It's the trauma. There is way more than I put in this story, I just focused on the really bad shit—his mother literally punished him for everything. Everything. If he was not apologizing profusely for accidentally spilling a little water, he was a dead man that night. Dally was literally a vent for his family's frustrations. He can't really help it, that was all he knew for 18 years. If no one was around to punish him for doing something bad, or not being noble, or not following his mother's morals, he had to do it himself.

Quill absolutely will pick up on that. He might be slightly reckless and show-off most of the time... but he does pick up on the little things.
