Asael sat up with a jolt in bed, sweat dripping down his temples. His chest was rapidly going up and down, his hands tightly clenching the sweat-soaked sheets. He closed his eyes, muttering things under his breath, his breathing slowly but surely relaxing. Once he felt like he had a grip on reality, he ran a hand through his messy copper colored hair. He slowly opened his eyes, looking around the room to make sure that there wasn’t anyone hiding in the shadows. Once he was satisfied that nothing was going to jump out of the darkness and bite his ass, he got out of bed.

He went over to the bathroom, opened the door, and instantly turned the water on in the shower. He slipped his clothes off and looked at himself in the mirror as he waited for the water to warm up. His heterochromatic eyes roamed over his body riddled with scars, pain briefly flickering across his face before it disappeared. He glanced at the phoenix rising from the ashes on his right arm, reminding him that he was reborn after everything that happened in the war. His eyes then snagged on the sunflower on the left side of his chest, pain once again flickering across his face with the memories that came with that tattoo.

He ran his hand over his five o’clock shadow, making a mental note to shave his beard in the next couple of days. Once he noticed that the mirror started to get foggy, he stepped into the shower, letting the warm water trail down his tense body. He should really tell his therapist more about what happened and everything that he did in the war. He knows it would make him feel like he gets some weight off his shoulders, but he doesn’t want her to look at him differently after hearing the horrors. He shook his head, knowing that he should stop thinking about this before he gets further into his head about it.

He quickly washed himself up before he put on a pair of jeans, a black short-sleeved shirt, a red and black flannel, and a pair of black boots. He slipped a watch onto his left wrist and grabbed his phone off his nightstand, quickly glancing at the time and seeing it was only six AM in the morning. He supposes he has enough time to go get some coffee and some donuts for the office before he heads into work. He stuffed his wallet, badge, and keys into his pocket, grabbing his gun out of the safe before slipping it into the holster at his hip, his flannel concealing it so people don’t freak out.

He opened the door to his house and locked it, tugging and turning the handle a few times to ensure that no one was getting in. He gave a slight wave to the neighbor as they were getting into their car. He was surprised by how lucky he was when he moved into the neighborhood, with how nice everyone was, and that both of his neighbors were just lovely couples. It definitely makes things easier when he is welcomed into a community than trying to have people run him out of it.

He slipped into his car and made his way down to his favorite coffee place. He walked in, and the people working behind the counter instantly had smiles on their faces once they saw who it was. He will admit it is a bit bad that he loves his caffeine when the workers of his favorite place know what his order always is. Then again, he knows if he stopped coming, he might not be able to function without any caffeine in his system with how much he relies on it now.

“Good morning, Asael! The usual?” Katherine asked, already starting to move around.

He let a small chuckle out and nodded his head. “Of course. How has this morning been going so far?” He waved at the other workers in the back, knowing them fairly well as well. He knows Katherine fairly well due to coming in, and she was his sister’s best friend.

She shrugged her shoulders, heating the milk up as she spoke. “Surprisingly slow this morning for a Tuesday. I’m sure that it will get busier, though.” She poured the milk into the to-go coffee cup before putting the lid on. “Are you still having the nightmares?” He glanced away, giving her the answer that she needed. “I figured.” She sighed, running a hand through her golden hair. “Still the same time on Friday?”

He nodded his head as he handed her more than what the coffee was, knowing that she wouldn’t argue with him. “Yeah.” His throat closed just thinking about Friday. It is the tenth anniversary of his sister’s death. He can’t believe it’s been this long, knowing that he can’t hide from it forever. “I’ll see you later, Kate. Thank you as always for my cup of sunshine in the morning.” He gave her a wink before he rushed out of the building.

He grabbed some donuts a few minutes later, giving them thanks before he made his way to work. He parked and glanced at the building, his hands rubbing his face to get rid of the exhaustion. He knows that he picked this career since he is good at it, but sometimes he wishes that he had never chosen this path. He grabbed the box of donuts and made his way in and set it on the table in the break room. He made his way to his desk and plopped down in the chair, enjoying the quiet before others get here for the day. He turned on the computer and started to get to work on some of the cases that he had to finish paperwork before the court hearing.

