Biography
I just didn’t feel it. That connection to the rest of the pack. The pull towards nature and it’s mysteries. Everyone always said I could be snappy and even I could detect my this sarcasm. I guess it was just my way of hiding how I really felt. Ever since I was a pup, I never got in with the others. They didn’t treat my any differently or look at me strangely, but I knew there was something wrong with me and I felt like everyone could feel it. A few of the others and I were trotting down one of the many forest paths looking for something to kill. It had been a long, hard winter and new pups were desperate for food. What happened next would change the course of my life forever; and I couldn’t see it.

We heard something giant crashing through the underbrush and getting closer by the second. The four of us rounded off and prepared to take down the large moose or deer, eager to get our mouths on fresh meat. The next thing I knew was that there was a flash of brown fur and a loud yelp. I wheeled around with the others to see the biggest bear I had ever witnessed tearing into our pack member. The others threw themselves desperately at the best trying to distract it with no avail. I became angry and darted around the beast and threw myself into its maw. I felt it’s huge teeth sink into my hip and I twisted around clawing at its nose and eyes. I glanced to the side and saw my wounded pack mate being pulled away to safety. The more the bear dug into my flesh the less I felt it. I became more enraged and continued to bite and claw at anything I could reach. It felt like hours later but the bear finally dropped me and tried to run. The two healthy pack members quickly finished it off and returned to check on our hurt friend. I limped up to see how he was, and they gasped when they looked at me. I was told later that most of the skin covering my hip was removed from the muscle, and they could see the bone. The whole way back they praised my courage and endurance and I began to feel at home. Maybe my defect didn’t set me apart like I thought it did. It made me more eager to protect my pack in the way I could, and gave me a strength others would envy.
