and paused, his usual bluntness had returned and he didn’t think about how Alma may react. Carefully, he drew his eyes over to the woman in apprehension.

Lily was in fact asleep, but it was far from peaceful. She was sprawled out on the bed, still in her clothes and flipping from side to side restlessly. Despite being freed from the lurking dangers of the hotel, it didn't do anything to subdue the anxiety that had been sown within her head. The fear that the shuffling at the door could be Veles, preparing to thrust through the door and rip Finn away and into his claws. Impaled on this mixture of bone and flesh, screaming in agony.

Alma raised an eyebrow before shaking her head. All of these children. All of them. Her hands set on her hips, giving him a rather pointed look with a raised eyebrow. While she didn't say anything yet, it was clear there was something on the edge of her tongue.

Finn shook his head, trying to get him to stop talking with a minute wave of his hand.

"If this is going to work," her voice was far more steeled and chiding this time, "you are going to need to let go of your pasts--all of you. You will need to work as a team, not against each other. This is no race, it is not a competition. It is a war," the woman's voice grew far more edged than before. "We can only go so far alone. We will go much farther as a team. I expect that you will work as a team, do you hear me?"

Finn bobbed his head, slowly sitting upright to kneel on the floor. "Yes... yes, Madre."

"Go lay down," she gestured to the hallway where his room had been. "You too, Callisto. I want no one awake in this house except for me."

The woman collected the glass jar, stood up and sat down at the table, pulling out some yarn, a few crochet needles and began to work on something she had started ages ago. There, in the way she worked, was a touch of frustration. She did not say a word, didn't make it known but did in fact show that she was frustrated.

Finn simply winced and shuffled back to the room, drawing the curtains and sitting down on the bed. A small part of him was... worried. What if there was nothing left of Xevon to rescue? What would they do then?

Callisto saw the look and brought his hand back to his lap immediately and shut his mouth up. He did not want to test the waters here, there were no boundaries to be pushed. A flicker of something across his face was all her teamwork comment. She was right, but sometimes he couldn’t hold his tongue. People were difficult.

His eyes moved to Finntello as he began to make his way down the hallway, he remained sitting for a moment longer before he shuffled a little further up the couch and leaned back. He didn’t really want to turn back into a fluff ball. Instead he leaned his head over the back of the couch and tried to let sleep come to him that way, it did come eventually. Even if it wasn’t exactly the most comfortable position in the world, Callisto was out cold once again. He had many years of sleep to catch up on and his body was very prepared to just give into it.

Lily had settled somewhat as the time went by, the fitful twitching of her muscles had relaxed as she fell into a deeper sleep. However that didn’t mean the images had stopped playing in her head. Unlike the memories that jolted her awake after they were over, the nightmare simply never ended. Aimlessly seeking the halls of the hotel, not a person in sight. She was frantically searching for someone, any of the men she knew had to be here somewhere. Skidding around a corner, she came face to face with her mind’s image of Veles. A heaving mass of pure terror, lurching towards her with a hungry maw of sharp teeth. Guttural clicking before a snarl and then those teeth snapped down, but not on her. Finn’s form had appeared between them and the sharp teeth sliced through him instead, Lily lunged forwards, hands flailing to try and grasp at him but it was useless. What was she supposed to do against a god? Then a sickening crunch and Finn felt limp in the jaws, his wings slumping to the ground and she cried out.

A sharp gasp drew her awake, a cold sweat running over her and a small yelp of a sob. Her chest heaved with effort as her wide eyes scanned the room, as though Veles was about to burst out. Then it registered that she was in the trailer. That comfort did not stop the pounding in her chest. It seemed that she wasn’t coping with this as well as she thought she had been.

The sun through the curtains was brighter, the day had been progressing around her as she had laid there and squirmed around. Her eyes peered at the window before she drew her knees up to her chest and hugged them close, sitting in the middle of the bed in sorrowful silence as she attempted to restrict her the sounds her throat was letting out.

Lily was not the only one entrapped within their own mind. Finn's dreams were just as restless. The hallways opening up and endless, his dagger in hand as he tested the weight constantly. He could hear the shuffling, the constant noise that pounded through the hallways. A burning feeling that rose up in his throat and stomach as his gaze swiveled back and forth. He'd catch sight of a shadow, nothing more, and then as he whirled around to strike it... there was nothing. He could hear it. Always out of reach but always nearby, that shuffling accompanied by cackling laughter. His hands curling around the dagger to tear it from the wall and start over again. The hunt for the beast that roamed the hallways.

