I'm hoping this post is more informational, than probelmatic, or dramatized. I think the irony of me revisiting this game, and finding there to be a voudo event is pretty fun. With how small this game is, I doubt I'd find anyone else who's haitian, as am I however something about it does rub me the wrong way.
Of course with the event ending soon, it's far too late for anything to be done now, so I just wanted to take it as a time express my opinion, and educate others. Personally I feel as if this shouldn't have been a theme for an event.
Voudo is a closed practice, commonly seen preformed amongst haitians, those from lousiana, new orleans, ect ect. One of the first things you notice me saying is vodou, instead of voodoo. This is beacause the term is considered highley offensive, and the prefered spelling is vodou.
The practice is aready demonized, and misunderstood as it's usually boiled down to something "scary" ontop of the fact people don't do further research to understand why they use the objects they do. For example: Vodou dolls aren't even that commonly used within the practice, and when they are it's not some manipulation tool you stick pins, and needles with!
Another thing that confuses me is the amount of tribal accessories in the event shop, when things such as "ritual face paint" and "nose bones" aren't something seen in vodou practices. Theres even a pelt listed as "black magic" which I find directly alarming when black magic is a negative term used to describe vodou.
On another highly concerning note, (I will not say who, or where I found it, as I'm sure they didn't know!) I saw a member contemplating using real lwa symbols on a design, as being influenced by this event which is a HUGE no no.
Anyways, thoes were just my thoughts on the event. I hope this isn't against any rules. I just wish the event took a different approach, or wasn't done at all! |

This is a pretty interesting read. I never knew much about the context behind the origin of Vodou and why it was so negatively connotated. I assume it probably has some history with colonization -- especially since a quick Google search shows that the religion's origins were in West Africa as early as the 1600s -- as many perverted things tend to be. . Some further speculation on my part is whether or not Vodou being associated with black magic, demons, and similar was intentional by Western culture to degrade the African peoples & thus justify the need to colonize and conform them. . In modern culture, it has been popularized by TV series and movies, often directed by those whose motivations are to generate revenue and lean into tropes, rather than being accurate with the content they use. . But beyond my random ramble, after seeing your post, maybe Eve could rename to charms, talismans, idols, or similar. It seems like it's an easy fix to make everyone happy |

Oh it wasn't a big issue for me. I think it's great that this game even considers adding an event of this contect, and them. Even seeing the "haitian mountains" background was enough to make me happy, as you normally don't see rep for very specific ethnicities. I just like to ensure people know what they're getting involved with, when interacting with a topic that may be more sensitive to others. There were only a few nit picks here, and there, and theres actually a few alarming things outside of this event that could be adressed, but at the end of the day it's nothing for me to fuss about. I just love taking the oppurtunity to share about this practice since I am very passionate about it's history! |

I'm definitely with you on this, it is very important to be culturally aware when basing in-game events on real practices, religions and cultures. Doing research about these things can be challenging, sometimes, but that's just part of the package. If you're truly dedicated to your craft you can find a way to make such an event and also consider if it might harm or affect people who are of that culture and/or practice such things c: Thank you for informing people about this! It's always needed :D (and your culture is absolutely beautiful, coming from someone who loves researching about different cultures!) |

I greatly appreciate how open minded everyone is being about this post! There's a lot more I could've mentioned, but I just wanted to get the general idea across. I still enjoy this game, and it's content! |
