Onyx is an incredibly unique looking dragon – standing at 14 feet (6 to 8 feet at the shoulder) and weighing 1289lbs. His length, however, is one of the many reasons that this dragon stands out. He is measured at around 30 feet long – if not longer – with his tail making up the large majority of his body. In fact, the dragon is basically nothing but a tail. The bottom half of his body is serpentine, having no back legs. Rather than walking like a normal dragon, Onyx slithers along the ground akin to, well, a snake. His long tail ends in a sharp barb-like tip that can be used to jab at any enemies that approach from behind. The serpent-like dragon can also use his tail to wrap around and constrict prey. No spines run along his back, giving him more of a streamline – but bulky – build.
The front half of his body is relatively normal, with two powerful front legs and two large wings which protrude from his shoulders. His front legs, however, are not generally used for walking. Rather, they are used almost solely for digging the tunnels he resides in. Instead, it's his wings – which have three opposable, finger-like appendages at the wing’s thumb – that are used to drag him along the ground and through the tunnels he lives in. As such, his wings are very thick, being almost entirely muscle. How he walks is another interesting factor to this dragon. Aside from the slithering, he will sink the claws on his wing-fingers into the dirt (whether it is below or beside him) to keep his upper body off the ground. Sorta like crawling, in a way. His front legs will occasionally aid the wings in their movements – namely when he is attempting to speed up or make a sharp turn. Given enough speed, his low body can even glide slightly off the ground. This behavior is generally seen when he is traveling through his tunnels.
A long neck protrudes from Onyx’s shoulders, making up the majority of his height. It ends with a narrowish snout, similar to that of a komodo dragon or nile monitor. Towards the back of his skull, two ram-like horns curve around the sides of his head – going just below his lower jaw. These horns, however, do not twist multiple times – looking more like the horns of a big horned sheep than anything else. His eyes are of a silver hue that can be akin to the color of mercury. His tongue is long, silver tipped, and forked. The inside of his mouth as well as the back half of his tongue is black in color. His teeth are sharp and medium sized with larger serpent-like fangs in the front. They are used more so for gripping prey rather than tearing, and point backwards to help hold prey in place.
The pattern and texture of Onyx’s scales are similar to those of snake-like reptiles – smooth and somewhat stretchy, but still very tough. These scales are golden-brown in color, for the most part. The color begins to shift between the middle and end of his tail. Here, his scales fade into an onyx black that is lined with white “veins.” The veins do not appear in the brown parts of his body. They are only seen when his scales begin to fade to black, during which they will fade to their color as well. His horns share a similar pattern to his tail: fading from a light gray to black. However, the white markings occur across the entirety of his horns. His underbelly is more of a tannish brown in color and is quite smooth – and even soft – in texture. The wing membranes start as a smokey, nightfall black and slowly fade to the black onyx color. Veins can also be found on the wing membranes. However, more than just white veins can be seen. Golden veins nestle between the white and black colorations, sometimes even crossing over the white veins. These veins are much thinner than the more apparent white ones, and can be hard to see when not in some sort of light.

Onyx is a kind and gentle beast – rather uncharacteristic of his appearance. He’s not a big fan of violence and will do what he can to avoid it. However, this does not mean he is entirely against it. If pushed too far, the dragon will respond with such. Otherwise, he will just treat everyone with kindness. He especially likes spending time with young children, often babysitting and playing with them when he gets the chance. Though, not many mothers are fond of this as they believe he will harm them.
This fire dragon enjoys the slow, quiet, and peaceful moments in life. If possible, he would do nothing but sleep and eat his life away – not getting up unless he is forced to. This attribute can cause him to be a bit sluggish at times, especially when assigned a job he hates. Or a job in general. Though, this doesn’t mean he won’t see the job through. It’ll just take a while to complete. Thank goodness his bonded is around. If not for them, barely anything would get done.
An added bonus that comes from being lazy: no one will know when you are and are not asleep. Onyx enjoys taking advantage of this idea, often pranking the nearest person when they don’t notice his wakefulness. Generally, it’s just a simple swipe of the tail that knocks their feet from under them. Other times, he’ll pick them up and take them for a joyride. For as lazy as he is, he can be rather energetic – after a good sunbath that is. However, these pranks are saved solely for those he cares for.
Speaking of loved ones, the gemstone-tailed dragon is incredibly protective of them. After all, they’re the only ones that do not see him as some kind of violent, predatory beast. Thus, he will give his life to protect them. If his ally gets hurt, he will enter “mother hen” mode – providing anything they need as quickly as possible. He may even wrap them in his coils so they do not try to move about after being harmed, if they are comfortable with the idea that is.
Onyx can be a bit… empty minded at times. It takes a while for him to piece things together, and even longer to think of any “intelligent” notions. Actually, barely any thought process occurs in that head of his. At least, barely any coherent thoughts. When presented with a topic he has little knowledge on (which is basically all of them), he’ll generally go off on a tangent – either thinking of jokes he can make from what he hears, or going on a whole new, unrelated topic. That is, if he can even stay focused. He’s more likely to stare off into space and think about what sand would taste like than paying attention to the topic at hand. Unless it’s serious, don’t expect much from him.
If there’s one good aspect of this dragon, it’s his persistent nature. He never gives up on anyone or anything. Even when the task becomes nearly impossible, the beast will not give up. The behavior, however, can be both annoying and detrimental. Onyx has been known to completely stop sleeping just so he can finish his task. He has even put himself in danger to get something done. Thus, it is best to prepare him for every situation, so he doesn’t stick to a single plan. Give him options.

- Onyx is incredibly agile, being able to turn a full 180 in mere seconds. He is also very strong, despite his apparent lack of muscles. But do not be fooled, most of his muscles are well hidden due to his serpent-like build. After all, his main tactic when it comes to hunting is constriction.
- While he by no means lacks the stamina, Onyx does not have enough to partake in long chases. Abush is his best weapon. However, do not expect him to attack from above or ground level. He will strike from below. Oh, and don’t try to run. You won’t get very far if he travels underground.
- Thanks to the design of Onyx’s horns and skulls, he can be used as a powerful battering ram. This skill is used to allow him to burst out of the ground – breaking it apart – to grab some prey.
- This fire dragon is considered to be one of the best diggers around, if not the best. He is known to live almost entirely in underground tunnels – which are constantly being expanded. Thus, it only makes sense that he is an expert digger.
- Onyx is an incredibly poor flier with his wings being almost entirely designed to aid him in his movements. His long, heavy body does not aid him in this endeavor, causing much difficulty when it comes to cutting through the air. All he can really do is glide.
- While this gemstone colored dragon can breathe normal fire, he can also use his snake-fangs to squirt some liquid-like flames in the faces of his enemies. Sorta like a spitting cobra. This fire is incredibly dangerous, unlike his normal flames which can barely start a forest fire.
- Onyx… doesn’t understand why he was chosen to be the lead beast. After all, why would anyone want a lazy, empty minded, “good for nothing” monster to lead such a group. Then again, it may have simply been because of his companion. Guess he’ll just have to wait and see.
