♠︎ Skinbound

...
In a society where the power shapeshifting is inherited through strict family bloodlines, each lineage is bound to a single ancestral skin that carries instinct and memory. Families are divided into predator and prey lines, a division that has shaped generations of hierarchy and resentment. Predator families control defense and enforcement, while prey families preserve diplomacy, history, and survival - equal in name, unequal in power.
As the skins grow increasingly unstable, predator instincts intensify and prey lineages weaken, threatening the balance that keeps the society intact. Once every decade, all families are forced into uneasy coexistence at the Veilfall Conclave, which begins and ends in a masked ball where skins are forbidden and only humane interaction is allowed. Here, old rivalries, hidden alliance, and long-buried truths surface, including evidence that predator and prey skins were never meant to exist apart

Roleplay Rules

...
1.) Respect all of WP & Eve's rules on crediting + in general
2.) Semi-Literacy is a requirement to join this roleplay. Proper grammar shouldn't be a problem, I understand a misspelled word once every so often but your work should be readable.
3.) Please be able to write at least two decent sized paragraphs per post. There isn't a set word count preference but I would love responses 200+ long.
4.) Put your favorite color in "Other" if you've read this far into the rules!
5.) No OP, Mary/Gary Sues, Weeping Willows, etc. You're characters aren't perfect and should all be different! Have fun with making them!
6.) Your characters appearances and personalities aren't too strict to what other families see them as, but they shouldn't be completely off course from what they're biologically meant to be.
7.) Don't be rude. Be respectful to me and other players. I am your host and have the privilege of accepting/rejecting and butting people out of the roleplay if I see it the best fit for the team. Please respect my decisions.
8.) That said, 3 strikes and your out for your characters form. If I need to ask you to correct your form more than three times, I won't, but you are welcome try again with another character.
9.) While violence and more mature themes may be mentioned in this roleplay, please fade anything too graphic or riske into black.
10.) Reservations last 48 hours and you may PM me about a 12 hour extension before your reservation runs out.
11.) You have have up to 2 characters for now. Hosting more than one character in the same family will get a bit of hesitance of my acceptance. This is subject to change depending on the interest this idea gets.
12.) All characters will be between the ages of 18 and 30 years of age. Plead bide by this!
13.) Have fun! I had a great time writing this idea down and would love to hear suggestions or ideas! Pm me with questions as well!

...
♠︎ (Un)spoken Laws
These are the families either spoken or unspoken laws they follow as an everyday part of their lives. They live by these laws and suffer the consequences if they're broken.
SPOKEN - Formal, Recorded, Enforced
1.) Bloodbound Right - Those born into a skin-bearing family may Bind to that families skin. Attempted binding by an outsider us considered sacrilegious and punishable by exile or death, depending on the family harmed.
2.) No Binding Without Witness - All bindings must be overseen by appointed witnesses from both predator and prey families to prevent abuse or falsification.
3.) The Conclave Truce - No skins may be worn. No weapons may be carried. No acts of violence may be committed. Breaking this truce gives every other family the right to retaliate without consequence.
4.) No Shifting in Council or Treaty - Transformations are prohibited during negotiations, trials, or treaties. Shifting is considered coercion when used in political spaces.
5.) Skin Preservation Mandate - If a wearer dies, the skin must be recovered and returned to their family immediately. Allowing a skin to decay or be destroyed is treated as a crime against the entire society.
UNSPOKEN (Cultural, Enforced Through Consequence)
1.) Predator Blood Commands - Predator families are expected to lead in matters of war, punishment, and protection - even when no law explicitly grants them authority. Disobedience from prey families is remembered.
2.) Prey Must Appease - Prey families are expected to negotiate, soften conflict, and accept compromise. Open defiance is seen as destabilizing - even when justified.
3.) No Bonds Without Purpose - Personal relationships between families - especially predator and prey - are tolerated only if they serve political or economic advantage. Affection without strategy is considered dangerous.
4.) Forbidden Intimacy - Romantic or familial unions between predator and prey families are unofficially forbidden. Such bonds complicate loyalty, threaten inheritance lines, and blur ecological hierarchy. Children produced from such unions are quietly pressured to renounce skins or choose one lineage and sever the other.
5.) Never Wear The Skin for Love - shifting to impress, protect, or threaten on behalf of a personal relationship is considered shameful - even among predators. Power must serve the family, not the heart.
6.) Instinct Is Excuse, But Only Once - A violent act may be forgiven if blamed on skin-instinct - once. Repeat offenses mark a family as dangerous and invite collective restriction.
7.) Balance Is Sacred, But Undefined - Everyone agrees balance must remain. But no one agrees on what balance actually indicates.

