It makes it so if you die, it's not as huge a biggie unless you forgot to set your respawn point and are teleported back thousands of blocks to your base. Heh.

Alternatively, you can create a world, enable cheats, and then type /gamerule keepInventory true to turn on keep inventory. I don't play with it off because of too many rage inducing moments