A few hours went by before he got a tap on his shoulder. He swiveled around in his chair, and a grin spread across his face at who it was. It was his best friend and his partner. He is surprised that they are friends with how vastly different they are. He stood a smidge higher than himself, and his raven-colored hair blended well with his ocean blue eyes.

He stood up and hugged his friend. “Ambrose.” He greeted, slapping his back. “I'm glad you are back since I can’t stand most of the detectives in this place.” He grumbled as he looked around, making sure no one was too close to hear him say that. “How was the honeymoon in Paris?”

“As expected. She had the time of her life there, as did I. Only wished we were gone longer since I never wanted to come back after being there for a month.” Ambrose stated as he leaned against the desk and crossed his arms over his chest. “Do you want us to both come this Friday with you and Kate for more support?”

There it was again, people bringing up his sister. He didn’t want it to keep being brought up, but he knows that Amrbose is only asking since he cares. “That would be great.” He said, a tight smile on his face.

Ambrose opened his mouth to say something, but it was interrupted when Asael’s phone started to ring. “Asael.” He answered, his head nodding to everything that was being said to him over the phone by his supervisor. “Will do. Bye”

“What was that about?” Ambrose asked as he took a sip of Asael’s now cold coffee. “I hope it isn’t some rookie thing that the others could take care of.”

“Well, it is. Sounds like a patient from the mental institution a handful of blocks from here escaped last night. We are tasked to find them and bring them in.” He muttered, annoyance heard in his voice as he started to clean up his desk and turn his computer off.

“Let the games begin.”

Reese's calves burned. She had been running for so long, she wasn't even sure where she was anymore. It looked like the outskirts of town, nothing beyond a certain point except forest and farmland. Nobody would recognize her out here. She stopped on the sidewalk, hands on her knees as she caught her breath. She glanced around, her eyes catching on a glowing sign that said 'MOTEL'.

Bingo.

She crossed the street, hurrying into the lobby. It had begun to drizzle halfway into her escape but she didn't really mind. She shook some loose water droplets off her body before approaching the woman behind the desk. Reese smiled politely. "Hello. I'd just like a room for one, please," She said. Her voice was soft and high pitched, kind of like a small bell.

The woman looked at her suspiciously, but she sat up and started typing on the computer anyway. "Payment?" She asked, holding her hand out. Reese reached into the pocket of the jeans she'd stolen off someone's clothesline and fished out the exact amount needed.

The woman seemed bewildered since she was certain she'd forgotten to tell Reese the amount, but her shock was short-lived. She handed Reese a room key and Reese headed off to find her room.

Twenty minutes later, she finally found her room on the third floor. She quickly holed herself up inside, closing all the blinds and curtains. She put a chair under the door handle and headed into the bathroom to shower. When she stepped out, she stared at herself in the mirror.

She hadn't seen herself in years. She had pale skin, freckles scattered along her face and shoulders, long, blindingly white hair, and pale red eyes. Her eyes were large and wide like a deer's. She got dressed once more and sighed as she sat on the bed.

Asael sat in the car, his thumbs thumping against the steering wheel as he looked up at the building. The mental institution. It looked the same as the last time he was here so many years ago, trying to get answers out of the person who killed his sister. It was still white, walls so tall that it would be hard to scale over it with barbed wiring at the top. He has been siting in this car for the last ten minutes, not really moving as he isn't ready for the memories that are about to flood his head that he locked away. He wished Ambrose was with him, but he was talking to the girls parents to see if he could get any information on where she could be hiding.

He took a deep breath and took his gun out of his holster and placed it into the small hand case he has in the car. He locked it and then stashed it away so no one would look in and see it in plain site. He could bring it in with him, but he knows they would only take it away to prevent anything from happening if a patient were to attack him. He thought he would be ready after he put his gun away, but he was not. He sat there for another five minutes before he finally pushed himself to get out of the car and walk towards the entrance of the building.