♠︎ The Families

PREDATORS
• The Greyholt Line - Wolf
Role - Border warens, military commanders, internal security
Reputation - Loyal, Relentless, Dangerous in Numbers
Skin Influence - The wolf skin heightens territorial instinct and emotional bonding. Wearers struggle with suspicion of outsiders and a urge to "protect" through control. Prolonged usage leads to difficulty distinguishing threat from dissent.
° Family Structure - The Greyholts value hierarchy and obedience. Leadership is earned through service, not birth order, though eldest children are favored. Decisions are made collectively by seniors members, mirroring pack dynamics.
° How They See Others - Greyholts view prey families as dependents in need of structure, not equals. They distrust the Serpent line, believing strategy without loyalty breeds betrayal.
- Closest Ally: Blackmaw (shared enforcement duties)
- Primary Rival: Whitehorn (peace seen as weakness)
- Uneasy Relationship: Goldmere (useful, but never trusted)
• The Blackmaw Line - Bear
Role - Enforcers, judges, executioners
Reputation - Finality, strength, inevitably
Skin Influence - The bear skin amplifies dominance, patience, and overwhelming force. Wearers experience emotional narrowing -once a decision is made, reversal feels impossible.
° Family Structure - Highly patriarchal or matriarchal (varies by era), with power concentrated in a single ruling elder. Children are trained to endure hardship early to "prove weight"
° How They See Others - Blackmaws see themselves as the final word. They respect endurance (Boar) and despise indecision (Deer). To them, fear is a stabilizing force.
- Closest Ally: Greyholt
- Quiet Respect: Bramblefen
- Deep Distrust: Nightcoil (manipulation undermines authority)
• The Nightcoil Line - Serpent
Role - Diplomats, tacticians, intelligence brokers
Reputation - Manipulative, untrustworthy, brilliant
Skin Influence - The serpent skin enhances perception, deception, and strategic thinking. Wearers often feel emotionally detached, viewing people as pieces of a larger design.
° Family Structure - Loosely organized. Members operate independently but exchange information constantly. Loyalty is subtle rather than overt.
° How They See Others - Nightcoils view every family as a system to be influenced. They believe predators are predictable and prey are undervalued assets.
- Frequent Secret Deals: Goldmere (information exchange)
- Strategic Tension: Greyholt (power vs. foresight)
- Mutual Contempt: Whitethorn (emotion vs. calculation)
PREY FAMILIES
• The Whitethorn Line - Deer
Role - Mediators, healers, cultural leaders
Reputation - Gentle, weak, indispensable
Skin Influence - The deer skin heightens empathy, awareness, and emotional openness. Wearers feel others fear acutely, often at the expense of self-preservation.
° Family Structure - Highly communal. Decisions are made through consensus, often slowly. Elders are revered as memory-keepers rather than rulers.
° How They See Others - Whitethorns believe predators confuse dominance with protection. They fear Blackmaw authority and mistrust Serpent intentions.
- Strongest Bond: Bramblefen (shared survival history)
- Most Strained Relationship: Greyholt
- Cautious Neutrality: Nightcoil
• The Goldmere Line - Hare
Role - Couriers, scouts, information runners
Reputation - Clever, evasive, unreliable
Skin Influence - The hare skin sharpens reflexes and survival instinct. Wearers experience constant restlessness and struggle with long-term commitments.
° Family Structure - Large, sprawling families with weak central authority. Members often leave and return, valuing flexibility over permanence.
° How They See Others - Goldmeres see every family as dangerous in different ways. They value freedom over loyalty and rarely choose sides unless forced.
- Frequent Contact: Nightcoil
- Uneasy Dependence: Greyholt (protection in exchange of service)
- Quiet Resentment: Blackmaw (harsh punishments)
• The Bramblefen Line - Boar
Role - Builders, guardians, agricultural protection
Reputation - Stubborn, unrefined, resilient
Skin Influence - The boar skin enhances endurance, rage under pressure, and refusal to retreat. Wearers struggle wit forgiveness once wronged.
° Family Structure - Clan based, with strong emphasis on shared labor. Leadership belongs to those who contribute most visibly to communal survival.
° How They See Others - Bramblefens value effort over instinct. They dislike manipulation and distrust authority imposed without labor.
- Closest Ally: Whitethorn
- Mutual Respect: Blackmaw
- Open Friction: Nightcoil

