I like this.
I agree there should only be one creature to start with.. terrorizing, and hunting these canines for game. However, if the canines manage to kill this creature, another moves in its place? If that makes sense.

And I like the idea that the creature only hunts at night, too. And the dogs themselves have become better suited for living in the dark, maybe. Like better night vision, etc.

As for the monster, I think it would be best if there is a single one(for now? Maybe there is only a single one that they know of. Like in their area, at least. Maybe later, more pop up). I like the idea that it is a mutation from a lab of some sort. Giving it a few mystical elements could be fun.

It could be a situation where the think there's only one, because they only see one at a time so they all think it's just one beast. But it could actually be like 3 or so that are just never out and about together.

that's what i was saying. there could maybe only be like two or three, but maybe because they're so territorial, they travel alone rather than in groups and respect the boundaries of the other creatures

I love where this is going! I kind of see the creature being a dog mutation of some sort. In addition to some of the ideas already mentioned I pictured this creature having more claw-like features vs paws for its front feet. A bit larger of a head with [potentially] no ears visible ears, as well as discoloration around the upper body. Like, maybe its original form was black, and now it has some reddish blotches around the face where more visible mutations occur. [the rest of the body remaining black] Just ideas!

I do like the idea of the creature traveling alone and being territorial. As well as what Imp mentioned about there being multiple, but the group believes there is only one.

Ooo. I like the ideas Ciao. Adding on : as it potentially has no ears this would mean its sense of smell and touch would be enhanced. So it has an excellent nose and has a good sense of feeling of things like vibrations and motions. I would also suggest it having rather poor eyesight to add more to the reason it attacks at the night - like it can see if you're super close to it but otherwise you're just a blur to the creature. And it's coloration makes it harder to see in the night - virtually invisible.