By the time he found it, however, the broken form of Xevon stared back at him. Tattered, black wings that raised up over his head, limbless shoulders squared and taut. The hollow face--one side crushed beyond recognition and the other blood red eye that stared back at him. The disapproval was palpable from the ghost even if he said absolutely nothing.

"I can't kill you," Finn cried out. "I want to help you!"

The ghost said nothing, still looking down at him. Finn shook his head, desperate to reach him. His hand reached out to touch the ghost and the face of the beast leapt through him, the misty apparition vanishing as the face of the god tore into his vision.

He startled awake--only partially before he had passed out again. Sleep was less painful than being awake.

But the second dream was far more fleeting. Visions of a woman... a woman...? It wasn't Alma. No, her vibrant amethyst eyes were soft but pained. A gentle breeze lifted the scent of lavender through the air and a gentle hand stretched out to brush along his cheek before she was gone as soon as he had seen her. Or felt her. There were only a few pieces that he had before he finally groaned and woke up when his shoulders twinged. "Ugh, I'm going to cut these off, I swear..." he put one hand over his face before sitting up and making his way into the hallway with a reluctant noise.

Alma had at least started some semblance of lunch using leftover meat from the night before.

Lily’s head only lifted as she heard movement in the hallway beyond the door, peeking over her knees at the doorway. She stared at it as she listened to the sound of footsteps, followed by the brush of feathers on the walls, knowing Finn was making his way back to the main room. She found herself not wanting to move.

Her eyes were bloodshot and watery, Lily did not want to venture out into the main room with the others looking like a mess. The boys already bickered, if she looked like she wasn’t on top of herself, then she couldn’t make them work together. Her arms tightened their hold on her legs and she rested her chin on her knees, eyes moving to stare at the covered window and the dancing shadows on the fabric. Occasionally, she would let a small sniffle happen before she forced herself back into control.

Callisto on the other hand, the moment the aroma of food had drifted in his direction, the man had shot bolt upright and stared into the kitchen. Clambering his way up from the couch, he pottered into the kitchen and drew up a chair at the table. Waiting patiently for Alma to turn around with another lovely dish, he could get used to this. Even if the couch wasn’t exactly the most comfortable place to sleep. Then he scrunched his nose up, he sounded just like a stray cat.

Callisto straightened his spine and looked over his shoulder as he heard Finn in the hallway, once he had emerged he offered a small nod of his head in greeting. He leaned to look past him, anticipating Lily to be walking quietly behind him but she wasn’t there. He tilted his head to the side and strained to listen but over the sound of the cooking, he couldn’t hear her.

As Finn spotted Callisto looking toward the back bedroom, he shook his head.

"Just let her sleep, man," Finn waved one hand and turned a chair around to sink against the back of it with a faint grunt. "If I had the option, I'd probably be asleep too. Then again, I'd be missing the cooking and I don't think I could live with myself if I willingly missed one of Alma's meals."

Alma simply let out a loose chuckle and shook her head lightly. "It is just because I use simple spices. It's not that hard to make something taste good."

"It's also not that hard to completely screw it up and I have done that more times than I can count," Finn replied cheekily with a faint noise, almost a loose laugh. "Do you want me to bring Lily a bowl...?"

Alma shook her head in response. "No, I will check on her and see how she is doing. You just settle down and eat for a bit and then rest up a bit more."

The young man managed a thumbs-up in return as Alma spooned rice and meat into a bowl, grabbed a fork and made her way to the master bedroom, knocking lightly on the door. "Lily? Mija?" Alma slowly stuck her head inside before shaking her head. "Aye, here," she said softly, bringing her the bowl. "Sleep was not kind to you, was it?"

She brushed her hair back before reaching over to grab her own boar bristle brush and pulled it lightly through her hair, braiding the strands back to keep them out of her face. "There we go, that will be a bit better. Are you feeling better, physically? I know emotions run deep and I can only imagine what you have seen," she whispered softly, " but if I can help at all, let me know."