He slipped his hands in his pocket as he climbs the few steps and pushed the doors open. He went to the check in area and flashed his badge, showing he is a detective from the police department. They quickly got his information and made sure he didn't have anything on him that patients could take and use. He had to make himself bite his tongue and try not to move away as people were patting him down and getting in his space. If he could skip this part, he would love that as he hates when people are in his personal space and touching him. He knows it's for safety and that is why they haven't received a verbal lashing from him.

Once he was cleared, he followed one of the nurses to the director to get more information on how the woman escaped. She must be pretty damn good or good friends for someone to sneak her out as it would be a hell of a time to try and escape over the wall. She could very well be something else not entirely human, like him for example. Ambrose doesn't know and he would like to keep it that way more for his safety and to keep him from the horrors of his world.

"Detective Ambrose. Welcome to our facility. I'm Dr. Wynn." A woman with chocolate brown locks to the top of her shoulders stood behind an oak desk littered with papers. "Please take a seat."

Ambrose sat down in a crappy leather chair and leaned back, his hands folded against his stomach. "It sounds like a patient escaped? How?"

Dr. Wynn glanced away, clearly unsure how the patient escaped. "We are unsure at this time. The time she escaped, the cameras somehow went down. We are still investigating the situation so it doesn't happen again." She said as she nervously wrung her hands.

How interesting that the cameras went out at the same time that she ended up escaping. It's going to make it more difficult, but that is what he enjoys. He enjoys the excitement in a hunt. "That's unfortunate." He said coolly as he looked her over. "Were you involved in helping her escape?"

"M-Me? Oh no! Not at all. I would loose my job if that was the cause. I was with my husband on a date when it happened. I can verify my alibi if you want." Dr. Wynn said, still nervous.

He knew she was telling the truth so he wasn't going to have her verify it. "Very well. What's their name and describe her to me what she looks like." He said as he reached into his back pocket and pulled out a small notepad to jot some notes about the information he is about to be provided.

"Her name is Reese. She is unique in a way." She said as she typed something up on her computer. "Pure as white hair, red eyes, pale skin, and freckles."

He jotted down everything she said, the red eyes standing out to him the most. They must not be contacts since Dr. Wynn didn't mention otherwise. "Dangerous?"

She shrugged her shoulders as he glanced at him. "Who isn't dangerous nowadays, especially if you're a patient here."

"Fair enough." He closed his notebook before standing up. "Thank you for your time and the information you could provide us. If there is anything else you can remember, here is my card and call me anytime." He dropped his card on her desk and made his way over to the door. "Have a lovely day, Dr. Wynn."

He quickly made his way out of the facility, not wanting to be there any longer. It gave him the heebie jeebies. Someone had to be part of her escaping or she had the ability to turn off the cameras and escape somehow.

Once he got into his car, he felt his phone buzz, indicating he got a text. From what Ambrose said, her parents were the ones to put her in the facility due to seeing the future. He snorted at that, his head shaking. Of course they would do that as they are afraid of things they can't explain. Aside from that, her parents didn't know much and gave them a picture of her. Exactly how Dr. Wynn explained her.

From his experience with being a detective, when people are hiding they are going to go somewhere low and quiet with not much traffic. With that being said, the outskirts of town will be the best bet. First he'll start with motels and then if there isn't anything useful, he will start looking into barns and abandoned houses. Those are always what people have liked and always think they are going to be safe.

He drove for about two hours when he finally came to his last stop at a motel. He glanced at the parking, only a few vehicles littered about. The rain just started to drizzle down, making the lights from the motel sign reflect against his face. He took a sigh and got out, quickly rushing to the check-in so he didn't get soaked. He brushed the loose damp strands of his hair out of his face and quickly flashed his badge at the woman at the counter.

