The First Kill
One night, on a night like this one, a primal scream could be heard deep in the woods. A young brown wolf bounded past the trees, jumped over streams, and darted by the bushes. All just to get away from him. He couldn’t see him coming. His midnight black pelt was so dark, he could easily blend in with the night. But he didn’t see him coming. He was passing an old oak tree when someone grabbed him by the scruff of his neck. Yanked and now on his back, he was the nose to nose to Misfortune’s face. “Please…,” the young wolf whispered. “Please, no. I didn’t mean to take that deer carcass away, I was…,”. “You should have considered leaving it when you had the chance,” Misfortune snarled, drool dripping down on the brown wolf’s face. “I didn’t know it was yours, honest,” the brown wolf whimpered. “It was abandoned… so I took it away. I was trying to feed my pregnant wife and my two sons. Just please let me go. I can make up for it in a week’s time. Just, please… let me go,”. This was when Misfortune’s empathy appeared for the last time. Maybe I could let him go, that little voice said in his mind. After all, he was only trying to feed his family. But his rampant anger and lust for blood quickly squashed the empathy, and all of his compassion and pity was gone. “I don’t think so,” he said in a quiet voice. The brown wolf’s eyes widened in terror as Misfortune gave him a toothy grin and sank his teeth into his neck. Blood spurted onto the ground as the wolf screamed in pain and fear. Misfortune kept his teeth sunken in until the wolf stopped moving. Ever since that fateful night, rumors have spread throughout the land. Everyone tried to keep their distance and avoided being in his presence. And if anyone dared asked why, the response was this: “Stay away from Misfortune’s Keep,”.
