Silence. She'd forgotten what that's like.
Not long before now, everything she once had known had gone up in flames. The fire blackened the woodlands, massacring from the heart to the rim. It was a wildfire that brought animals together to fight for their survival. Wolves no longer chased the hares, but ran with them to live. The bears ran into the water, but not to catch the fish. It was all they could do to survive.
Everything deserved the chance, Love thought.
Burned and so close to giving up, Love had tripped and collapsed over an uprooted root and slammed her chin on the ground. The deer lept over her limp body, crying out in fear.
In her blurry haze, she spotted a wounded rabbit. It couldn't have been older than a few weeks, and she wondered if it was even alive anymore. Yet, she caught its gaze once her vision was as restored as much as it could be amongst the blackened fog, and she saw the terror in its eyes.
It needed her, and she needed someone now, too.

Love grabbed the rabbit in her maw, and she splayed her ears hearing its anguished screams. Its back had been burned in the fire, and the skin was raw. She could taste the blood in her maw as she ran. She hoped she was headed somewhere safe; it was so hard to tell with the ashes in the air.

They had jumped together off of a low cliffside and into the lake below. Deer toppled down after them, smacking against the water brutally. Birds cried in the air, their feathers smoking. Luckily, the lone wolf and the rabbit had made it. It would take the fire hours to stretch down into this valley, and Love knew that they would survive. She paddled her way to the shoreline, as did struggling bear and deer around her. She was so exhausted, but had to keep moving. It was only a matter of time before the bears in the valley would begin to hunt, and other wolves would come to prey on the divided deer, now that they were out of the fire's grasp.

She had walked for what felt like an entire day. Her paws were raw, had opened, and had matted shut by dirt. Exhaustion caused her head to hang low and shoulders to arch. The rabbit had grown still finally, as it accepted its fate in her mouth by the fourth or fifth hour of their trek. But, finally, they were out of the imminent danger.

A nook in a rocky hill provided refuge for the large wolf and the infant rabbit. She had tucked her body by the entrance, to both block the rabbit inside and protect it from the outside wind. She splayed her ears as she observed its wounds, and couldn't help but wonder how bad she must have looked now herself. She knew she had been bleeding, and she had felt the cinders on her back. She knew that they would survive, though, and gazed down at her injured friend. She craned her neck to pry tufts of her fur from her shoulders, where her thickest fur she could reach was, and settled the shed down as matting for the rabbit. It would cry in agony when it moved, but it was improving day by day. She had nursed it as her own, and it was growing more comfortable with her presence by this stage. It couldn't stand, but more wiggled with shame to scoot its body across the floor of the cold nook. Love hoped that in time it would be able to walk or maybe even run, by the time the large scabs on its back healed. She would protect the creature, as long as it needed.
