Biography My gleaming pelt blended in with the rocky canyon walls. All around me the world burned in envious hunger. I clung to the canyon wall, my feet hanging over the huge drop. The air was thick with smoke and ash. Trees crumbled and fell all along the plateau, and I simply hoped none would strike me. The wildfire had been burning away at our home for days. The pack had already relocated further north on the other side of the river. But my concern was greater than theirs. The north had been barren for years; not enough prey lived their, not enough to support the growing pack. The deer herds down south were thick with individuals that would feed the whole pack. The fires had taken many of the herds, and the remaining numbers were crowded in the canyon floor dying from smoke and falling trees. I rounded the sharp corner and took in the view. Hundreds of deer mulled around the bottom of the canyon, many of them bellowing in fear. The south entrance was blocked by the fire, but the deer were too flighty to cross the raging river to the north. I knew that if I wanted the pack to survive, I would have to get those deer on the other side. I jumped down from rock to rock jutting out of the wall. I finally hit the bottom and ash flew up from where my paws landed. The fire was directly behind me now and the flames threatened to catch my tail on fire. I began pushing and nipping at the deer closest to me. They panicked and disappeared into the crowded area. The more I engaged the more flighty and dramatic they became. Slowly the massive heard began to move towards the river. I kept going for hours. With every yard I got more and more deer dropped dead from exhaustion. I would jump on ledges to look ahead. I saw some deer beginning to swim across while weaker ones were dragged away in the flooded water. Finally the last group hit the water. I stood at the bank chasing any who turned around back into the water. About half made it across the river; this would be enough to repopulate and feed the pack. I sighed in relief and turned to look at the fire one more time. The canyon valley was filled with dead bodies. I noticed some wolves among the deer, along with much smaller animals. The fire raged around the corner of the canyon and grew with the fuel of the dead. My eyes reflected the red and blue flickers if the flames and my body was black from the ash. I turned and dove into the river, leaving behind nothing but one last paw print in the ash.
