Our story begins with an ending, as many stories do.
The Denali Preserve Pack, a gargantuan family of wolves that began the winter with over 50 members, was in the middle of the coldest, most brutal winter in known memory. The elder's of the pack could only remember the tale of one such winter, passed down through generations of wolves as the Death Freeze. The herds had left the area, and any prey that remained had succumbed to the cold already.
They had lost many of the oldest and youngest wolves, leaving only the strongest 20. The alpha pair, Styx and Athena, made the decision to move the pack south to a warmer climate, and leave the home they had inhabited for generations.
As they began their trek, they had to cross many rival wolf packs lands. They quickly realized that even in their reduced numbers, they appeared as a threat to the packs they came in contact with. In the interest of not starting any battles and losing even more of their family for good, they decided to split up into several smaller groups that would be less threatening, and more likely to be allowed to cross rival packs lands. After over a month of hard travel, Styx and Athena found a new home for their pack with plentiful food and water.
They sent out search parties for their missing members, and for the most part everyone rejoined them in their new lands. They chose a new name, since they no longer felt like the same pack that had left the Denali Mountain. The pack flourished, although they mourned their lost members, they soon had new pups and members to care for.
Eventually, Styx and Athena stepped down, after many years and raising countless wolves that joined the family.
The pack continues on, growing ever stronger, ever larger.
We are the masters of the night: the wolf pack that appears as an apparition and disappears like smoke. We are the Nightwalkers.
