Honestly people are saying not to watch Mulan because the main actress made comments about supporting the Hong Kong police when they've been caught REPEATEDLY brutalizing civilians for protesting their oppressed liberties. There's also some issues with the fact that the crew behind the cameras is pretty much all white. Disney claimed they were going to try and be more accurate to the original "Ballad of Mulan". They then proceed to hire an all white staff to write and produce the thing. Granted, Mushu didn't exist in the original legend, but a fucking witch? That's bullshit. You might have had the proper cast, which is great, but there's a lot of behind the scenes stuff that's irritating. I don't have anything against white people, seeing as I'm white, but when Disney claimed to want to make an "authentic retelling", they should have hired people who were well-versed in chinese culture and who were, I dunno, actually freaking Chinese?! Not to mention they used the #MeToo movement as their excuse to get rid of Li Shang, who literally NOBODY had a problem with in the first place. Although, the witch is the thing is also goddamn horrible too. "Let's be more authentic", they say, then add a shapeshifting witch which literally DID NOT EXIST in the orginal movie or legend. Sorry, I'm getting a heated over a movie, but there was so much done wrong and I'm irritated. My mother said she would purchase it to watch but honestly? I'd rather rent Cats 2019 than watch the live-action Mulan. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk. Edited at September 6, 2020 01:13 AM by Glaciers Voice

I saw the credit and there were a lot of Chinese names. I haven't done any research into. I just enjoyed the movie at face value. Yeah there were things wrong with it. I don't know much about Chinese culture but it sounded closer than the animated version. In the original ballad it didn't specify who she ends up with it just indicated/implied romance Edited at September 6, 2020 01:33 AM by ~Non Sequitur~

I'm not trying to say you don't have a right to enjoy it. I know I was harsh, my bad on that part. You're perfectly cool if you liked it. This is strictly my opinion and I don't meant to demean yours :D And you are correct, the original ballad did not include a romance. It's fine if they wanted to remove it, but using the #MeToo movement as an exuse? Excuse me, no. If they had gone the accuracy route it wouldn't have bothered me. I'm sure the movie itself wouldn't be bad if it wasn't tied to another story. I do actually quite love Mulan. The original story and the animated movie. But on another note, Cats 2019. I genuinely want to see it. Edited at September 6, 2020 01:50 AM by Glaciers Voice

I think the original ballad hinted at romance because at the end two rabbits were running together. I've heard cats was boring. However, they got a lot of well known actors. Some who I didn't know could sing and dance.

I haven't seen the movie but if they honestly wanted to be accurate and Mulan is still an only child in the movie, the whole thing is automatically wrong. They killed the girls if they were firstborn soo.... And ya, I agree the witch was way offbase. Having a dragon spirit is way more accurate than a witch in sooo many ways. The witch isn't even necessary for anything if you think about it, except they wanted to be cool, and it just made it worse. In fact, that is why I haven't seen it is because movies with witches make me nervous. As for the actors/actresses being Chinese, I feel like that is debatable. Look at Aladdin. Naomi Scott got so much heat for playing Jasmine because she isn't Arabic. A LOT of heat for it. But she really nailed the character because she could portray the culture really well in her character. So I think on that front, it really is just finding those who can play the character best and not so much about their race.

Look how offended you are. I am seeing this repeatedly in WP so I know it happens more widely. They had a lot to balance trying not to set one group off. Apparently they didn't do well at it. As we have seen from their live remakes, disney apparently doesn't realize which characters are crowd favorites. Yeah, the witch doesn't really make sense. I'm not sure if you can call her a witch. She is someone who has very strong chi is how they described it. Edit:offended is probably the wrong word Edited at September 6, 2020 12:49 PM by ~Non Sequitur~

Ya, offended is the wrong word, for me at least. I was just continuing the conversation really. It is neither here nor there to me what they actually do.

I've seen a lot of rage over the new Mulan so I guess I would call that offended?

I mean, I suppose. I'm not really angry at it, just not interested and I see it as a shame when I believe they could have done better. But, again, it's not going to ruin my day.
