Chinook || Warrior || M: Border Patrol

The male dipped his head at Axel's order and moved to follow him down their set side of the path. He snorted softly in amusement at Akeena's mild joke over polar bear lunch, but in his mind he hoped that they would not encounter one of those beasts. They were a pain to scare off, and one hit could send a wolf reeling and keep them dizzy for days, if it didn't kill them. He wanted to get home without a massacre.

The tournament would be massacre enough. Even if the losers were not killed altogether throughout the course of the competition, their social standing would be obliterated at any sign of weakness. Pack politics were things he preferred to stay out of for that reason. Well, that and they caused rifts between individuals every year the trials were held.

He pricked his ears and turned as Veracious mentioned that she had not been picked for either side. Chinook felt a little awkward at having forgotten the female had come along. She really was quite a stealthy creature; it seemed to serve her well until it came to instances like this. The large male looked over to Axel, then, and waited for the other brute's verdict.

Natan || Warrior || M: Border Patrol

Natan wrinkled his nose at the thought of an old polar bear kill. With a shake, he responded to Akeena with, "Augh, as long as it doesn't end up stinking us all up for the rest of the day, maybe."

There had been a time or two when he had come across a rotten seal carcass and oh lord did those smell. If Akeena could smell it as well as see it, they were in trouble. If it was just a sight... well, that would be a little better. He moved closer to the female to see if he could smell it, but the scent he caught was -- thankfully -- nothing of the sickly sweet scent of decay. With a satisfied chuff, he began his descent down the hill -- only to stop as he remembered Veracious.

"Oh-- um, I'm sorry," he said, swishing his tail in apology. "I must have gotten too wrapped up in my thoughts."

Of course, it wasn't him who could assign her anywhere, and technically she outranked them all, but he had a habit of apologizing to maintain the peace. It was, in his opinion, a bad habit. He, too, looked from Akeena to Axel, then from Veracious to Chinook.

Arden - Offspring - Mentions: Tavarious and Hunting Patrol

Arden flicked his ear at Rana's direction as a sign of acknowledgement. The female was a quiet one, and her confirmation on joining the chase was probably the first time she had spoken on the patrol thus far. He had also noticed how she had been closer to Artavis out of everyone else on the patrol. Arden was vaguely aware that the female was closest with Artavis out of all of them anyway. He saw the two together sometimes.

When Artavis told Theo to go ahead alone, Arden gave a nod of approval in his friend's direction, who was ordered to go scout ahead alone. The male knew what he was doing, and if he sensed any danger he could alway fall back to the patrol for backup. His thoughts were interrupted when his brother had agreed to keep the groups even and that he would be joining the chasing group. His brother did have a lither frame, which would probably be best suited for it, after all.

Stop. I'm not certain. It's not normal.

When Artavis halted the group, Arden glanced to both of his brothers. His dark gaze settled on Afton, waiting to see if his brother would go investigate the strange bloody scent alone. Losing a single warrior for the time being would be fine, but if this strange scent included any trouble, their hunting patrol would suffer for it. And if they came back with almost nothing... it wouldn't look so good for their ceremony.

Arden gave a nod to Afton who had decided to go alone, thinking along the same lines as him. Bringing another would just lower the hunting success probability. "If it is anything urgent, call for backup. The rest of us will focus on the hunt unless we are called for." He surveyed the group with his amber eyes.

His ears perked up at the sound of distant hooves... Deer. A low growl was released from his throat as his intense gaze narrowed with annoyance. "Something is up. The herd started running, it sounds like. We better get going and check it out before we lose them." A sense of urgency was evident in his voice. First, with this unknown weird bloody scent, and now the herd is fleeing? Coincidence? Probably not.

Without another word, he vanished, following the path that Theo had taken just a couple moments before as he led the rest of them to the deer. But he turned over his shoulder before he trotted off, "For the chasers, keep close. But feel free to go ahead." Without another word, Arden left and began to follow the scent of deer.

