Biography "You know Unakite; you remind me so much of your father when he was your age." Shade's attempts to draw the pup's attention from their bickering had worked,, and both pups turned to look at her with big round eyes.
"Really?" They both asked in unison.
Shade nodded. "Oh yes," she thought back to the days when she was raising Hellfire in the nursery along with Jacob. Jacob and his pups shared many similarities, dark pelts, small, stocky builds, and Shade smiled to herself, their taste for trouble and adventure.
"You know," Shade turned her attention back to the two pups in front of her. "Both of your parents were causing me all sorts of trouble when they were pups. I remember one time that your mother had convinced your father to sneak out of the clearing," Dacite's eyes grew wide and curious,, so Shade added sternly. "Which was very naughty and got the two of them in a lot of trouble." Dacite looked away a little guilty as Unakite rolled her eyes at him. "When we found out,, they were missing Admiral and I looked everywhere-"
"Whose Admiral?" Skarn interrupted.
Shade looked at the pup as the familiar grief settled in her chest. It was a pain that she was very familiar with and was almost numb to. But the sting was still there. She sighed. "Admiral was my old mate and a very close friend and the wolf that saved my life when a bear attacked our patrol."
Unakite was bursting with questions. "Is that how you lost your eye? What happened to Admiral? Was the bear huge? What's it like only being able to see out of one eye?"
"Unakite!" Dacite cried. "Hellfire told us not to ask Shade questions like that! Hellfire said it was rude; you're rude!"
"She brought it up!" Unakite replied and stuck her tongue out at her littermate,, then turned back to Shade and looked down, a shameful expression covering her muzzle. "Is it okay for you to tell us, Shade? Hellfire did tell us not to. I'm sorry."
Shade felt a little blindsided by Unakite's forceful personality,, but after the brief moment of shock wore off, she couldn't help but laugh at the young pup. "Of course, you can ask me questions, Skarn. It's hard talking about Admiral, but it would be even harder to insult his memory by never talking about him again."
Unakite looked at Shade and mumbled sadly. "Is he in the heavens?"
Shade nodded and looked at her. "Yes, little one."
Dacite looked at her. "Do you miss him?"
Shade nodded again and looked at them. "Very much, we grew up together. I don't remember a day without him before the attack, and there isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about him."
"Can you tell us stories about him? About what happened?" Unakite asked more thoughtfully.
"Of course, I would love to," Shade told Dacite and Unakite stories until the two pups had drifted off to sleep beside her; telling these stories was always difficult, but it had felt good to share them with these pups, who had listened so intently. It had almost felt like she was introducing them to Admiral himself.
She hoped Admiral saw her now, with these pups sharing his memory.
