Biography Buck
I couldn't sleep. My senses were on high alert, and I jumped at every sound. It was my very first night in the pack. I had arrived yesterday, and they graciously accepted me. I was so nervous being around a group of wolves again, and I think it showed. They tried to hide it, but I think they all called me Buck, because I bucked at any sort of normal conversation. But tomorrow was my first hunt! I had never hunted anything larger than a rabbit, and I overheard the hunters say we were tracking down a moose. My last thought before my eyes shut wearily was wondering what a moose was.
I followed her bushy tail through a hole in the bushes and emerged into a bright and clean forest. The leaves laughed in the wind and the dew shimmered against the sun. I closed me eyes to take in the wonderful scents and ran face first into her. I backed up started as she glanced behind at me, her eyes laughing. I felt flustered and tried to apologize but she shrugged it off and began tracking. Everyone was focused intently on the trees around us, as we followed her deeper into the woods. Within minutes I knew what a moose was. There was a giant creature stuck in a mud pit, thrashing around to be released. The wolves quickly overtook it, but they looked to me to make the final blow. I ran up excited and waited to make sure. At the lead hunters motion I tore out the animals jugular and we pulled it from the mud.
'And that kiddos, is the story of how Uncle Buck became a member of this pack.' I smiled as the pups rolled about in the grassy den play fighting. I sighed and walked into the pack clearing. To my left some young beta males sat sharing hunting tips, and under the elm trees some young females enjoyed a midday snack. I felt uncomfortable around them and many other pack members still, but directly in front of me I felt safe. She sat under the cave overhang, cleaning one of her pups. She had been kind to me since the moment I arrived, and I was glad I had a best friend. Not all change is bad, sometimes is needed in order to find home.
