Feo listened to Lucius's words, his gaze distant as he thought about the gods and the mess they often created. He couldn't help but agree—Loki and the others rarely treated their children with the respect they deserved. The gods seemed to see their offspring as nothing more than tools, pawns in their games.
-
"Yeah, you're right," Feo said, his voice low. "They never seem to care after the birth. It's like they toss us into the world and forget we exist until we become useful. Or a problem."
-
He let out a soft chuckle, shaking his head. "But you're right—diplomacy first. I like that. We're trying to make a difference, not just make a mess. Even if the gods are a lost cause most of the time." His expression softened slightly as he met Lucius's gaze. "I mean, we can't just start smashing everything if we want to leave something behind that actually works."
-
When Lucius mentioned violence again, Feo gave a faint nod. "Yeah, well, we'll cross that bridge when we get there, I guess." His tone was calm but there was a hardness behind it, an unspoken promise that he wouldn't hesitate if it came down to it.
-
As they walked along the tracks, Feo sniffed the air, chuckling slightly at Lucius’s comment. "Manure, huh? That’s a lovely thought to start the day," he said, a wry smile on his lips. "Guess you get used to it, though. I grew up in a city, so I’m not really familiar with farm life. Everything always usually smelled like fire, or money. Whatever rich people smell like, that's what Asgard smells like."
-
Lucius’s sudden question caught him off guard, though, and Feo’s smile faltered just slightly. The memories that followed were always a bit too bitter to fully savor.
-
"How did I end up at the college?" Feo repeated, his mind flashing back to those early days. "Loki," he said with a soft laugh, though it was bitter. "He thought it would be a good idea to throw me into some random college on Earth. Some kind of... field study, I guess. He wanted me to learn how demigods think, how their minds work, so I’d be more prepared if they came after him. So if he ever needed to... you know, deal with them, I’d know exactly how to take them down."
-
Feo paused for a moment, his smile tightening as he glanced at the tracks. "But honestly, I think the real reason he did it was just to get rid of me. He didn’t want me around—couldn’t risk me being a liability if things went south."
-
He snorted, shaking his head. "Funny thing is, he probably didn’t expect me to actually learn something useful while I was there. But hey, it worked out in the end, right?" His voice carried a hint of irony. "Well, I guess I learned a lot about demigods... and about how much I don't want to be part of that world."
-
Feo shrugged, pushing the thoughts aside. "Anyway, that’s why I’m at the college. Loki’s idea of 'education.'" He gave Lucius a sideways glance, his expression softening a little. "And you? What’s your story?"

In a city--but it was the city in particular that caught the attention of Lucius more than anything else. Asgard--that was the thing he spoke about. A small touch of awe burst through his chest. Feo had grown up in the Asgard--that was why he had some strange ideas, some strange concepts and--more importantly... the Asgardian coinage. But he had been around the actual gods, the creatures and beings that lived in Asgard. That was absolutely incredible. Something about that... was mind boggling.

He stopped in his tracks for a moment before he hurried to keep pace with Feo. "The Asgard--" he echoed quietly. "Holy cow."

Loki--Feo had stayed with Loki. That was how he had ended up in the college. Loki had kept in him in Asgard, but not well enough considering the bitter laugh. Field study.

To learn how demigods worked, how their minds worked and that sort of thing. But there he was, choosing Lucius of all of them to try and piece out. That was real smart. Lucius couldn't hardly figure his own self out sometimes.

Lucius glanced toward Feo for a moment, readying a jeering comment toward himself. But he kept talking instead. The smile Lucius wore faded slightly. If things went south--well, they were going south now. Well, they were headed west but for the gods? They were going south and the gods had no idea.

"See, the problem is, the demigods aren't inherently bad. Their world and all of that has been created because of the gods and what they push onto them," Lucius commented idly, "the issue is that there are good kids in the demigod world. But that goodness gets pushed out and to the side when they reach a useful age because the gods suddenly remember they exist and now, they have children clamoring over each other to try and get the attention of their parent. Where the parent and the gods are basically looking out for who survives the free for all."

