This thread is for a private dragon-rider RP between Angrboda and myself; unless you are one of us, please refrain from posting. You are more than welcome - encouraged, even - to follow along!

–––––––––––––––––––––––––

World

The lands of Audura have long been home to species of varying taste; humans reside alongside Elves, Fae, and Merfolk, while deferring to the larger, more "wild" species: The dragons, which respect the humans and allowed a companionship between the two species to form.

If myth is to be believed, Fenrir, the giant wolf of legend, is believed to despise the dragons for their bond with the humans; his betrayal left him wounded, and he seeks to destroy everything the Gods created. For the dragons to disregard his pain, his humiliation, was to place themselves on the opposite side of a war they were unaware was being fought.

Our story begins on the voyage to the Dragon Isles. To become worthy of bonding a dragon, the humans must first prove they are resilient enough to find them. Unbeknownst to our protagonists, however, the war is coming far quicker than the dragons have anticipated. Audura is under seige, and there are only a few dragons with the strength to lead the fight against Fenrir.

Dragon Species:

Frilled Terror

Most common species; as the name suggests, these dragons are frilled - similar to a dilophasaurus. Venemous teeth, like that of a rattle snake, with a thorny tail containing the same venom. Dangerous when threatened.

Spiny Waterhorn

A water-dwelling species, the Spiny Waterhorn is able to fly for short distances but requires a nearby watersource to rehydrate frequently. Not commonly bonded. Powerful tails project these creatures through the water, and their dagger-like talons latch onto nearly anything within range. Dangerous when approached.

Royal Hookwing

With the largest wingspan of any breed, the Royal Hookwing is a fearsome sight. These creatures have no front legs, which classifies them as Wyvern by definition. Razor sharp spikes line the wings, back, and tail of this creature. Often amicable when approached - do not approach from left side.

Acid Dayfang

As the title suggests, this breed of dragon can spit acid. Similar to the makeup of the venom above, this creature has one interesting quality; there is no cure for the venom. Often seen during the daytime sunbathing, these dragons are easy to approach with the right incentive - without a gift, dangerous to approach.

Bonetailed Swimmer

This dragon was originally named a Swimmer when it was first found in a lake underneath a mountain; however, these dragons do not often swim, as their tails are plated and bone-like, not ideal for propelling in the water. Plated tail is capable of breaking dragon bones; these are the most silent breed of dragon, and often sneak up on humans before they are found. Dangerous in the dark prior to bonding.

Nightblast

The nighblast is a dwindling species, and does not often bond. Very reclusive, their strengths are unknown. Not likely to bond; do not approach.

Frostbolt

The frostbolt prefers frigid temperatures, and has been seen weilding ice breath in previous documentations. Early expiditions failed to report any more without risk of hypothermia. These dragons rarely bond, and rarely leave the cold. Not likely to bond; do not approach.

Blue Ravager

A shocking shade of blue, the Ravager is known for its vicious personality. Has been documented killing potential riders. Not often seen. Not likely to bond; do not approach.

Maelstrom

The Maelstrom has been spotted few times in history, with electrically charged power following nearby. Often seen in tandem with the Ravager. Rarely bond to humans. Not likely to bond; do not approach.

Chara Gunndöttir

Age: 23

Gender: Female

Nicknames: Char

Appearance:

Chara is a fair skinned female, standing at 65 inches tall. Blonde hair falls to her midwaist, and is adorned with various braids - notably, the braided crown atop her head. Piercing green eyes are offset by blonde lashes and a smattering of dark freckles across her nose and cheeks. With high cheekbones and an angular face only contrasted by the soft curve of her lips, Chara is the reincarnation of her father.

Although the style for women in the village is dressy, Chara prefers to wear her leathers around, as they provide more movement and are generally more comfortable. A relatively unassuming dragon pendant hangs around her neck at all times - a gift from her mother.

Tattoos: A band around her left wrist. Solid black, approximately half an inch thick. Many runic symbols dot her skin, with a large tattoo of Jörmungandr curling around her right thigh and trailing below her knee.

Personality:

| Resilient | Ambitious | Intelligent | Resourceful | Independent |

Chara has always been independent, in every sense of the word. From making her own weapons to cooking her own food, she allows nobody room to take care of her. Getting close to people ends in heartache, and she's had enough. To cope with this, she does everything alone. She planned to find her dragon alone, but it seems fate had other ideas for her.

Because she has always taken care of herself, Chara became rather resourceful. Weapons can be crafted from anything, and they only need to last long enough to hunt - or defend herself, lest she become the victim of an unsavory dragon. Her father taught her all she knows, and she prides herself on the intelligence he has bestowed upon her.

