May The Dark Hide Us

The original bloodline of merfolk has been dead for so long, none of the descendants that are alive can quite recall ever seeing one in the flesh. They've heard stories, of course, the same way humans knew that they came from primates, the way the humans know who and what came before them.

Now, there are three species of merfolk that remain. The Myrleon, the Solean, and the Kothes.

The Myrleon had always been closest to the humans, they had always drifted along their shores, even stepped upon their beaches, often too afraid to leave the quiet sounds of the ocean completely behind while they hid their true identities.

The Solean had stayed among their reefs, skin and scales the colour of coral, dancing with fish and helping their homes grow. They'd stayed as invisible as they could to the all-seeing eyes of the humans while staying in their homes. They had been careful, they had been secretive, they had been fearful.

They hadn't done enough.

The humans found them, of course they had, and in their misunderstood fear, the fear of the unknown, the humans had begun the hunt. The Myrleon's and Solean's fled, diving down into the depths, fleeing to the territory of their distant cousins, the Kothes, only to be met with hostility and disdain.

With the sting of fatal rejection still hot on their skin, and the burn of the fearful anger of the humans, the Myrleon's and Solean's set up a camp near the Kothes home, hoping that, if the war did follow them, their cousins may jump to their aid regardless of what they'd said.

RP Rules

I. All of Eve's RP rules apply.

II. If you have questions, don't be afraid to PM me, or, if the discussion is open and you have an accepted character, feel free to ask there.

III. This RP is semi-literate, meaning I require full sentences with decent grammar. This means the limit for posting is 2 paragraphs minimum per post per character. I understand writers block, but everyone else needs something to respond to, and full sentences for appearance and personality.

IV. Be creative, have fun with your characters, this is all about having fun ^^

V. If you are fighting, give others a chance to respond. You will not land every hit and you will not dodge every attack, be realistic. Flip a coin if you have to.

VI. I recommend more than one character. Chances are, characters will get hurt, or possibly even die. This will not be a soft RP.

VII. Be active. Do not join just to ghost the RP. Minimum a post a week, or PM me with a viable reason as to why you can't do that.

VIII. No godmoding, powerplaying, no perfect characters, etc. None of that will be tolerated.

IX. I reserve the right to deny applications to the RP. Similarly, I have a "Three Strikes and You're Out" rule. If I have to ask you to correct your form three or more times, I have the right to deny your application.

X. Drama in the RP is encouraged, however, Out of Character (OOC) drama will not be tolerated. If you have an issue with someone else in the RP, PM me and let me know and I'll sort it out.

XI. Reservations last 48 hours.

XII. There is no character limit, but please don't take more than you can handle.

XIII. If you make a child, please give them a parent or guardian. I will be limiting how many children there are.

3. Do not leave the trench without proper reason [foraging, requests from superiors, hunting expeditions, or patrolling].
4. Report any sightings of a human, regardless of where they are.

Needed Universal Knowledge

Habitat
The Myrleon's lived close to the shore of a human-inhabited land, living among seagrass, animals and making little huts underground to rest in if they desired it.

The Solean's lived in a reef nearby, often having communication with their Myrleon cousins.

Now, the two of them live only a little ways away from the edges of a trench in the depths of the ocean, doing their best to get by and create a new life for themselves. Their camps are directly next to each other, and, while somewhat self-sustaining, their leaders are also working together. The area they're on is the "Abyssal Plain".

The Kothes live inside this trench, using pre-existing caves and caverns and making new ones. Every family/person has their own cave to live in that they can decorate how they see fit, and training and meetings etc. are held in caverns.

The beginning of this trench is a little higher than normal, at 5,000m, and it stretches all the day down to a depth of 10,000m. The Kothes live in the 6,000-7,000 area, space being taken up by large caverns for meetings, trainings, and other communal things, as well as homes large enough for families. If humans ever explore their trench, as humans are growing more and more curious about the ocean, there is a long tunnel at around 9,000m that the Kothes have dug out over time.

This tunnel is long and only big enough to fit two adult Kothes side-by-side, but ends in a large, dug-out cavern that's more than big enough for the whole clan, and it gets expanded as their population grows.

