My German teacher (I was taught German when I was little) always told me to say danke... my friends say dankeschön but I say danke instead

Yeah; dankeschön is formal for sirs and ma'ams and strangers and stuff, danke is for friends and family who don't care XD

Ah, I see. It makes sense, to be honest. Dankeschön does sound more formal to me

German has a whole different structure for talking with elders, teachers and people more important than you and everyone else XD