♠︎ The Skins

Nature of the Skins -
Skins are preserved hides of the first shapeshifters - creatures that once walked the world as living embodiments of instinct. They are not alive; but they are not inert. Each skin retains:
Instinctive Memory (responses to threat, fear, dominance)
• Emotional Residue (rage, panic, loyalty, sacrifice)
• Physical Patterns (how the body moves, hunts, flees)
They do not think or speak, but they do push, shaping perception and reaction.
-
Bonding Effects -
Once bound, the skin never truly leaves its wearer.
• Even unshifted, or out of the skin, wearers experience heightened senses
• Dreams often replay ancestral moments in the skins past
• Strong emotion can trigger partial transformations (eyes, nails, posture)
The long the skin is worn over a lifetime, the more difficult it becomes to distinguish self from inheritance.
-
Decay & Instability -
Skins are degrading.
Signs include:
• Stronger instinctual urges
• Emotional bleed-through between wearers across generations
• Physical resistance to removal
• Increasing difficulty passing the skin safety to a new bearer
This instability is uneven - predator skins grow more aggressive, prey skins more fragile.
.
Unspoken Truth -
Ancient records suggest skins were once worn in pairs or cycles, predator and prey maintaining balance. The separation of bloodlines may be the root of the current collapse.

♠︎ The Gathering
(The Veilfell Conclave)
Purpose -
The Gathering is the only sanctioned time when skins may be:
• Passed to new family members
• Reclaimed by returning members
• Rebound after death or abdication
Without The Gathering, Skins cannot be legally transferred.
-
Why The Gathering Exists -
Binding a Skin is dangerous. Performing it outside of the Conclave risks:
• Memory Collapse
• Skin Rejection
• Permanent loss of Skin
The Conclave provides:
• Neural witnesses from predator and prey families
• Ritual stabilizers
• Collective ancestral presence that dampens instincts urges
-
Who Attends -
• Heirs reaching binding age
• Family members returning from exile, war, or long absence
• Elders relinquishing skins
• Political observers ensuring no laws are broken
For some, this is a homecoming.
For others, a reckoning.
-
Ritual Transfer -
The skin is not worn immediately.
Instead:
1.) The skin is presented publicly, folded and masked
2.) The intended bearer kneels before both factions
3.) Oaths are sworn - to family, not instinct
4.) Binding occurs quickly and quietly after the public show
The skin will accept- or reject.

♠︎ The Masked Ball
Purpose -
The masked ball marks the opening night of the Conclave and serves three functions:
• Political Signaling
• Social Negotiation
• Instinct Suppression
By law, no one may wear their skin during the ball.
-
Masks -
Masks are mandatory and symbolic.
• Designs reflect family lineage, not individual rank
• Predator masks emphasize teeth, eyes, shadow
• Prey masks emphasize horns, softness, light
Masks allow interaction without instict-driven dominance or fear- at least temporarily.
-
Behavioural Rules -
• No open accusations
• No threats, veiled or otherwise
• No mention of binding outcomes
• No discussion of skin instability
Everything is said sideways.

