Mel felt the anger of a thousand suns burn in her chest as the girl called her out. Gray shot a look over his shoulder at her, promising to make her life hell. Great. Not only was she going to get punished by Valentine, but now Gray would have her running until she dropped. And after that, he would proceed to kick her ass in sparring, just like he did every time. She stored away the boy's full name. Malachi. Not a common name in this day and age. But to be fair, neither of them looked like they were from this day or age. Gray spoke again, his voice not loosing any of it's steel, "You're in no position to ask questions, either. I ask, you answer, and maybe you'll get your things back. Now, what were you doing following of our men?" Valentine still watched at Gray's left, his expression thoughtful but becoming more irritated as time went on. Mel found herself getting antsy as well. She hated watching things like this, even if the people involved deserved it. It reminded her too much of her time in the labs, and as much as she told herself she had gotten over it, she knew she hadn't. Nev must have noticed her fidgeting and grabbed her hand in his own, giving it a small squeeze. Mel squeezed back, hoping that the girl would talk so she could get out of this metal box. |

Malachi rolled his eyes. "Oh so your perfectly fine with name-dropping me but you won't let me tell them who you are." Johanna smirked. "I have no idea what your talking about." She turned back to the angry man with a mischievous grin on her face. "Like I said, no one threatens me and gets away with it." Malachi added hurriedly, "We just got here and they were the first people we met. We thought they could be helpful for my research." He threw Jo a look. Oh yeah good idea Mal. Of course you would think of that. She studied the man's grumpy face. Unless that makes them think we are spying on them. I have a feeling they won't like that. She could hear Malachi's sarcasm in her head. "Anymore than they like you threatening one of their own?" Johanna scoffed. l'm not the one doing the threatening here. Im only answering questions. |

Gray's eyes narrowed behind his mask, and he glanced over his shoulder at Mel and Nev for confirmation. Mel could hardly meet his eyes, but thankfully Nev spoke for both of them. "No research was mentioned, sir." He answered smoothly, but Mel could hear the strain in his voice. Gray only gave a nod in response, the movement barely there. He turned his gaze back on the strangers, standing still for a moment before he lashed out, grabbing Malachi's jaw with a force that would leave bruises later. "You would dare lie to my face, boy?" His movements were filled with barely restrained anger, and Mel knew he was close to loosing his temper. It was obvious now that Malachi was the weaker one of the group, and even more obvious that the girl cared for him. She had done nothing but argue and defend him the whole time. She knew Gray seen that, and knew he planned on using it to their advantage. |

Johanna sucked in a breath. Every inch of her wanted to scream and rage but even she knew now to shut up. She knew Mal was terrified but she locked eyes with him. She mouthed look at me. Your fine. Calm down. Just tell him. Malachi's expression hardened and he looked back at the man. "What reason do I have to lie to you? You could kill us at any minute, and I can't lie to save my life. Jo could tell you that." He managed a small smile at Johanna's mock anger at her name being said. "If you actually knew what my watch did, you would believe me." Malachi was gaining confidence with every word. "Now I'm not accusing you of lieing, because that is rude." He paused pointedly. "I'm just saying maybe you were bluffing just a tad so we fear or respect you more. Lieing is one of the most common power grabs." |

She couldn't help but be intrigued as she watched the interaction. Malachi looked terrified, but the girl managed to calm him down. So they trust each other. I'd even say there's a possibility of a romantic relationship between them. The brat was certainly well educated. He spoke like an entitled prince. Not to mention his way of speaking was highly uncommon. Most of the citizens of New York City's vocabulary consisted of slurs and a whole lot of abbreviations. Most don't make a point to state facts like they're the most obvious things in the world. The boy's words were cut off as Gray slapped him across the face, the sharp sound echoing in the small room. Even Mel's eyes widened. Gray had a temper, but normally he was a lot better about restraining it. The masked man's voice lowered to a growl as he looked at the girl-Jo. "You want your friend here to live? Then you'd better start answering my questions." |