The young man pushed one hand through his hair. "Ha--you sure picked a weird one to study, eh?" The comment finally slid out after a few moments of silence. "But granted, I didn't start at that college. I went to one farther from home--on purpose. I wanted to try and start fresh, start new. Which, it worked out for a little bit. But I... I opened my mouth and got in trouble. I mentioned that maybe the gods were wrong for how they treated others and... boy howdy that was the wrong thing to say. I finally convinced them to let me transfer to the other campus which was closer to home and 'better influences' or something and they let it happen. I had a scholarship that transferred as well since I'm in kind of a niche but needed career path."

Lucius let out a weary sigh. "... and then the factions and all of that happened... and it just kind of solidified that idea that the gods really suck at parenting and they need to be held accountable for it," he tapped one hand against his thigh, a weary note to his smile. "... which is why I'm out here. I would've done it anyways."

He could only imagine what Milo was thinking. A smug part of him was confident that he had done this part. He had escaped campus, gotten out, gotten this far and they had a plan. That was more than anyone else had done.

And it was more than just putting his head down and suffering through.

"That's kind of the beauty of confidence," Lucius gave Feo a much brighter and far more sly smile, "nobody questions you because you look like you know what you're doing. Even when you ask question!"

Lucius shared his story, and Feo absorbed every word, nodding along as he spoke. He could understand the frustration that came with being around gods who treated their children like afterthoughts, only to pull them back when they were useful. It was a strange and twisted game, one that Feo had come to recognize all too well. But Lucius’s perspective, his frustrations with the gods’ lack of accountability—it was something Feo felt deep in his bones. He wasn’t alone in his anger and sense of betrayal.
-
“Yeah, the gods sure have a unique way of ‘parenting,’” Feo said with a sarcastic chuckle. “Makes you wonder if they actually care about their kids at all, or if we’re just... chess pieces in their games.” He shook his head, the bitterness still in his voice. “It’s like they expect us to be grateful for the scraps they throw at us while they play their godly games, totally ignoring the chaos they create.”
-
Feo’s eyes softened slightly as he glanced at Lucius. He could see the weight in the young man’s words, the way he had been treated because of his outspoken nature. Feo couldn’t imagine trying to speak out against the gods, but it was clear that Lucius had the courage to do so. It wasn’t easy, especially when the gods had such power over their lives, but that’s what made Lucius’s story all the more impressive. He wasn’t just following the rules; he was challenging them, trying to make a difference.
-
It was starting to grow on him.
-
“Sounds like we both ended up in the same place for similar reasons, huh?” Feo said, his voice lighter now. “Though, I guess you had a bit more of a... rebellious streak in you. I respect that.”
-
When Lucius mentioned confidence, Feo raised an eyebrow, giving him a small grin. “You’re not wrong. Confidence is half the battle, even when you’re winging it,” he said, a teasing glint in his eyes. “But I think you’ve got more going for you than just confidence. There’s brains behind that smirk of yours.”
-
Feo’s smile grew a little, feeling a sense of camaraderie with Lucius, something he hadn’t realized he’d been missing until now. The two of them were in this together—trying to take on a system that had failed them, trying to make things right in a world where the gods and their games had left them both in the dust.
-
As they walked along the tracks, Feo glanced over at Lucius again, a small, thoughtful expression on his face. “I know we’ve got a plan, but... do you think it’ll work? I mean, we’ve got the right idea, but I don’t know if I’m as sure about it as I want to be.”
-
The question hung in the air for a moment. Feo knew there were no guarantees in this life, especially when it came to the gods. But he had to wonder—could they really pull this off? Could they get away with stealing the Cestus and force the gods to answer for their actions?
-
Feo’s thoughts drifted back to Loki and the way he had been treated. It wasn’t much of a stretch to imagine that the gods would see any challenge to their authority as a threat. And threats? Well, they didn’t tend to end well.
-
Still, there was a spark of hope in Feo’s chest, a sense that maybe, just maybe, this time they could do something that mattered. It wasn’t a certainty, but it was a chance. And for the first time in a long while, he felt like he was on the right path.
-
“If it doesn't... well,” Feo added, his voice quieter now, “at least we tried. And we’ve got each other’s backs?”
-
There was a small but firm sense of resolve in Feo’s words. He wasn’t alone in this anymore. Lucius wasn’t just some ally or acquaintance. They were in this together—come what may. Or, at least, that's what it seemed like to Feo. Or the small, optimistic part of his brain, hoping it was so.