Language
The three merfolk have different languages, but also a common language between the three of them. (Please "Talk normally like this" when speaking the common tongue, but do something like "Bolding" the text or "Underlining" the text when talking their native tongue, or somehow specify what you're doing.)

The Myrleon language is gentle and soft sounding, kind on the ears, and those outside the language often feel as if they're being nice, even when they're not.

The Solean language is quick and flowy, each word seemingly perfectly paired with the next word to make a continuous sentence.

The Kothes language is brutal and harsh-sounding, filled with consonants. It makes them sound angry and aggressive, even when they aren't being so.

Every kind of merfolk also has animal-like sounds (hisses, growls, etc) at their disposal. Among the Myrleon, this is generally seen as only used in times of annoyance, or highly disrespectful. The Solean mainly use hisses, growling at the height of their anger. Meanwhile the Kothes are known for being animalistic, snarls coming to their tongues as easily as words.

Lifespan
Each species has their own lifespan, however, two things remain the same. For the first 20 years of their lives, they are growing until they stop aging, in which case they appear about 20 years old until they begin to deteriorate. For the last 20 years of their life, the merfolk take a very severe and quick downturn, the aging their bodies had stopped catching up to them all at once until they die.

The Myrleon live for about 200 years.

The Solean live for about 150 years.

The Kothes live for about 500 years.

Other Appearance Facts
Most merfolk have bioluminescent markings on their body. They are born with these markings, and although they may change a bit over time, they don't change completely. Some don't have them at all, others have lots of them.

Solean merfolk are the famous for having the brightest markings, and Kothes were thought by the other species to not have them for a while, until they found out their darker cousins simply cover them when leaving the trench.

All merfolk have the ability to dim them at will for periods of time, but they cannot remove the glow completely.

And yes, they do have gills, as they're breathing underwater.

Offspring
All merfolk have offspring. In this RP, they produce live young (like sharks do), and raise those young for however long they need. They can have the same amount of children that humans can, but the higher the number, the lesser the chance.

Merfolk can reproduce as soon as they stop aging, and can continue to until they die. However, in the last 20 years of their life, the birth runs a much higher risk of costing them their life.

Sub-Offspring - Crossbreeds

Crossbreeds between the species are rare due to all the complications involved, and the parents and child get cast out when crossbreeds occur. These complications may cause the female parent to die if the baby is larger than their own species, grow infertile, or for the baby to die or be infertile.
(Yes, I know these may not be realistic, but it would make sense for crossbreeds to have a chance of happening and this is meant to make it harder.)
For all crossbreed pairings, I will be rolling a dice/doing the random number gen. Make sure to message me about doing this stuff. Thanks guys.

Weapons + Humans
The merfolk don't have weapons like guns, harpoons, or anything like that. Most of their weapons are spears or spear-like objects, or their natural weapons for close combat (teeth and claws), however only Kothes have training specifically in battle, other tribes only have hunters.

The humans are modern humans, with, yes, a very real chance of following the merfolk if they find them and further endangering the Kothes.

Quick Guide: Ranks that are obviously only for one person (King, Queen, Chieftess, Chieftan, Sovereign, Consort and Crowned Heir) don't have an indicator of how many members are permitted there. I feel as if this is obvious. Other ranks, however, if they don't have an indicator of (1), (2), etc., it's safe to assume they're fairly unlimited until otherwise stated.

For The First Posts

It's been approximately two weeks since the Solean and Myrleon set up camp nearby the trench, leaving room for some nerves to settle, and others to grow more anxious that the humans may find them. The Solean and Myrleon may be struggling to settle into their new, darker and colder home, while the Kothes are primarily trying to carry on as if the newcomers aren't there.

It's around the beginning of the day, meaning that most are likely up and moving, and are either getting tasks asigned or are starting their tasks.

Please use some kind of heading when you post so we know who you're posting for [name, species, rank, etc], and other than that, this RP and open and you may now post!

Tethys
Female | Kothes | Sovereign | Mentions: None
Indirectly Mentions: The Clan, Solean & Myrleon

To say Tethys was annoyed would be a severe understatement. It would minimize the current of irritation, anger, the rage that burned through her blood, lighting it aflame beneath her skin, leaving her feeling prickly and frustrated. It would minimize, completely ignore, the tense movement of her muscles, the way her hand flexed every so often against her weapon, as if itching to plunge it into someone or something.