He walked up and pulled his phone out, clicking on the picture that Ambrose sent him of Reese. "We are investigating the disappearance of Reese who escaped from a mental institution sometime between last night and today. Have you seen her at all, ma'am?" He asked coolly as he turned the phone towards her to show the picture.

She gasped at nodded her head. "I have. I checked her in not that long ago. I think I gave her the keys to room six." Said said, her hands clenched to her chest.

"Thank you ma'am for your help." He said, his head tipping slightly tipping towards her in appreciation. He made his way out of the office and down the row of rooms until he came to room six. He put his hand on the stock of the gun at his hip as he harshly rapped his knuckles against the door.

"Reese, open this door and don't make any sudden movements. This is Detective Asael."

Reese's head turned toward the door a split second before the man knocked. Her eyes widened. She knew the possibility of them finding her was quite high, but she hadn't expected it to be so soon. She sighed, rubbing her face frustratedly. She could not go back to that hellhole. All it did was make her more crazy, and she wasn't even crazy to begin with. She stood slowly, eyebrows furrowing.

"Go away!" She called. Her voice was on the quieter side, even when she was trying to be loud. Her words were slightly garbled. She knew her words would do nothing to deter them, but she couldn't help herself. She was angry and frustrated to have been put in the institution in the first place, since nothing was wrong with her. She just wanted to live her life like a normal person.

Plus, her calves still burned from running for so long and she really didn't want to have to do that twice in one night. She wanted to sleep, eat, and maybe even smoke a cigarette. She'd smoked them in the institution plenty of times and they did well to calm her down. She glanced around the room and grabbed the body of a lamp, taking the lampshade off, so she could use it as defense if needed.

Asael just wished that sometimes people would just listen when he asked something. It is so easy, yet he doesn't understand why people have to be hard to deal with. It frustrates him to no end when that happens. He just wants to strangle them to give them a lesson and make sure they listen next time. Unfortunately, he can't do that to most as that would be assault and he rather not be suspended from work for a bit due to it. He would very much like to keep his job since he does enjoy his work most of the time when he isn't doing something as simple as this that rookies can do. He also can't pretend that she isn't here either.

He clenched his teeth, his jaw muscle flickering in annoyance. He doesn't have the patience for her today whatsoever. "For the love of god." He muttered under his breath. He really didn't want to do this but here he is. "I can't do that unfortunately, Reese. Since you are disobeying me, I am going to have to break down the door since you aren't giving me much of a choice." He said coolly, annoyance clear as day heard in his voice.

He took his phone out and sent a quick text to Ambrose about the situation, telling him he will call him if he needs to. He then slipped his gun out of the holster and pointed it at the door. He did hear her moving around in the room, so he wouldn't be surprised if she grabbed something to use as self defense against him. He gets that she is scared and frustrated and whatever other emotions that she is feeling, but he doesn't care enough to be more gentle or slow about it. He really could use a cigarette after this since he hasn't thought about having one at all today yet, which is odd for him.

He took a deep breath and then started to kick his foot against the door as quick as he could. It told took two kicks before the door flung open and he walked in, his gaze quickly looking around to find her. He closed the somewhat of a broken door behind him and swung his body around and pointed his gun at her, his gaze cool and calculated. She was standing there, holding a lamp in her delicate hands with the shade off. The muscle in his jaw flickered again at that. He would very much not liked to get hit today. He does heal fairly quickly compared to humans, but he rather not be beaten today. He had enough of that in his lifetime.

"I'm asking you kindly to put that lamp down." He grumbled, his gun still pointed at her in case he has to use it. He hopes to god, not that he believes that there is one anymore, that she will listen to him. "I rather not shoot you, so it would make everything easier for the both of us if you put that down slowly and then sit on the bed." He said as he motioned slightly with his gun to the bed. "If you cooperate, I promise not to take you in right away. I just want to talk and get your side before anything else."