• Full Birth Name:
Mordecai Garrick Nightcoil
"He who protects with a spear"
Title:
"High Prince Mordecai of House Nightcoil" or "Sire" In Less Proper Confrontation
Preferred Name:
Cai - Pronounced "k-EYE"
Nicknames:
His siblings are friendly with the terms "Mordy" and "Mo" but the prince finds these rather unprofessional and unfitting. Distasteful.
.
Age:
28 Years Old - By the time The Gathering comes around.
Gender:
Male - Masculine
Sexuality:
Homoflexible - He's primarily attracted to the same gender, but occasionally attracted to the opposite.
.
• Family Line:
The Nightcoil Line - Serpent
Line Placing:
High Prince/First Born
Skin Bound?:
No. Not yet. Will be bound at this years Gathering after his fifth attempt. The skin of his great grandfather will accept him.
Thoughts on The Gathering?:
He despises it simply for the fact that he has not yet been accepted into a skin. Its been four years of trying, if he doesn't get accepted this year he's signing away for guard duty at the border. Nothing's keeping him here...
Thoughts on The Ball?:
Its fine. A nice way to spot eye candy and practice a bite of socialization. That said, the prince often takes the time to find a sibling to eavesdrop on Head Line conversations while others mingle.
Reputation:
The Warrior Heir
- Renowned for battlefield skill and bravery
- Idolized by soldiers
- Accused of valuing war over diplomacy
- Seen as strong but possibly dangerous in peace

• Appearance Description:
Wip
Skin Description:
As the Nightcoil Line struggle to keep skins intact due to their fragility (snake skins), most are kept in smaller tokens one is able to have on their person. For Mordecai, when and if he is accepted by the skin, this is a thick silver ring worn on his right pointer finger. The skin is strewn inside of the ring to prevent further breakage. The skin itself is rattlesnake, with larger scale outlines clearly visible when looked further into.
.
• Personality:
Mordecai G. Nightcoil moves through the world with the stillness of a hunting serpent - measured, deliberate, and quietly lethal. As a scion of House Nightcoil, he was raised to value patience over passion and precision over display. Power, to him, is not volume or dominance, but restraint: the ability to wait, to endure, and to strike only when the outcome is inevitable. His presence alone carries authority, not because he demands attention, but because he never wastes it.
As the eldest sibling, Mordecai assumed responsibility long before it was formaly placed upon him. His two younger siblings are central to his sense of duty, though he rarely expresses this in ways that resemble warmth. He protects them through distance, severity, and preparation rather than comfort. In his mind, kindness without strength is false mercy, and he would rather be remembered as cold than allow them to be unready for the dangers of their lineage.
His demeanor is often mistaken for cruelty, but it is born from discipline rather than malice. Mordecai does not indulge in unnecessary words, gestures, or emotions. He observes far more than he speaks, cataloging weaknesses and patterns with the patience of a predator. He respects competence, honesty, and resolve, and has little tolerance for those who rely on charm, tradition, or sentiment to mask inadequacy.
It is in this same spirit of control that he regards attachment. Mordecai does not reject connection outrigh, but he is wary of anything that introduces unpredictably of his judgement. Affection, when it brushes too close, is treated like an exposed nerve - acknowledged, guarded, and kept from influencing his decisions. On rare occasions, he may feel an uncharacteristic pull towards someone who proves steady rather than demanding, present rather than intrusive. He does not name this feeling, nor does he act on it openly. Instead, it surfaces in subtle ways: a measured protection, a longer silence, a choice made that cannot be easily justified as strategy alone.
To the world, Mordecai is a prince of iron composure and sharpened will. To those few stand close enough to endure his quiet scrutiny, he is something more dangerous and more human - A man who has mastered control so completely that any fraction in it, however small, carriesb immense weight.

• Strengths & Weaknesses:
