The air was laced with ice and frost that bit into his bones, his stomach rumbled and groaned, his limbs ached from days of foraging and ranging within the woods of their land - and yet, he was pleased.
For the puffs of cloudy breath from small pups' noses cut through the chilly air, and the satisfied yawns and sighs of his beloved vilkai - a motley crew of outsiders and rogues heaped together - eased his cares. They were safe, they were content, and they were loved. For these wolves, that was enough. For these wolves, that was far more comforting and life-giving than a warm den and a full belly. And so Briedis' heart was full, and he slept easy, content to love and be loved.
