I currently have an over abundance of food from BE training- help yourself to some for free in my MD :) R R A thin, grey-coated wolf stepped nimbly, following the scent of another wolf. He had been tracking her for a while, and before that the two had spent many nights howling back and forth. She had been moving closer and closer to him. When he awake one morning, he smelled wolf- and her nearby howl confirmed her arrival. R He continued south. Distantly, he smelled a river- frozen over, now, but still the intricate smell of water, cattails, and river creatures like beavers and muskrat. For now, the ground remained littered with bushes and rocks, but was mainly grassy, where the patchy, slushy snow didn't cover the earth. He could see the foggy shapes of trees ahead, where the river must lie. But between here and there was another form- the wolf he had been calling to. His tail and ears perked up- not so much to look threatening, but enough to show his excitement. R Together, the two wolves looked south towards the river. The female dipped into a play-bow, then romped off, inviting him to follow. He hesitated. Here, now, he had noticed a familiar scent: this wolf was from a neighbor of his own family's pack. That pack was a rival of his parents. She was not of this southern land he had traveled to: both of them were unfamiliar with the ground they now stood on. It was the furthest south either had ever been. But these two wolves were young, looking for a mate and a territory of their own. They cared little for the fancies of their parents, and the area housed no other packs. He accepted her invitation and gave chase. R The two wolves yipped like puppies at play, roaming closer to the river. The cared not for the deer trails they crossed. They ignored scents of moose. They were unbothered by the twitter of chickadees on the wind. They did not know the invisible border they had crossed miles back, set up by creatures they did not understand. R Tired, eventually, they stopped to rest, panting and lying nose to nose. Between them, peeking up from the layer of snow, was one withered plant- pale and brown from winter's harsh cold. But in the spring, the plant would have offered a beautiful, pink flower, set right between the lovers, the alphas-to-be of a new pack. A prairie rose.