Feo knew--he understood what Lucius was getting at in a way that others didn't. They'd hum and haw but then they'd settle in and just state that ... that was how the world was. They just had to get in and win the system to get better. But that was exactly what the gods wanted them to do.

"Oh they absolutely don't," Lucius let out a dry laugh and shook his head. Gods caring about their children? Yeah right. Well, okay, so there were a few who kind of ish did and that was rare. Usually it was because that was literally what they were the deity of. Families, children or whatever else.

Lucius gave Feo a warmer smile though he felt a small burst of heat ripple up into his cheeks. "W-well, I mean, y'know, you could say it like that, I guess," he stammered. Lucius really didn't think of himself as rebellious but now that the word was out there, he supposed it fit. He always considered it more of going his own pathway, rebellion was a dangerous word to throw around. But it... was rather fitting now. Which was fine.

Weird. But fine.

His eyes flicked up toward him with a sharper grin. Oh he was almost always winging it--just now they were hidden. Brains? Sure. Sure, that's what they were.

Lucius wasn't sure he believed him at all.

"I think it's going to get us on the right path to finding out what will work," Lucius commented, tucking his hands behind his back as he followed the train tracks. "If the initial plan does work, then fantastic. If it doesn't and we have to adjust it as we go, that's alright too. It's the duality of man against the rigidity of the gods. Duality does far more than rigidity does. But either way, if it doesn't work quite the way we want it, we do still have each other. That's something--perhaps that's more than enough. But hey, why go back to that place when we can explore the world?"

Lucius waved his hand to gesture around them. "All of... this, the ... Kansas."

There wasn't much to see in all reality. There were fields... a lot of fields and the train tracks. The town was largely behind them now and it was just the train tracks and the open fields. Some distant farm houses but nothing much more than that.

"For a godly item as powerful as the Cestus, you'd think it would've ended up somewhere cool like ... I dunno, Greece? Maybe Rome? Or even New York. But Kansas?"

Lucius shook his head and sighed. "That's like losing a penny in the couch cushion. There's nothing there but lint and fuzzies. Maybe some other coins you dropped."

Feo couldn’t help but chuckle at Lucius’s words, a small, genuine laugh escaping him as he walked beside the young man. “Yeah, Kansas isn’t exactly the first place I’d expect to find a godly artifact either,” he agreed, giving the vast open fields a long, thoughtful glance. “But then again, the gods are notorious for hiding things where no one would look. Maybe they thought it’d be safer here, away from the big cities and eyes that never stop watching. If they hid it here, of course. Or maybe Narcissus dropped it in the ocean trying to smack his reflection, and then Kansas dried up and this old dude found it."
-
He shrugged, a wry smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. He gave a playful side glance toward Lucius. “A godly item in the middle of nowhere. What are the odds?”
-
The dry, barren land of Kansas stretched out before them, the only movement being the occasional rustle of wind through the tall grasses. It was a stark contrast to the places Feo had known, places of grand architecture and mythical history—places like Asgard, where the air was charged with magic and the land itself seemed alive with stories. Here, it was quiet. Peaceful, even. But empty in a way that felt a little too fitting for the artifact they were searching for.
-
Feo let his gaze wander back to Lucius, who seemed to be processing all of this in his usual way—sharp wit with a hint of something deeper under the surface. They weren’t just after an artifact. They were after something that could help challenge the gods. Something that could give them a fighting chance against the very powers that had been toying with them all their lives.
-
“Still, it’s not the place that matters, right?” Feo said, his voice soft but sure. “It’s the reason we’re here. What we’re going to do with this. That’s what’ll make the difference.”
-
He fell into step with Lucius again, their movements in sync, the sound of their shoes tapping lightly against the tracks filling the air. "You ever think about what you want out of all this, Lucius? Not just the fight or the rebellion, but... after? What’s the endgame for you, when all this is over?" Feo asked, his curiosity piqued. He had an inkling of what Lucius might say, but it wasn’t often that people thought about the future beyond the battle. He was interested to see how the young man saw things.
-
Feo didn’t have a solid answer for himself. He knew the endgame was supposed to be something like reclaiming his own life, finding some way to step out from under the shadow of Loki, but beyond that... what did freedom even look like? What would it feel like to stand in a world without the gods breathing down his neck? That was something he hadn’t let himself dream about in a long time.
-
Yikes. Breathing down his neck? Don't think about that, now.
-
Ugh. And he could already feel his tired form flickering at the edges.

