The description is really vague. It only says it helps out lost wolves... I've been wanting to buy this for a bit, but only if it has a useful purpose...

If you're exploring and you are unable to find the last squares or where you left a battle you forgot to finish, the map gives you a general idea of where and what you're missing.

What does the Explorer's Map item do?

You can use it once, it'll essentially give you an image of where you are when you use the map, and roughly where the animals you need to fight or the tiles you need to clear are. It won't change as you travel, so you may need multiple maps.