Rúna Brunsdöttir
–––––––––––––––––––––––––
Age: 23
Gender: Female
Nicknames:
–––––––––––––––––––––––––
Appearance:
Rúna's fair skin contrasts greatly with her long, dark brown hair. In the sunlight, shades of red can be seen amongst the loose curls. When worn down, her wavy locks settle just beneath her shoulder-blades- however, she often keeps her hair in a single braid. Her eyes are an icy grey-blue, framed by long, dark lashes. She has a heart-shaped face with a sharp jawline and high cheekbones.
She often wears modified dresses that she sews herself- for comfort and mobility, while still maintaining the traditional style that is expected of her position (apprentice of her mother, the village Völva- mouthpiece of the gods)
Tattoos: Her arms, legs, and back are practically covered in tattoos: various runic texts, creatures of legend, depictions of gods and/or their symbols. A tattoo of Yggdrasil takes up the majority of her back, the trunk is centered on her spine.
–––––––––––––––––––––––––
Personality:
| Reserved | Compassionate | Spiritual | Quick-Witted | Determined | Stubborn |
Rúna carries her father's warrior spirit, as well as her mother's supernatural gifts. She can be stubborn, though has learned the value of patience- even if there are some people who are quick to drain it from her.
While she may have the respect of her fellow villagers, she is quick to step in and defend others if they are being disrespected or treated poorly. Oftentimes, the perpetrators drop the issue and apologize- at least, for performing their actions in front of her. No one wishes to anger the Völva or her apprentice, for fear of being cursed.
She, as a Völva in training, is very in-tune with nature and loves interacting with all sorts of creatures.

Chara stood portside, left hand held over the edge of the skúta to trace the veins of water flowing underneath. Rays of sunlight caught in the spray, shadowing her in a prismatic display of color as they neared the Dragon Isles. With her right hand drawn to shield her eyes, she grinned as the ethereal land drew near. Even from the distance, dragons were visible above the treetops, soaring through the sky. Her heart leapt with anticipation; it was finally time to find whether she was worthy of bonding with one of the mightly beasts.

Among the crew were various other hopeful riders, most of which were nervously pacing the deck as they stared at the approaching Isles. Once the skúta had left them, there were only two outcomes possible: Bond with a dragon and return home, or face the wrath of the Isles as a foreign species. Statistically, sixty-seven percent of their convoy would bond before nightfall. Thirty-three percent would more than likely not return. With a thirty-seven member group, the odds were in none of their favor.

Rúna sat at the back of the longship, nearly a dozen of her fellow travelers seeming to have gathered loosely near her, waiting, watching. Her lips moved in an- almost- silent prayer, her chant audible only to the young man in front of her as she painted symbols of protection on his face, as she had done to her own. With a final swipe of her brush, she set it down along with her bowl and took his face in her hands. Her piercing eyes stared into his, both of which were now bordered by the black paint to direct the sun's light away from their vision, "May Thor grant you his strength, and may Oðin grant you his wisdom," she said with finality, releasing him.
.
The man, Ragni, bowed his head, "Thank you," he said, before standing and taking his leave. While she knew that the blessings weren't always guaranteed, Rúna knew that her people found comfort in doing what they could to ensure their safety and success- especially on this very trip. It was on this journey that they would prove themselves, and the burden of such a task weighed heavy on the ship. The weight of her own was heavier still, for if she were to fail, then it would effect everyone in their village.
.
She surveyed the sky, a small smile gracing her lips as she watched the dragons in flight. Her gaze traveled downward, noting that the shoreline was growing closer.
.
She was not the only one who noticed.
.
"Alright, you mangy fledglings!" a booming voice bellowed from the stern, "We're here. You've made it this far, but the Seas were easy on you lot. The dragons won't be so nice, and neither will I- now get moving before you crash my ship!"
.
Their overseer, Dag, had always been more of a "tough-love" sort of character, even back in the village.

With a jolt, Chara realized Dag expected them to swim to the Isles. Nobody had warned her of that small slight. She sent up a prayer to Oðin that no Waterhorns lurked in the short distance, before hurtling herself over the edge and swimming.

She had been one of the first overboard, and heard faint splashes behind her as her companions followed suit. With a gently but firm backstroke, she made her way towards the Isles, sure to never look below her in the water until she felt the stirring of sand. Righting herself, she stood to face the Isles, the color quickly draining from her face. "Oh, Gods," she whispered, eyes frantically scanning the beach.

Peeking out of the foliage were tens of dragon eyes, watching the oncoming group as they reached the shore. Chara was rooted to the spot in awe - perhaps fear - until a scream rang out behind her. Whirling around, she only saw the thrashing tail of a Waterhorn as it dove beneath the surface again. Somebody had not survived the swim.

Her fingers shook slightly, and she balled her fists to prevent the action from being visible to the creatures that waited. Weakness was never taken lightly by the dragons. With a huff of determination, Chara took her first steps onto dry sand before she broke into a light jog towards the forest. It never bode well to stay near the group - if another was deemed unworthy, the dragons didn't particularly care who they charred in an effort to erradicate the weak link.

