... Right. The basic story of Game of Thrones is complicated, spanning seven books and eight TV seasons. Not to mention all the prequel-lore content put there as well. The story is based on two questions:
1. Who will win the War across the Nation to rule the seven Kingdoms of the Lands of Westeros.
2. Will Humanity survive the hidden threat that few truly know of, White Walkers.
And yes there are wolves and dragons.
~
There are many ruling families in the land of Westeros, each vying for power.
House Baratheon
House Greyjoy
House Tyrell
House Lannister
House Stark
House Martell
House Targaryen
And many others...
The Bolded Ones are the more notable ones.

The world in this story was once full of magic, but it somehow disappeared for nearly 300 years until it returns in the actual events of the story. Not the usual magic though... These are strange blood magics.
The Dragons came from a blood ritual of some sort, human sacrifice and became fire made flesh.
The wolves, well dire wolves as they are called, can only be magically linked to people of certain ancestors. This ability is called warging, and allows people to walk into the minds of animals.
Then there is the very confusing wizard dude... The Three Eyed Raven.
Basically he is a SUPER powerful warg who mixed mind walking with blood rituals and was able to move his consciousness through time or something along those lines.

God... I haven't even mentioned the plot of the story yet.
Trouble is brewing in Westeros.
The Hand of the King, Second in Command, dies a mysterious death. So the King goes to find a new hand in his heat friend from childhood. He agrees, but believes the previous hand was assassinated, so he is weary. He is right, and the king is assassinated too.
The King has no heirs, true born heirs. His wife had lied to him, hiding her own illegitimate children and saying they here his. So a lie sits upon the throne. The new Hand of the King finds out the truth, and stages a coup.
He is executed.
His family wants revenge.
War breaks out.
Most of his family is killed.
One becomes a prisoner of war, and two others go into exile.
...
I haven't even talked about Jon or Daenerys.
Only Ned and he dies in the first book, shit.
Yeah the plot is a lot more... Eventful.
What about Tyrian? The White Walkers?
THE DRAGONS?
THE WALL?
TWO WHOLE OTHER WARS HAPPENING OUTSIDE OF WESTEROS...
Ugh.