She'd never been particularly fond of their distant cousins. While she was understanding that they had all developed their own way of life, their own ways of surviving, the Sovereign found their tactics... lacking. Choosing to hide among the humans, and then coming to her and her people when it came back to bite them? She had felt no remorse or guilt for sending them away, and still felt none now, steadfast in her choices.

Her own people had to come first. This was not their fight. This was not their war. Innocent lives, the lives of her people, would not be lost in a battle they had no part in. Their only part in the fight was completely unwilling, being related distantly to the Solean and Myrleon.

Tethys had made sure everyone that left the trench had at least a warrior with them, including the hunting parties. They all had to be on much higher alert with the threat of humans more evident then they ever had been before, thanks to their brighter, unwilling neighbors. And even now, sat in the large cavern where she and her chosen members held meetings, the Sovereign found herself gripping her weapon, as if she would be forced to leap into battle at a moments notice.

She would have to talk to those in her council, have to make and forge plans for if the humans, no, when the humans found them, and how they should push the Solean and Myrleon further away. Her and her people could hide, they had ways to hide and had hidden before, and having targets on the horizon might lead the humans away from them and their home.

Kukulcan
Male || Kothes || Consort || Mentions: Tethys, Kallan

Kukulcan, an individual of typical composure, found himself succumbing to a wave of displeasure. The lines upon his forehead deepened, his brows furrowing as he fought against a growing annoyance within him. Even his body language reflected his escalating irritation, for his jaw was clenched and his fists were tightly balled. Fingers extended, he stretched them to their limits before, in a synchronized sequence, cracked each knuckle audibly. The sharp, distinct sound echoed in the surrounding space, showing evidence of his mounting frustration.

"I said no," he voiced, chin protruding outwards as a scowl twisted upon his lips. "But dad," Kallan, who lingered near his father, pleaded with clasped hands. "No." -- "C'mon, please?" -- "No." A muffled groan escaped the younger man, his eyes twitching as he suppressed the urge to roll them. "It's dangerous, not to mention irresponsible," continued, Kukulcan, who began lecturing his son. "With the arrival of the Solean and Myrleon comes the arrival of humans." As he continued, his gestures became animated, his hands illustrating the potential danger that could befall any of them if they left the safety of the trench.

"I know my way around the area enough. I won't run into any humans." A pause. "You're too paranoid." replied Kallan, crossing his arms. "Paranoid?" Kukulcan hissed, grabbing his son by the arm and pulling him closer. "Look at my scars, boy. You think that I'm paranoid over nothing?" Releasing Kallan, the Consort's face hardened. "Do you think that this is a game? It's survival, boy. Do you want to look like me? Or worse, do you want to end up dead?" Nose flaring, Kukulcan exhaled sharply before continuing.

"You are not to venture out of this trench, do you understand me? If I return to find you gone, so help me.." -- "Fine." -- "I mean it, Kallan." -- "I said fine!" The two stared at one another for a moment before Kukulcan nodded. "I just need you safe," he added on, his tone carrying a touch of tenderness as a hand was placed upon his son's shoulder. "Yeah, yeah, I know," replied Kallan, averting his gaze. "And practice your Kothes, it's terrible," added Kukulcan. "I learned from the best," came Kallan's snarky reply. "Can I go now?" Kukulcan paused, staring at his son for a moment before nodding a singular time.

He watched as his son turned, departing in the opposite direction. "You tell your sister the same thing!" Kukulcan suddenly called after him. "If I catch any of you, any of you, outside of this trench, you're going to face such a punishment that it will go in our records! You tell Naoko this as well, you hear!" The Consort watched as Kallan gave him a thumbs-up before vanishing, a worried look crossing his features.

Lingering momentarily, Kukulcan himself turned, his movements anything but graceful as his tail thrashed against the water, mirroring the turmoil that consumed him. Reaching the entrance of the meeting hall, he slowed his gait upon the sight of Tethys, his Sovereign and wife.

"I dislike our children," he stated upon arrival, grinding his teeth in the process. "They grow more irritating by the minute." Fidgeting with a ring upon his finger, Kukulcan neared Tethys, noting her mirrored annoyance. "Let me guess, Naoko was here?" He joked, offering a chuckle of his own before falling silent. "What are you thinking about?" He asked, growing more sincere as he observed the way she silently spewed. "Can I do anything? You need simply ask." He stood opposite of her and outstretched his fingers, placing them gently on her shoulder. "Have we heard any new sightings of our cousins or the humans they bring with them?"

✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧ Calypso ✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧

Female - Myrleon - Princess - Mentions: N/A

Indirectly mentions: The Clans, Jubal

✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧

A deep gnawing ache set in Calypso’s stomach as she swam mindlessly away from camp, needing some space. It’s only been a few weeks since setting up their new ‘home’. She missed her old home and being able to swim to the surface to watch the sunrise or stargaze. She also missed being warm and safe. Calypso dreaded having to be near the trench, it was so cold and just…dark. No shimmering sunlight, warm waters, or vibrant sea life. The only sea life here creeps her out, so dull and lacking in color. She can’t imagine what they look like deeper down in the trench.

A heavy thought stopped her as she swam further from the make-shift camp and closer to Kothes’ trench. As much as she enjoyed the Solean’s company, there was guilt that they also had to flee their home. They had done their part, keeping among the reefs and blending in to avoid humans. Yet, her Clan brought the humans. Her Clan put them on the run. Though, it wasn’t her Clan.. more so an individual who’d brought humans. She didn’t know any others’ who had wandered into human territory besides her father. Shaking her head, she pushed gut-wrenching thoughts out of her head but still felt the heavy weight of them. Zoning into the trench again, she waited- hoping for even the slightest glimpse of her aloof cousins. Cal has not seen or talked to them since the Solean and Myrleon’s descent onto their land. After Casting one last look at the trench before heading back to camp, seeking her father.

It would be a lie to say Cal didn’t harbor some sort of resentment towards her father. He left the majority of the time to spend time with the humans and now.. The humans have ruined their home. Not just their home, but the Solean’s and now bringing the Kothes’ into this… Calypso groaned and ran a hand over her face in frustration. She had ruled over the Myrleon Clan most of the time as he spent his time on land. Even with her brother by her side, she carried the weight- knowing this Clan would be her’s. She tried whenever possible to learn and hear from her Clan, often seen with Selene- who’s always a helpful aid to her.

Her father has always been..flighty. Cal adored her father, gently touching the necklace he’d given her years before, searching for comfort. She has so many fond memories of her father. He was always teaching her, loving her, and supporting her. Without fail, he’d include her on his adventures and when she couldn’t attend, he’d come back bearing gifts. Though, it was common knowledge among the Clans that he’d prefer to spend his time experiencing human culture. That’s why he taught her at such a young age how to care for the Clan.

Guilt and resentment warred together, building up until tears welled in her eyes. She stopped, breathed deeply, trying to calm herself. Calypso rolled her shoulders and pulled her head up, summoning as much regal and calming energy as possible before entering the camp. She couldn’t risk the remaining members of the Clan to see her so distraught. They all had been through so much, losing too many souls as they fled.

Tohunga

Male | 18 | Kothes | Shaman's Apprentice | Mentions : Tethys, Kukulcan

The young apprentice was doing his daily inventory of the herbs and medicines that was used by him and his master and he found himself looking for a particular herb, ulva , or sea lettuce - a organism that prefers the cool waters and was quite rare and also very useful in many ways ; helpful in preventing goitre, containing many vitamins, and also the blades of the lettuce could be used for burns, which is uncommon but not unheard of. But it was odd that there was no more of the blades. Had they been used recently? Or spoiled? Not to mention they were getting low on stock of dried seahorses and pipefish, and then the cuttlefish bones were growing low and then the sea tortoise power as well. He gave an annoyed sigh as he made notes of the low provisions. It wasn't alarming - as it seemed most of the clan wasn't sick, so he had some time to to restock before they really needed it. He gave a soft hum to himself, noticing that most of these thing would require him to leave the trenches to fetch - which would be a problem, considering the pests that were stationed outside their home. He hoped that the Sovereign would grant him permission to do this, and not think him incompetent for letting the stores grow low at a time like this. But now, he was on top of it. Hopefully, his mentor would appreciate his efforts for them.

