Malachi's eyes widened when he saw Raz. She is the one handling my gadgets? She's just a kid! Who is this girl? What is her experience? Malachi tensed when she saw the little girl run over to her. He thought she was going to start playing with the pieces, but she stopped short of the table and started speaking to Raz with her hands. Malachi was distracted from his distress a moment to make an analysis. Sign language is not universal. He didnt recognize any of the signs they were using. His curiosity died instantly when Raz shouted her triumph. If she's done something to it we'll never get home. He wanted to run over there and make sure everything was right, but the look Mel gave him advised against it. He tugged at his shirtsleeve anxiously watching her celebrate her victory. Malachi squirmed awaiting her diagnosis.

Mel glanced up at Raz as she spoke. Finn looked up from his game with Rhea to ask, "What does it do?" "It takes you to different worlds! I think. That's what I've gathered so far. I'm not sure how it works, or why it exists at all, but if we can figure out how to use it-" Raz cut herself off, "Well, if we can figure out how to use it, it would be utterly useless. A world-traveling watch isn't going to help us against Rowe." The group was silent, all of them staring at Raz with various levels of confusion on their face. Except for Kie. Kie would call muffins pancakes if Raz asked him too. Raz seemed to notice the looks and immediately tried to defend herself, "Okay guys, come on. Don't look at me like that. Lots of weirder things have happened to us than finding a world-traveling doohickey." Finn opened his mouth to give a presumably smart-ass response but was immediately silenced by a murderous glare from Kie. There was a reason Raz was the sweetest one of all of them. Somebody had to balance Mr. Gloomy. Rhea spoke up after a tense moment of silence, "So what are they even here for?" "Johanna is going to work with us, probably helping with the experiments. Malachi has been assigned to work with Raz." Mel said. "Work with me? I don't need any help. Gray knows that." Raz's tone was confused and almost hurt. Mel knew she loved what she did, and someone assuming that she needed help definitely damaged her pride. Mel noticed the stiffening to Kie's shoulders as Raz spoke. A showdown between Gray and Kie. That would be the fight of the century. Perhaps the millenia. Kie placed a hand on Raz's shoulder, his touch more comforting than he had ever shown any one of them before, "Gray's probably just planning ahead for something. You know how he is." Raz sighed, her eyes still downcast, "I know. I guess I could use some help." The words weren't convincing. Mel felt herself growing angry again. How dare these two waltz into their lives and ruin their routines? She couldnt keep the bite out of her voice this time, "Don't worry, Raz. Think of him as an assistant, nothing more and nothing less."

Johanna heard Malachi curse in a foreign language under his breath. Johanna didnt see why it matter that they knew, she had already told them where they were from. Although, they definitely were not getting his watch back now. The gadget girl, Jaz or something, seemed nit happy to work with Malachi. Its alright, girl, you won't hear a peep out of him. Johanna wasn't sure, but it seemed like the rest of the group treated Spaz differently. Like she was a very dangerous child. Johanna had met dangerous children. The girl did not seem like one of them. Key weird name was extra odd. He kept glaring at anyone who said anything to Gadget Girl. Key noticed Malachi's anxious squirming and was seemingly trying to obliterate him with his eyeballs. Respectable angry face, but he better make someone else's favorite person his target before Johanna made him hers.

Mel sighed and sank down onto the couch. Gray hadn't given them any orders beyond taking them to meet the team, so she assumed they needed to keep them here until they were told otherwise. Nev moved and sat beside her, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. He leaned in and whispered in her ear, "You okay?" "I don't know. Everything changed so fast." "Well now you know what we felt when you showed up," he teased as Ada climbed up beside Mel, snuggling into her other side. "Yeah, okay. That was your fault, anyway. You're a shit spy." She found herself smiling as she spoke, looking to Ada when she felt the girl poke her arm. "You promised me ice cream." She signed eagerly. Mel chuckled, "Okay, fine. Go get some from the mess hall." Ada's eyes brightened and she jumped off the couch, running around Johanna and Malachi to the door and disappearing down the hallway. She settled in next to Nev, finally letting herself relax. Kie and Raz walked past them, Raz opening the door and walking out as well. It was hard to miss Kie's burning glare as he passed Johanna and Malachi, shutting the door softly behind him. This was going to be fun. Edited at May 25, 2025 02:25 PM by _Moonshadow_

