Biography Feint right, roll left. Lunge forward, backpedal away. Claw across, dodge right. Feint, roll, lunge, backpedal. Slam, bite, dodge....pin. Night Reign smacked her opponent against the cold, hard ground, bleeding a crimson hue. There was only a glimmer of doubt before she swiftly ended that wolf's life. There was no time to be soft. This was war. Her battling pack mates snarled and clashed with the enemy. Her forces were rigidly disciplined, trained to perfection, marching in organized battalions. The other pack was.... a mess. No order at all. Night Reign could not even tell who was the alpha. Then again, there wasn't much Night Reign could see, over the heads of the adults. Night Reign, forever called 'Night', was just an old pup, or a young wolf, as many others in her army were. And even though Night had trained for it her whole life, anticipated it, even longed for it - she now hated war. Her ears rang from the screams and snarls of dying wolves, from the thuds of bodies hitting the ground. Her nostrils reeked of metallic blood. This was Night's third battle. And this war was dragging out, even with the other side being so disorganized. It was infuriating, really. Every time Night got a wolf cornered, another would rush in to save him or her. It was stupid, and frustrating. Maybe that was why the battles lasted an eternity. While the soldiers of her pack were left to fend for themselves, the other army were always watching each other's back. But nobody had ever done that for Night. And she didn't care. It had made her resourceful, dependent on nobody. It had made her strong. Again. Roll, duck, slash. Kick, slam, lunge. Pin. Again, and again, and again, Night felled all the wolves who got in her way. But she was starting to falter, to tire. Leap, dodge, backpedal. The movements came naturally, for Night and her army had trained day after day after day. Every moment of her life, if Night was not hunting, sleeping, or eating, she and her fellow soldiers were training. It was the life she had been born into. She had known nothing else. Feint, slash, roll....stumble. Night crashed to the ground, her paws having slipped on a lifeless body, slick with crimson liquid. And then she was on the ground. Night was going to die. As knows any young soldier, to fall.... is to die. And her head smashed against the ground. And all went black. Night didn't know for how long she was unconscious. But it was a great shock to realize that her eyes could open, and she wasn't dead. But it was even more alarming to realize she was being stared at. Cool, yellow eyes peered worriedly into hers, and Night staggered to her feet, only to collapse again in the sea of blood. Her head felt like it was going to explode. Her leg was hanging at a strange angle. Every breath made a gash in her side spout out a fountain of blood, as bitter as tears. "You're awake!" The foreign wolf cried. He had a stone gray coat, speckled with flecks of midnight black. Night realized three things. One, the battle was over. Two, she was alone, with all of the bodies littering the once beautiful field. Three, the wolf staring down at her was not part of her army. Night, as the rest of the soldiers had spent hours memorizing each other, so they didn't accidentally hurt one another. This wolf was from the other pack. So why didn't he kill her already? "Why would I do that?" He asked, and Night realized that she had said her last thought aloud. "Because I'm your enemy. Or would you rather me kill you? Although I'd reckon that'd be kinda hard, considering I'm probably about to spontaneously combust any second now." The other wolf laughed, which was strange. Night hadn't been kidding. The other wolf was about her age, a little older. He didn't have the scars of a soldier, which was strange for any wolf to lack in these times. Suddenly, Night was being hauled to her paws by the other wolf. "By the stars, you're a disaster. Come with me," he said, leaning her weight against him. "Why? Why aren't you letting me just die? I'm half dead already. Easier just to finish the job." Night said, staggering forward, sucking in a sharp gasp at the sudden pain. The other wolf tilted his head. "I'm not going to let an innocent wolf die." He answered. Night was no innocent. She had killed at least fourteen wolves in her last battle, and she was only two years old. Night would rather just die. She was worth nothing anyway. "I'm Ollie, by the way." Night glanced up. "Night Reign." She answered, but said nothing else. The other wolf glanced back at her, and smiled. No one ever smiled at her. Night's heart fluttered, and she dared a small smile back at him. She felt something in the pit of her chest, a flicker of something inexorable and strange. Hope