"In the middle of nowhere," Lucius echoed and let out a chuff of a laugh. "Well, y'know.... it would be the last place I would look. So that's gotta be part of it, I'm sure. But then again, the fact that some guy just magically happens to have a mythical stash of relics for a personal collection? That seems really suspicious to me. It's almost like it's that guy who doesn't want to be found... because he knows what he has. Who knows, maybe we can get this guy on our side too."

He shrugged loosely as he waved one hand. "The more the merrier--but he's not getting special treatment, no no," the young man let out a warmer laugh, giving Feo a sharper and teasing smile, "that's for you and you alone."

He fell silent for a few moments as he walked along the Nordic demigod. At the very least, the weather was nice. It wasn't too warm but it wasn't too terribly cold either. Lucius could get fairly cold fairly quick. But this weather was nice. The patchy clouds overhead provided some semblance of shade occasionally from the heat of the sun.

"Exactly, the reason is better than the journey," the winged demigod of Zephyrus bobbed his head firmly, bouncing golden hair. His eyes flicked back toward Feo for a moment or two. Had he thought about it?

... well, he had. But he knew full well that it was not the type of answer that Feo was going to ever accept. In all reality, Lucius had envisioned the whole thing going down in flames of glory, showing demigods that they could be more but knowing full well the gods would end the treason. He'd figure he'd watch the rest from the world beyond. But now... perhaps fortunately, that plan was slowly starting to change.

"Probably go back," Lucius finally said, letting the plan come as he spoke. "Find demigods who need a place to stay and probably take the campus over, giving them a better place to stay. That way I'm still close enough to the gods and I can see when they're going back on their promise."

He glanced toward Feo for a moment, almost to gauge whether or not that was a good answer. He had a feeling, a tiny inkling, that it was much better than his previous one. But that was an inside thought and that thought would remain as such.

But it had been the inevitable end. Lucius had always known, somehow, that whatever he did... it was always going to end abruptly. That was part of his nightmares, the looming vision of staring up at golden eyes and having it all go dark. The inevitable.

The voice always whispered that he should keep going, topple the gods... but be aware of his inevitable end.

What if it changed?

Lucius glanced back at Feo. "I--I am open for suggestions though."

Feo listened carefully, his eyes fixed ahead but his focus fully on Lucius. The plan to reclaim the campus and turn it into a haven for demigods—somewhere safe, where they didn’t have to constantly watch their backs or prove their worth to gods who barely cared—was... admirable. Noble, even. But Feo could sense the hesitation in Lucius's voice, the slight falter that spoke of deeper thoughts left unspoken. It wasn’t hard to guess what might have been on his mind; Feo had wrestled with similar fears and doubts for most of his life.
-
“Taking the campus back and turning it into something better?” Feo said, his voice thoughtful. “That’s a damn good plan. Honestly, it’s better than most demigods I’ve met who just want revenge or to carve out their own little corner of chaos. You’d actually be helping people, giving them something they’ve never had before: a place to belong.”
-
He paused, glancing sideways at Lucius. "But... I don’t think that should be the *end* of it. You’ve got too much fire in you to just stay put and watch the gods from a distance. The world’s a big place, and if this whole rebellion actually works—if we manage to shake things up—then maybe the future could be bigger than just one campus, y’know? Maybe you could be the one to set the example for everyone else.”
-
Feo's words hung in the air for a moment, carried along by the gentle breeze. He knew what Lucius was doing—planning for a realistic, achievable future while keeping himself grounded in the here and now. But something about the way Lucius had phrased his openness for suggestions made Feo wonder if there was a part of him that didn’t fully believe he’d see this plan through. Like he was expecting something—or someone—to cut him down before it could happen.
-
“Suggestions, huh?” Feo gave him a teasing grin, though his tone carried a note of sincerity. “Alright, how about this? Don’t sell yourself short. You’re not just some guy with a good idea—you’re *the* guy who’s out here actually doing something about it. That takes guts. And yeah, maybe things go sideways, maybe the gods try to shut us down, but you’ve already gotten further than anyone else has. If they haven’t stopped you by now, what makes you think they’ll be able to later?”
-
Feo shrugged, his expression softening. “All I’m saying is... don’t close the door on what could be. You’ve got options, Lucius. And you’ve got people who’ve got your back. That’s more than most demigods ever get.”
-
The wind picked up slightly, tugging at their clothes as Feo glanced ahead. The sound of a distant moo echoed faintly across the fields, which caused him to scan his eyes around, wondering how the hell he could hear a cow if he couldn't see one. Feo’s grin returned, more playful this time. “Anyway, I’m always open to sticking around and helping out with your plans. Someone’s gotta make sure you don’t get too full of yourself.”

