Phonk is a hip hop and trap subgenre that originated in Memphis, Tennessee and draws inspiration from 1990s Memphis rap. It's characterized by a dark, hypnotic sound created through a production style called "chopped and screwed". This involves slowing down and manipulating samples from 90s hip hop, funk, soul, and R&B, and adding effects like distortion and reverb. Phonk also features heavy, distorted bass, pitched-down vocals, and eerie atmospheres.