The young Kothes swam silently in the dark depths of his home, and he scanned the dark waters for signs of other members of his clan - it seemed most were just going about their day, and he gave a soft hum at that. He soon found his destination ; the meeting room of the Sovereign and her council, he prayed to the Gods he wasn't be presumptuous in appearing before her without a scheduled meeting. He noted that she and the Consort appeared to be talking and that she seemed to be in a rather . . . ill of a mood. And he couldn't blame her, but maybe this wouldn't be the best of times to approach her with sort of bad news and a rather hefty request - considering the circumstances? Oh by the tides, he thought inwardly as he debated just going straight up and asking, knowing that it might foul the mood even more and he didn't want to be the cause of that - but nothing couldn't just not be said, and he'd rather they hear it from him - as opposed to his mentor, bless his heart. And so he took a deep breath and gave a small clearing of his throat to announce his presence in a meek manner, he wasn't one to really approach them - without his mentor at least, so this was a good step for him. And he could feel himself sort of shrink into his nerves as he did this, but it wouldn't do him no good if he couldn't get speak confidently - after all he'd be a Shaman someday and he couldn't hide behind his future apprentice, so he needed to grow a spine and do this now.

"My Sovereign and My Consort," he began respectfully with a bow, towards his superiors, " I apologize for coming unannounced, and to inform you of some mildly annoying news. The health of our clan for the most part is well, and we have most herbs and such for the usage of injuries. However, I noticed we were missing quite a few medicinal herbs and creatures such as dried seahorses, pipe fish, cuttlefish bones, and tortoiseshell powder. And most of these creatures aside from the cuttlefish cannot be found in the trenches." He said hoping they got the point, " now we still have some in stock, but supplies are running low, and I don't want to be underprepared in case someone misfortunate happens - so I am trying to be prepared, and I am asking permission for a foraging party to assist me in collecting the herbs and creatures needed in keeping our people healthy and safe, as I have been entrusted as the apprentice of our Shaman, and I want to do my best to make him and my Sovereign and Consort, proud." He said with earnest, and a tad bit of nervousness, his hands clasped together and his head held down, his voice a bit louder than it usually is - emphasizing that he wanted to truly do this for the Clan.

Selene | F | Myrleon | Healer | Mentions: Indirectly Doris, open

Selene didn’t realize how much she would hate the Abyssal Plain. Yes, she’d expected the darkness, and yes she’d expected the cold, but knowing something and experiencing it were altogether different things. She flexed her hands, willing the faint glow of bioluminescence freckled across their backsides to brighten. The pale green light flickered in response, dimming slightly before gleaming with an intensity that was only marginally brighter than it had been at first. She frowned and let out a frustrated huff before letting her palms drop back to her sides. Selene had never had very strong luminescence, and before moving down here it had never bothered her. Now, during the black nights and navy days, she envied the bright markings of her Solean cousins.

Turning around, Selene made her way into the shelter that had been constructed for her and Doris’s use. Upon seeing the tidy rows of herbs and reagents, her mood improved somewhat, and a small smile crept across her lips. Good, Doris finished unpacking and organizing the supplies we managed to grab before fleeing the shore. Much as she hated to admit it, the healer’s apprentice had been invaluable ever since they arrived in their new camp at the trench’s edge. Selene allowed her gaze to wander over the meager selection, her smile disappearing as she noted the poor condition many of the materials were in. And I have no idea where to get more, she grumbled internally. An idea suddenly struck her. Surely there are outcast merfolk living nearby who have knowledge of the local flora and fauna. Energized by the thought of what discoveries might await her, Selene hastily began looking for her tools, rummaging through half empty boxes and bags.

“Doris!” she called out, in case her apprentice was still nearby, “I’m going to talk to Jubal about putting together a group of Myrleon and Solean in order to learn more about our new environment, don’t wait for me to start sorting the useable supplies from the rotten or damaged!” With her tools in hand, the mermaid rapidly left the ramshackle hut and swam towards the center of the camp where the royal family was temporarily residing.

“Hello? Is anyone there?” Selene called out as she approached the squat dwellings. While Jubal was technically in charge, Selene would honestly much rather speak with Princess Calypso. It had been a long time since Selene had seen Jubal as someone with any authority, and it was rare for her to come to him first with innovations and propositions. Taking a deep breath to calm herself, Selene swam over the threshold and into the dim building, her jade eyes searching for anyone within.