Lucius hadn't really thought through the whole plan. He had vague thoughts for what could happen beyond facing the gods themselves but nothing too solid. Partially because he knew--he just knew--that he wasn't going to be making it much farther than that.

But there was a dangerous thought that popped into his head as Feo spoke. Bigger than just one campus... Feo probably meant more than one but Lucius felt a small skip in his chest.

Bigger than one campus... the thought was only aided by his teasing grin.

How else to keep the gods in check... but by ruling them himself?

Lucius took in a deeper breath and let it out again. Now that was a particularly stupid idea but it was the type of stupid that just might work. It would require gathering some friends and perhaps a few other gods to help along but... it could work. Especially since the gods could choose one thing to focus on. Him or the war.

But he couldn't reveal that plan yet. No, it still needed some planning.

Lucius gave Feo a lopsided smile, bumping against his side. "Y'know, you're the only one who's really egged me on like this. Everybody else says not to--or that I'm crazy. You get so used to that sort of thing that when someone tells you ... to do it, it seems so wild."

Feo's grin returned and Lucius gave him a brighter grin in return, preening just a touch. "Well, now, I think it's a little too late for that. I think I am all that and a box of rocks."

The young man let out a loose laugh, shaking his head for a few moments. The wind picked up just slightly, catching his hair and the edges of his clothing. Somewhere, in the distance he could hear a faint moo of a cow, likely carried on the wind.

But he was listening for the sound of thundering engines rumbling on the distant tracks. The puff of the engine, the whistle--even the way the ground shook when it was near.

But the air was silent barring the sound of the wind and their own footsteps along wooden rails.

There was a slight temptation to take the watch off. But Lucius wasn't sure how his wings would react with the new tunic and he did not want to tear it to pieces on accident. That would be bad--really bad.

Lucius paused for a moment or two, waiting. There was something that was ruffling his feathers--the feeling of something watching them from a distance. But he couldn't quite tell what yet. He lifted his hand up, urging Feo to stop as well.

"Something is out there," he whispered, "can you feel that? That feeling of something mythical--like us--something is out there. I don't know what or who or where."

The young man shook his head, turning in a slow circle before he paused and took a few seconds to blink.

He had... to take a moment to really register what he was seeing. He knew centaurs were a thing, he had seen them before.

...

But this one had the body of... a cow and a really frizzy dark mane of hair that floated around their head like a cloud.