Johanna and Malachi just stood for a minute as most everyone filed out of the room. Malachi stared at his gadgets, itching to pick them up and inspect them for damages or tampering. He wasn't going to speak up so Johanna did it for him. She flopped down into a chair and shrugged her shoulders. "So... what now?" The question undirected but she wanted an answer out of Mel and Nev. A real answer, not another avoiding-the-question answer. Johanna wanted to confirm they were real people and not just mindless servants of the angry guy. Oh yeah, someone is due for a serious discussion with me and my sword. Blue marks were already forming on Malachi's jaw and cheek. He bruised my Mal's perfect face. No one does that. Some of Johanna's old fury was returning. No one touches my Malachi but me. (Sorry took awhile) Edited at May 27, 2025 11:37 AM by Spring Rain

Mel glanced up at Johanna, a scowl returning to her face. "Now, you stay here and do as you're told." She didn't offer any other explanation, because to be honest, she didn't know. Rhea didnt let the tense silence linger for long, "Now, we drink." She stood from her seat, her tall form surprisingly graceful for her size. "What do you say to a trip to the Tiger?" The question was directed at Mel and Nev, and Finn stood as well. The Pink Tiger was a bar that the group, and everyone else in the Black Rose, frequented. Only the most trusted members of the Black Rose Resistance were allowed in, and the bar was a highly kept secret. Which was exactly was Mel was flabbergasted that Rhea brought it up in front of Johanna and Malachi. If anyone outside of the resistance knew about it, the place could be shut down. So could the resistance. Nev didn’t seem concerned at all, "Sure, why not?" Mel stumbled over her words as she stood with Nev, gesturing to Johanna and Malachi, "What about them?" Rhea shrugged, "Take them with us. If they're going to be kept on the base, it's not like we have to worry about them escaping to tell someone. Besides, they look like they could use a few drinks." How was she not bothered by this? She took a moment to calm herself, knowing that arguing with Rhea was pointless. Arguing with almost anyone on this base was pointless. She stifled a sigh and nodded her head at Johanna and Malachi. "Come on." Finn left to go find Kie and Raz, and they all gathered at the exit to the base, all of them walking outside into the chill night air. The darkness was made up for by the bright lights of New York City, all of the citizens of the city finally leaving their homes for the promise of partying and drinks. The group walked toward the direction of the bar, all of them chatting together when they reached an abandoned store front on a corner. The building had been abandoned for years, the inside dark and damp. It didn't resemble a bar, and Mel remembered how confused she had been when she came here the first time. The group entered the desolate building and Kie walked over to the far corner of the room, moving broken crates and tarps off of a hidden trap door, pulling it up as the others began climbing down a spiral staircase. Below was the actual bar, a cozy warmly lit space with an assortment of tables and chairs and a long bar in the back. Music played and the soft noise of chatter and ice clinking in glasses surrounded them. The bar wasn't super busy tonight, only a few groups of people gathered around. Mel felt at ease around the people that she knew well, but part of her felt like Johanna and Malachi shouldn't be here. (BTW this is dystopian and the legal drinking age was changed to 18 a while ago in my story lol)

(Oh ya didnt think about that. Johanna wouldnt care. Malachi definitely would but they are who knows how old so whatever.) Mel was getting on Johanna's last nerve. She might have freaked out if Rhea hadn't suggested a drink. Phoebe's God knows I need one. Even if Phoebe herself wouldn't approve. She jumped up from her chair fast as Rhea finished the sentence. Malachi looked suspicious of the offer, but to tired at this point to argue. The two followed their keepers to a seemingly abandoned building, Johanna attempting to make conversation with everyone and Malachi keeping quiet. Key moved stuff aside and let them in a hidden door, down the stairs into quiet bar. A few people sat at card tables chatting, fewer at the bar nursing a drink. It was the quietest bar Johanna had ever been too. Being here made her feel more at ease, despite Mel's dirty looks. As much as she wanted to break off and get a drink or place a bet on a game, she didnt have any money thanks to these guys. They probably would rather her stay close anyways. Or not. Mel might like her better if she disappeared. Either way, she decided she'd stick around, at least until she got a feel for the place anyways.