He has always been trustworthy. All his friends know that and he always keeps his word. There was only a few times when he was in the war that he didn't, but that was out of his control with the events that happened. He might seem like an asshole, cold hearted, annoyed all the time, blunt, and ruthless, but that is just how he is until he knows he can trust people. He has had too many people stab him in the back later down the road and he, unfortunately, has trust issues because of it. Once he knows he can trust him, he is protective of them, sarcastic, caring, and loyal to them until they prove to him otherwise.

He really needs her to trust him somewhat and he hates what he is going to do next as it is more of a danger for him than her. "I promise." He said as he slowly lowered the gun and put the safety on before slipping it into the holster at his hip. He raised his hands slightly to show no harm but is ready to fight barehanded if needed. "I also don't really want to hurt you, that's the last thing I want to do." He mumbled as he moved towards the table that was next to the television in the room. He leaned against it, his hands still slightly in the air.

"Just tell me everything from the beginning from when you got put into the mental institution to now."

Reese had no idea what he said while he was still behind the door, just that he'd said something. She could tell he was annoyed, but she didn't really care. She just stared at him when he asked her to put the lamp down, not moving an inch. However, she did have to put the lamp down to sign. She sent him a glare after a moment before setting the lamp on the bed.
She sighed. "I'm not crazy. My parents put me in there because they never cared about me, and they don't listen either." She started, her hands moving to sign the words. "They neglected me as a kid. Focused mainly on my brother. Thought I was weird." She added. "Institutions are for people with real issues. Some of the people I met there were really messed up, but I still made friends with them. Just... couldn't stay. It wasn't my place," She said.
"So I snuck out at midnight. Nobody helped me, it was just myself. There are tunnels under the institute that made it real easy." She explained.
"You don't have to take me back there. I'm not crazy." She repeated. "I can prove it. I don't want to go back there." She added, a little more desperately.

When Reese finally put the lamp down, he relaxed ever so slightly. He lowered his hands and instead crossed his arms over his chest. When she glared at him, he glared right back, not giving two shits what she thinks about him. He knows that she is probably annoyed with him finding her so quickly, but that is his job. He wouldn't be asked to do certain cases if he weren't good at his job. He would like to keep his reputation and not ruin it if he could. He has a slight fleeting feeling that she might be the one to tarnish it.

I'm not crazy.

Yeah, until she can prove to him otherwise, he is going to consider that she is crazy. He just raised his brows at her, his gaze showing no compassion whatsoever. This is stupid. He doesn't know why he is giving her the option to explain herself. What was that saying that he hears all the time? That all people are crazy? To be honest, he's barely really paying attention to what she is really saying, only catching the most important information here and there. He should've just arrested her and gently but forceable have her make his way to his car and then back to the institution.

He pinched the bridge of his nose, knowing that he probably should've had Ambrose do this as he has more compassion and is more soft spoken than him. This is why they make such a good pair. It's the whole saying of good cop and bad cop. He doesn't mean to be the way that he is, but considering everything that he has gone through in his life, it makes sense why he acts the way he does. He prefers it this way honestly, since it takes him longer for people to get close to him. Keeping them at arms lengths is the best.

"Okay, listen here, Reese. I really don't give two shits on what your parents think of you. In all honesty, they could say are an angel child and I still wouldn't care." He started off, his gaze not leaving her face. He wants to watch every little move and expression she makes. If she calls him a monster, so be it. "I did not ask you what your parents thought of you. I asked you what happened." He explained, knowing that she probably isn't thinking straight. "I want the reason as to why they thought you belonged there. What was the reason that they sent you there in the first place?"

He knows he is probably being harsh with her, but he is trying to get the answers he needs before he does anything else. If his mother was alive to this day along with his sister, they would probably tell him to stay away. He changed for the worse, but they aren't here so it doesn't matter. As for his father, he has no idea what he is up to anymore. He stopped keeping track of him years ago after certain things. Good riddance as he was never really a nice man

Ahh, tunnels is how she escaped. Makes sense since it seems like the institution was built decades ago. If it was during the wars where if they needed to evacuate safety and without being noticed, the tunnels would make the most sense. They probably forgot that they even existed since it probably has been decades since they even had to use them.