Feo chuckled quietly, shaking his head, a familiar mix of exasperation and amusement tugging at his features. "Lucius, you are crazy. And this whole plan? It’s absolutely stupid. Like, monumentally, profoundly, unquestionably stupid." His voice carried a sharp edge of sarcasm, though there was a warmth in his tone that softened the words. He paused for a beat, his lips curving into a small, almost reluctant smile. "But... we’re doing it anyway. Because, apparently, that’s the kind of idiots we are."
-
As Lucius raised his hand, signaling for him to stop, Feo's stride slowed. His brow furrowed as he glanced at the other demigod, catching the slight shift in his posture. Lucius’s expression had changed—sharpened into something alert, something wary. Feo tilted his head, his confusion evident.
-
“What? Are your bird-senses tingling or something?” he quipped, his attempt at humor falling flat in the heavy quiet that hung between them. Feo’s gaze darted around the open fields, his instincts now on edge as he strained to see what had caught Lucius's attention.
-
Then he saw it.
-
At first, his brain struggled to process what he was looking at. Fro had never seen a centaur, but he'd read about them, and this seemed close—or at least, it was shaped like it might be trying to be a centaur, but not quite making it into the horse category. Instead of the powerful, equine lower half he’d come to expect from mythological depictions, this creature’s body was that of a cow. Its dark, frizzy mane floated around its head like a storm cloud, the edges haloed faintly by the sunlight breaking through the patchy sky.
-
Feo froze, his breath catching as he took an instinctive half-step back. His hands shot down to his sides, searching for the familiar weight of his knives. But instead of cold steel, his fingers met only the empty air. A sharp pang of realization hit him. His tunic—the one where his knives were safely tucked between the inner and outer layers—wasn't on him. It was on Lucius.
-
The thought sent a jolt of frustration through him, but he swallowed it down. Now wasn’t the time for that. Feo shifted closer to Lucius, his movements cautious but deliberate, placing himself within arm’s reach of the other demigod. His shoulders squared, his posture subtly protective.
-
“What the fuck…?” he muttered under his breath, his voice low and laced with disbelief. His dark eyes flicked between the creature and the surrounding fields, scanning for any signs of movement or other surprises lurking nearby.
-
He leaned slightly toward Lucius, his tone pitched low enough for only him to hear. “Is this a Kansas thing? Did we miss some kind of folklore memo? Because I’m pretty damn sure I’d remember hearing about... this.
-
Feo frowned, his unease growing with each passing second. His mind churned with possibilities—was it hostile? Friendly? Was it even real? He glanced at Lucius briefly, noting the same wary tension in his companion.
-
“Well,” Feo murmured dryly, his hand brushing lightly against Lucius’s arm, “if you were hoping for adventure, congrats. You’ve officially outdone yourself.”

Lucius grinned back lightly. He was impossible and stupid. Two things that clearly should never have mixed but there he was tangled up in both.

Aside from... whatever this was.

Lucius still couldn't quite figure out what he was seeing--or if it was real. This was one funky sort of mirage otherwise. It was stopped on the other side of the tracks, watching them with some sort of confusion. He was also not prepared for the deep voice that came from the being.

The rumble of a low voice but the tone was far more confused, if not concerned. The being's accent was thick and clearly rural--not quite southern but definitely mid-western.

The being's head tilted to the side, watching the pair.

"What're a pair of young men doin' out here? I'd know if I'd seen you in town but I ain't seen the lot of you before," the grumble was more confused than anything else, "an' judging by those looks, you both can see me for me."

Lucius looked back toward Feo, his eyes flickering with some sort of confusion before he took in a breath and let it out again. "Uhm--yeah, hello..." what exactly did he say to this?

Confidence right?

Lucius shook his head lightly and pushed one hand through his hair. "Well, I've never met someone like you before. But we're on our way to Garden City--"

"Ahh, itching to take a look at the private collection then. I figure so, dressed like that and whatnot," the beast ambled forward, making his way across the tracks. It wasn't that Lucius inferred it from the voice or appearance but he had ... well, he would keep his eyes upward from then on.

The cow-taur, not that Lucius knew if they had a name or not... Minotaur was already taken... smelled like grass. Mostly like grass. His skin was a darker color, almost a warm chocolate brown, his eyes were a deep hazel. The cow-half was just a soft brown. Nothing out of the ordinary.

But good grief was this thing massive up close. Lucius had to take a step back just to keep some semblance of safety.

"Well, we're waiting for the train," Lucius admitted. "Figured we'd get as far as we could before anything else--"

"Bah, the train isn't coming for another hour or so. These are my fields anyways, let me walk you down for a bit," the beast urged, waving one hand as he gestured for the pair to follow after him as he ambled down the length of the tracks. "Names Atlas, by the way."

Lucius looked toward Feo with a loose shrug. "At least he's nice?" He said quietly, keeping his voice low, "I'm not gonna ask questions, I'm just gonna go with it."