-

The dense tropical leaves brushed her skin gently, seeming to warn her of her path as Chara continued to push forward. She did not belong on the Dragon Isles, and the Goddess Jord seemed to know it. Still, Chara continued, pushing through the leaves until she found a fallen branch. Grabbing it, she searched until she found a sharp enough rock and sat to begin whittling the branch into a point. Although she would never harm the dragons, other beasts lurked in this forest, and she would prefer not to face them empty handed.

Slinging her rucksack off of her should, she rooted through it until her waterskin was in her hand, before greedily draining a quarter of it. The humid climate and dense forest had caused her to break out in a rather thick sweat. Gently placing the waterskin back in her pack, she threw it over her shoulder once more before rising, makeshift spear in hand.

Rúna quickly stowed away her paint and brush in the small lockbox she had brought aboard; she would be leaving it behind. Anything that couldn't fit in her satchel would simply slow her down, and being slow was something that she simply couldn't afford. She made sure that her bag was tightly closed, and that her steel, three-foot seiðstafr was securely attached to her belt before she, too, made the dive.
.
She kept to the middle of the pack as everyone jumped overboard, hoping that the chaos would conceal her from the water dragons that waited for them below the surface. A scream ripped through the air as her head broke the surface, but she didn't have time to hesitate. Rú could feel the water churning beneath her as she swam towards the shore, and she felt the ripple of a massive beast swimming past her- missing her by only a few yards. The dragon's current propelled her forward just enough to make it to the shallows. As soon as her fingers brushed the sand, she dug her feet into the coarse mud and sprang into a sprint, practically launching from the water.
.
Her grey eyes scanned the treeline ahead of her, and made a sharp right turn once she saw the dragons beginning to emerge from the trees. The beach was about to turn into a massacre, and she didn't want to stick around and watch her friends be slaughtered. Perhaps most of them would be smart enough to run into the jungle, where the dragons couldn't move as swiftly.
.
Her legs ached with every step as she wove through the dense foliage, leaves and the occasional thorn raked across her bare arms and the exposed skin of her legs where the slits in the skirt of her emerald green dress were.
.
It was nearly two miles of running before Rú finally slowed to a stop in a dense thicket of trees and vines. Her lungs were burning, and it seemed as though her heart were beating out of her chest. She took a moment to catch her breath and scan at her surroundings before reaching into her soaked satchel, pulling out her waterskin. She knew it would be best to conserve it until she found a freshwater source, but her thirst seemed to get the better of her. Rú stopped herself when the bladder was nearly half empty, capping it and returning it to her satchel before she could do anymore damage to its supply.
.
She meandered around for a while, seiðstafr in hand, searching for a safe place to lay low and careful to keep her pace slow and deliberate. In the color of her slowly drying dress, she almost appeared like a giant leaf moving through the trees.

As Chara continued to wander, her ears perked to the faintest rustling noises in the distance. Too light to be a dragon, she feared one of the varying creatures of the forest had found her scent. Determination laced her fear as she twisted towards the sound and began to creep closer.

She saw nothing at first, and was sure she was losing her mind but - there, to her left, the leaves moved in an abnormal pattern. When she squinted, Chara could make out the faint trace of skin before it all clicked into place: this was another human, camoflauged to protect herself. Chara grinned, wishing she had thought that far ahead; camoflauge would benefit her in multiple ways until she was bonded to a dragon.

Shaking her head, she huffed a quiet laugh before turning around. She stepped away from the girl until she could barely make out the near-silent noise of her footfalls before following a parallel path to the girl. Although she did not want to approach her and risk getting singed by an angry dragon, Chara had a piqued interest in the intelligence of the female now to her left. She pushed slightly further away, keeping to her own area to prevent the girl from finding her before she began to truly take in the sounds, sights, and scents of the forest around her.

The sun was still high, but had begun to cross its peak and would soon descend below the mountains. Chara shuddered to believe she would be stuck here for that long, with only a mere stick to defend herself; though her father had told her true bravery lie in carrying only yourself as a weapon, she had quickly come to wish for her bow's conforting weight against her back. Removing herself from the fear-laden trail of thought, she continued her observations. Faint rustling could be heard all around, mostly due to the slight breeze, but she was not stupid enough to think no creatures prowled on her periphery.

With a deep inhale, Chara smelled the sickly-sweet tang of a long-stagnant water, and decided to veer off course to investigate. Her hope was that a dam had been built, and a running source lay not far away. Her thirst had been rapidly climbing, but she refused to empty her waterskin without knowing she could refill it.

Gently tracing a wildlife path, Chara made her way to the smell. She brushed her hand along the ferns that grew nearly to her shoulder, smiling at the twittering of birds above her. The canopy was dense in this sect, causing a dappled green light gently filter through; she was thankful, for the direct sun would surely scorch her skin.
