Biography Pup paused, swiveling his head to scan his surroundings. Where was he? Where was Mother? How did he get so lost? The last thing he remembered the screaming wind, and the howling snow. He had found shelter underneath a tapestry of tree roots, but why had Mother not followed him? Where was she? Pup slunk further into the roots, tail tucked between his legs. The stormy gray sky blocked out the early morning sun that should have been shining cheerfully, and it shrouded Pup's world in a dismal veil of misery. The frost covered forest was cold and foreboding, but pup knew he would need to find food soon. A wave of despair washed over him. He was lost, Mother was gone, and Pup had no where to go. Trembling, Pup gathered his fragile sense of courage and crawled forward out of the roots into the biting winter air. There was a rustle of leaves somewhere behind him, but Pup's thoughts were occupied by something else. Pup lowered his small nose to the ground, just as Mother taught him, and inhaled deeply. Maybe, just maybe, he could find his family. But what he scented was not his parents or siblings - it was another pack, entirely different than what his family smelled like. A pang of hope sparked in Pup's tiny chest. Maybe the pack would help him find his family! Maybe - Pup's trail of thoughts was cut off by a blur of motion off to his left. Pup whirled, terrified, nearly tripping on his own paws. And, right in front of him, was a fox. Pup's heart galloped wildly in his chest, trying desperately to escape, but his paws stayed rooted to the ground, unmoving. The fox was scrawny mostly flesh, mangled patches of fur, and bones, but he had the hallowed out eyes of a shrewd creature, and Pup found no hint of compassion in them. This fox was going to rip him apart in heartbeat. Pup stared wide eyed, unable to move a muscle. Run! His mind screamed, but he couldn't get the message to his terrified limbs. Pup opened his mouth to say something, but all that he managed to choke out was a strangled whimper. The fox peeled back his lips, revealing a row of needle sharp fangs. Pup didn't even have the chance to howl before the fox tensed his muscles and sprung. It all seemed to happen in slow motion after that. The lethal claws of the fox were outstretched, jaws spread wide... and then a blur of Silver slammed into the mangy creature tossing the fox sideways. Pup watched, not believing his eyes as the silver wolf latched her jaws on the Fox's throat, the who was thrashing about wildly. Another wolf, with a pelt as white as snow flew by pup and buried his fangs into the fox's hide. The fox lashed out, slashing the silver wolf's shoulder, but she didn't let go on her hold of the fox. In the chaos, Pup found himself underneath a chestnut colored she-wolf, standing protectively over him. From underneath the wolf's long legs, Pup saw the white wolf slam the fox into a tree, and the creature collapsed in a crumpled heap, still. The two wolves stayed there for a minute, heads bowed over the unmoving body of the fox, before turning to face Pup. Pup wasn't sure any of this was real. The Silver wolf - she had saved him! So did the white wolf and the red wolf standing above him! Did that mean.... that maybe - maybe they would help him? Pup shivered with newfound hope. The silver wolf walked forward, limping a bit, next to the white wolf. She dipped her graceful head to Pup's level. Pup was shaking, but not from fear or joy. The shock of what just happened was just starting to sink in. The silver wolf's eyes swirled with concern and compassion. It was the white wolf that spoke. "Are you alright, little one? Where is you pack?" he voice was kind and soothing, and Pup immediately felt the impulse to tell him everything. Pup swallowed, and managed to squeak out a reply. "I-I.... I'm alright," he said, "my Mother - I lost her in the white storm - I don't know where -" Pup's voice snagged into a sob. He watched as a tear rolled down his face, staining the snow beneath him. The red wolf above Pup stepped in front of him, meeting his eyes. "Oh Moonshine, don't cry. It's alright. You don't have to tell us now. The important thing is we get you to the den." She smiled kindly, then glanced at the two other wolves for approval. The silver wolf nodded then dipped her head to Pup, who was still trembling. "It's alright. We'll take you home and then you'll start to feel better. Then, maybe we can work on finding your pack." Her voice was smooth and gentle, and Pup was comforted a little. She dipped her head, took his scruff in her jaws, and trotted off with the two other wolves at her flanks. As Pup dangled, he tried to comprehend what had just happened. I felt like his world had been tipped up side down, struck by an earthquake, burst into flames, and casually put back as if nothing had happened. As the s