Mel walking up to the bar and ordered a drink, sitting down at their usual table next to Nev and Raz. Rhea, Finn and Kie sat on the other side of the table. Everyone in the group had a drink in their hand, Finn tipping back a shot and nearly blowing it out his nose when Rhea made a funny comment. No one bothered to help him as the group burst into laughter, even Kie chuckling a little. Finn was leaned over the table, coughing violently as whiskey dripped from his chin. None of them had finished a single drink and they were all acting drunk. Eventually the group diverged onto a more serious conversation, Nev speaking up, "So Raz, have you finished those flash bombs yet? Nash said we'll need them for the next mission." Raz nodded as she took a drink of her vodka before responding, "I've got most of them finished. A few of them were faulty, and one of them blew up on me. I think the gunpowder was deterioating, but they should work fine." Alcohol had a surprising affect on Raz. While Mel had initally assumed it would only make her more erratic, the liquid actually seemed to mellow her out. Raz was also able to hold her liqour well, better than most of them. Finn was always the first to throw up. "Wait, hold up. Flash bombs? Valentine is sending us into another active laboratory?" Finn asked, his red eyebrows raised in surprise. Kie nodded, "He said he recieved a report that the scientists there were making too much headway, he wants to try to get as many out as we can." Mel ignored the nausea churning in her gut at the idea of entering another lab, taking a long drink of her margaritta. It had taken her weeks to finally stomach going into an abandoned lab, let alone an active one. Rhea snorted, "Last time we went to an active lab, we came out with an ice-cream obsessed kid and the president's psychotic daughter." Rhea was lying, that wasn't the last time. The last time was when they saved her, but thankfully her friend didn't mention it. Raz seemed visibly uncomfortable at the mention of Zora, her once friend that had turned out to be a backstabbing liar. Raz still wasn't completely accepting of that yet. Mel seen Kie's eyes land on Raz, his brow barely creased in concern, but he didn't say anything. Yet. "Yeah, well, maybe we'll get the job done easier this time with our new friends." Mel said, speaking for the first time since they got there. Her words seemed normal on surface level, but her tone was poisonous.

After the group ordered their drinks, they sat down at a table with just enough chairs for them, so Jo decided her and Mal could sit by themselves, which was fine with her. She didnt take a table, instead settling in a barstool. She nodded for Malachi to take one next to her. She nodded to the bartender. "I'll have your strongest drink." She pointed a thumb back at the table where the rest were sitting. "They're paying for it." "And I will have the least strongest thing you have," Malachi said tiredly. "Please." The bartender nodded and poured two drinks. "Yall arnt from around here." He commented, his voice drawled slow. Johanna looked up from her drink. "Don't sound like you are either," she retorted. "I havnt heard one person here say 'yall'." The bartender shrugged his shoulders. "That's fair. At least I don't dress like I'm a knight in a pitcher book." He nodded to Jo, eyeing her armor. She took a swig of her drink, ignoring the comment. "This is good. Another!" Johanna shouted, breaking her glass on the floor. Malachi rubbed the bridge of his nose. Everyone at the bar was staring at them, and the resistance members looked various levels of displeased. "I'm very sorry about that," Malachi apologized to the bartender. "Where she's from, that's how one shows she really likes her drink. Its considered the polite thing actually. I will clean up the glass for you if you like." The bartender looked a little surprised, but not like it was the craziest thing he had seen that day. "No, no that's fine. Im glad she likes her drink." He grabbed another cup, plastic this time, and filled it with the same strong alcohol as the last one. He slid it to Johanna, who gulped half of it in one chug.

Mel rolled her eyes so hard they nearly fell out of their sockets. Why were these people hellbent on acting like total imbiciles? Mel gave Rhea a look that said, 'I told you so.' Before turning her attention back to the commotion. Kie was glaring at them, Raz just looked confused, Finn looked mildly offended and Rhea was wearing her thinking expression. Nev was...unbothered, as usual. He had no idea how much that infuriated her. Nev seemed to sense her rising irritation and spoke quietly so only she could hear, "Birdie, you really need to calm down." "I'm calm. Perfectly calm." She lifted her glass to her lips and promptly swallowed all of it in one gulp, setting it down with more force than nessacary, "See? I've never been more calm." Nev at least had the decency to look concerned. "Okay, I think we've had enough alcohol, yeah?" he tried to discreetly move her glass away, to which she snatched it and stood. "You told me to calm down. This is liquid relaxation." She walked away before he could protest, walking up to the bar again. She cast a sidelong glance at Johanna, her gaze scorching despite the growing fuzziness in her head. She'd have a few more drinks, she'd go back to the base, and she'd sleep this off. No big deal.
