Season: Summer Time:Day Weather:Sunny
The sun gave the last rays of that day, hot and unforgiving, luckily for us, we were in the shade of a tree, while the gentle breeze of the mountain cooled us, avoiding the infernal heat of summer.
We had reached the top of that mountain after an arduous exploration, just me and my grandfather.
He was lying down, and I on top of his back, fiddling with that curious crown, but taking care not to throw it away or mistreat it much.
After a while, he got up, I assumed it was time to return, but he did not move forward, he just looked towards the horizon.
"Little Ilex, have I ever told you why I wear this crown?" For a moment I was speechless. Grandpa almost never spoke, no more than a sentence or two at least. He didn't turn to see me, so I answered a simple "No." He inhaled deeply, as if the talk required a great effort.
"Your grandmother ... She was the one who had the idea." He said, and bowed his head, dropping the crown, and bringing it towards me, encouraging me to look at her.
"'Honor', 'Courage', 'Trustworthy'"... That is what it represents, and only those willing to honour that, are worthy of wearing it." He told me, and for the first time, I was fascinated by that simple object, which now represented much more.
"I'm sorry I didn't tell this to your father."
My father ... We were never very close, although I don't doubt that he loved me. He was supposed to be the next alpha, but he died before it, although I wasn't quite sure how.
"... Little Ilex, I must ask you a favor, so please listen to me." He said, I went a little closer to him.
"Can you promise me, that you will be honourable, brave and trustworthy?"
For a moment there was silence, and I didn't know what to say, but the next, magically, a great feeling of determination was born in me, so I nodded and looked into his eyes. He smiled, clearly pleased, and somehow, he looked calmer. The crown was placed in his head again, and we started our way back.
When there was little left to get home, he spoke again.
"There is something else. About the beautiful crown your mother has." My mother was the current alpha female, even though my father was no longer with us, I never asked myself too many questions about it.
"'Intelligence', 'Wisdom', 'Kindness'" ... Those are the qualities you must look for."
I remained confused, even after that day. Look for? I didn't understand what that meant, what intelligence, wisdom, or kindness looks like?
But oh boy, I found out sooner than I imagined.