HOW. DARE. HE. Johanna wasn't sure she could be angrier than she was right now. From their very brief interaction she had decided that this guy wouldn't hurt helpless people that couldn't fight back. She was livid. Johanna was so blind with fury that she couldn't see Malachi slumped over in his chair, fighting tears. If it was only her, she wouldn't utter another word. She would let them kill her, because she wouldn't stay dead. But Malachi. Malachi was her weakness. She cared about Malachi's smallest inconveniences more than her own wellbeing. She would slaughter nations for him. But now, locked in this chair, she could do nothing for him but what he already tried to do. Johanna hung her head like she was the one that had been hit, refusing to look him in the face. "Fine. I will tell you everything. My name is Johanna. We are from different worlds. Malachi is part of an organization that moniters the realms. They chose me to protect and bring justice to the worlds. He comes with me for protection to document the worlds and further The Order's records. Malachi is harmless and peaceful. He hates violence. Without me he might die. He has done nothing to deserve punishment. It was my idea to follow them and my idea to break in. Punish me and let him go. Run me through with my own sword. Just please. Let. Him. Go." |

There we go. They found her weakness. Johanna's statement baffled Mel. She knew Nev wore a similar expression beside her, and even Valentine looked taken aback, which was hard to do. So this girl either had a death wish, or she was clinically insane. There's no way she was telling the truth. Except Gray didn't look confused or livid, or even irritated. He looked intrigued. Gray finally released Malachi's face, the boy's eyes filled with barely restrained tears, "Other worlds? I suppose that would explain your seeming lack of knowledge of how things work around here. And your brashness, but that could also just be genetics." his tone was almost teasing. What was wrong with him? Johanna defiently broke him. Mel had known Gray for nearly two years, and in those two years, she had never heard him crack a joke. Ever. Gray continued before Johanna could respond, "Despite your...moving display of affection for this boy, niether of you will be escaping punishment. You attempted to infiltrate one of the most secure rebel bases in all of New York, and that will not go without consequences. I believe I can find uses for both of you. Both of you seem highly intelligent, despite your...odd mannerisms." Gray turned to Valentine, silently asking for permission to speak. Valentine nodded and Gray spoke again, his voice gruff as he explained his idea, "The brat seems to know her way around a weapon, and I have a feeling our friend Raz would find a talented partner in the dictionary," he tossed his head toward Malachi, "I propose that we keep them both here. They will work under Sergeant Rutherford's unit, helping as we see fit. They won't be allowed out of the base under any circumstances, and won't be allowed their weapons, but they will be able to wander freely as they please throughout the base." Gray glanced between the two and Valentine. Mel couldn't quite believe what she was hearing. He wanted to keep them here? Wanted them to work in her unit? She knew everything Gray did had a prupose, but she couldn't quite find one this time. There had to be something she wasn't seeing. Valentine was quiet for a moment as he contemplated Gray's offer. "I can see how that would benefit us." Valentine paused and looked in Mel and Nev's direction, "Release them and take them to a room to get settled. Don't allow them out until I give the order. Lieutenant, meet me in my office so we can discuss this further." |

The ringing in Malachi's ears finally dulled enough to hear the order. If he understood correctly, they were keeping him and Johanna prisoner by putting them to work with the people that hate them. Well great. Thanks Johanna for getting us captured and put to work for people who want us dead. Malachi gathered that they wanted to use Johanna's strength and fighting skills, and he was supposed to work with the person that took his gadgets. Hope she hasn't broke them. After the interrogator man left, the two they followed jumped on his orders. The girl left, probably to prepare rooms and left the guy to release them. Malachi heard him say a few things to Johanna, and he was smiling when he got over to Malachi. He didn't speak as he unlocked his bindings, just hummed a tune unfamiliar to Malachi. That's because you've never been here, idiot. Malachi sucked in a breath through his nose. We're on Earth. I should have told Johanna sooner. She's going to freak out. Finally, Malachi was free. He rubbed his wrists and noticed that Johanna's were red from flailing around. The girl came back in the room, apparently, unpleased. The boy just said two words. "Follow us." (Mmmm perspective switch) |

Mel forced her feet to move as Valentine and Gray left, begrudgingly walking down the hallway to the section of rooms for their unit. There was only one open, but there were already two single beds in the room. She ensured that everything was in order before making her way back to the interrogation room. When she arrived back, Nev had the two untied. The sight made her feel slightly uneasy, but the weight of her pistol at her hip comforted her. She didn't say anything, her face set in stony silence as Nev spoke, instructing the two to follow them. Nev's face was unreadable, which was rather unusual for him. Nev led the group, Malachi and Johanna in the middle and Mel at the back, ready to draw her weapon at the slightest hint of danger. They walked in silence until they reached the room, ushering them inside and closing the door behind them. Mel and Nev stood silently in front of the door, blocking the only exit. Nev finally spoke after a moment, his voice carefully devoid of emotion, "Welcome to the Black Rose Resistance." |
