They have no pack name. They do not need one. They barely leave the forest, and when they do, it is night, under the cover of the fog, and nearly silently. They have no allies, though nor do they have foes, and when war breaks out, they are nothing more than silent sentries on the treeline, aiding no side but their own.
Stories travel much farther than paws, though.
An elder tells a pup on a dark night; they are larger than almost any other wolf, their tongues forked, their eyes eerie and predatory. They are shapeshifters, she says, bodies complicated and lithe. They are slow to fight, but she claims she saw it once, when she was a pup. She claims that the male was more wraith than wolf, that he swirled like smoke and smiled even as his blood painted the ground. He was downed, she said, only when a whole troupe of warriors descended upon him, and even then, she swore he fought until his very heart stopped beating. She calls him, and his pack, creatures of evil, of darkness.
On this night, the pups believe it. The warriors of her pack roll their eyes and grin. There is no such thing as fork-tongued wolves, wolves that cannot be managed but by an entire hunting party. If there were, no pack could exist in peace.
On this night, a she-wolf with paws the size of boulders pads with silent grace through an open field, bearing in her jaws a slain fox. None detect her. She hears the sound of the elder's voice and thinks it lovely, though she cannot make out the words. If she could, they likely would send her into a fit of laughter.
A snake waits in the shadows, a concept this large she-wolf is intimately familiar with. She has been brought up with it since puphood. She deals in blood and secrets. She is not evil, though nor is she harmless. If she desired it, she could demolish this fragile peace.
And yet, she still heads eastward. She ignores this pack of small, weak wolves in favor of her fellow snakes.
A snake itself could never be evil, it is only a snake.
It is something many would do well to learn.