"Then prove it to me. No games, tricks, or mind games."

Reese stared at him, trying to calm herself down so she didn't lunge at him. She exhaled softly and held her hands up, fingers splayed out, and her eyebrows raised expectantly as she approached him. Then, she kept one hand up and used the other to touch his arm. Her eyes rolled back so far you could only see the whites of them as she was thrust into her mind.

She saw what she presumed was his bedroom, and his house in general, logging certain things in her memory so she could recognize it easily. She saw a snowy city, different from theirs. She saw a glimpse of a hotel room as well, a nicer one than this. She retracted her hand, and her eyes returned to normal.

"You have a movie poster in your bedroom. It's an old western movie." She began. "And your coffee is organized in a very specific way, so it's easier to grab when you wake up. Your desk is in the left corner of your room. Your bed is in the middle of the back wall," She listed. "Your license plate number is 480 6874." She continued, just in case he needed more convincing.

"That's why they put me in there.” She added, backing up again.

When Reese started to come towards him, Asael started to shift his feet. Sure, she had her hands up to show that she isn't going to do harm, but that doesn't mean anything to him. He has had people in the past that he has arrested or kill in the war that would have their hands up to only deceive him when they got closer to him. He isn't going to treat this any differently. He shifted to where he was standing up straighter, one arm dangling at his side while the other hovered above the stock of his gun. If she indicates or moves a certain way that will put him in danger, he won't hesitate to pull his gun out and at least shoot her in the shoulder to distract her for a moment.

He tensed when she touched him, not caring whatsoever that someone is giving him physical touch. Now, if that was Ambrose, that would be different as that is his best friend and he knows that he won't hurt him and trusts him. He knows jack shit about Reese. All of his alarm bells are ringing in his head from her touching to him to what is she going to do next. He is just hoping this will be over soon so that he can take her back to the insituation and never have to deal with her again. Not that she seems like she is a danger to anyone, but to make sure that he keeps his job.

His eyes never left her, especially when her eyes rolled to the back of her head. He raised a brow, not creeped out by the slightest due to the horrors of his own world. It was more interesting than anything, making him wonder what is going to come next. Is she going to say that he is going to die in the next five years? He wouldn't be surprised if that was the case. Is she going to tell him that she is going to find someone he loves soon? He for sure wouldn't believe that one since him loving someone would be an understatement of the year. It would be impossible.

He looked at her a bit dumbly when she said that he has a movie poster in his room. "Who doesn't have a movie poster in their rooms?" He muttered, feeling that was kind of a dumb thing. In all honesty, he wouldn't have one in his room if the poster hadn't been from his sister. "Well, yeah. Who doesn't have their coffee somewhat in an organized way so it could be easier? Though, I haven't been drinking much recently at home and go to a shop instead for the day." He rolled his eyes at this, knowing this was rude but didn't care in the slightest. This is why he gets in trouble sometimes because he is so blunt. "Can I just say that I feel like everyone's bed is in the middle of the wall in their bedroom?" When she named off his license plate number, he was slightly impressed. Key word is slightly. "Interesting."

He doesn't remember that last time that he has came across someone that has her ability. She must be a Seer of some sorts. He hasn't come by them often since they are more valuable to people and others for their abilities. If it gets out that she is one and someone in his, well their world now, finds out about her, he has a feeling that they will do anything in their power to try and take her for their own. He was more racking his head with everything going on rather than her showing him what she could do.

"Well, welcome to my world where I live with people similar to you. They range from werewolves to vampires to wizards to whatever you can think of." He has a feeling that she might have no clue what he is talking about and he may look a bit crazy, but he doesn't care much. If he has to show her what he is, so be it. "Your parents just don't know how to handle something from our world when they see something they can't explain. That is probably why they sent you to the mental insituation to being with." He said as he shrugged his shoulders. Humans are always so fascinating to him.

"I still have to bring you back, Reese? Do you know that it would jeopardize my job and everything I have worked for it I don't?"