Akeena - Warrior - Mentions: Border Patrol

Augh, as long as it doesn't end up stinking us all up for the rest of the day, maybe.

She sent a small grin in Natan's direction. "Well, it's up to you. Is a little seal meal worth the stench? Hopefully our hunting patrol brings us back something, or else I might have to make the trek out here again." She grumbled, but it was obviously still a joke as her hazel eyes held a mirthful twinkle.

The familiar voice of Veracious, their Ambassador, rang in her ears. It surprised her, as she had not noticed the female had joined them already. Her gaze fell on the female for a moment, giving her a nod in greeting before swaying her tail as a motion for her to join them. "Join us, unless Axel wants you with him and Chinook. But obviously Natan and I are the more fun team." She gave a coy grin before beginning into an easy trot through the powdery snow, leaving her paw prints in her wake. Flakes of snow were kicked up, sprinkling her pelt slightly as well as anyone who was unfortunately too close behind her.

"You guys coming?". She called over her shoulder.

Afton - Offspring - Mentions: Hunting Patrol, Tavarious.

Having gotten Arden's permission to go and investigate, Afton was about to leave. In most cases, he would have waited for the leader's permission, but in this case...well, it was a bit different; and he was eager to get on with it. But before he could start off, Arden's voice cut through again, flicking his ears back, he could hear the distant sound of hooves on the ground. The bad feeling he had gotten worsened, dread perhaps? Mingled with a fierceness that often was felt before a fight. Hanging back to see if his brother said anything else, he watched him leave after Theo. Assured he wouldn't miss any important statements, he turned and trotted off, following the scent.

Through the forest the dark wolf moved, muzzle tilted up, shifting towards towards the earth for any scent trails down there. He moved quietly and swiftly, he couldn't take his sweet time finding the source of the blood, and in case whatever or whoever was the cause was nearby, he didn't want to alert them to his presence. He moved with purpose, and with a particular kind of look in his eyes that said he was focused and would gladly fight anyone who got in his way or distracted him while he was tracking. Luckily, no one else was with him, so that wasn't much of a problem here. From what the male could tell, the scent had come from beyond where the deer herd had been before fleeing, so that was his direction. And indeed, he could smell the coppery scent of blood.

After a short interval, the pungent scent of deer became stronger. He thought that it was probably where the herd had originally been grazing. Instead of turning toward it, he veered a wide path around it, avoiding any possible presences of an intruder. He was searching for the blood, not an intruder- if there was one, it was still something that needed to be proven first. His nostrils flared, he still had a bead on the blood scent, and once passed the area, he turned toward the scent again. As he broke into a trot, the smell became stronger, and mingled with the distinctive metallic smell was the scent of another wolf. Nearing the location, he slowed into a walk again, body tense, ears erect and listening for anything out of the ordinary.

The sight of feathers scattered everywhere greeted him. He stopped in surprise for a moment, looking everywhere for anything else. After affirming that nobody else was in the area with him, he moved closer to the feathers. And his yellow gaze found...pieces of dead birds. He stopped and dipped his head to the ground, a head of a bird at his large paws. The heady scent of blood and the musk of an unknown wolf was almost overpowering to him. Despite everything, Afton could not but help blink in astonishment at the scene surrounding him, what in the world? Who would do such a thing? As he broke himself out of his surprise, he moved around, investigating throroughly, although there wasn't much else besides the scattered feathers and remains of birds. Then the scent of the intruder moved off, as he thought it would, towards the direction of the deer-

Alarm shot through him, didn't Theo head that way to scout out the herd? Didn't his brother and some of the hunting party do that way? While sure that they could easily hold their own against a singular wolf, he couldn't help the gnawing worry and dread, it made him anxious by default. Afton shook himself bodily, as if he were shaking water from his pelt, then with his nose to the earth, followed the scent trail of this intruder, moving more stealthier than before and taking care that he was as quiet as he could be. It wouldn't hurt to come up behind them, would it?

Artavis
Offsping || Masculine || Mentions: Arden, Esmeralda, Rana, Afton, Theo, Tavarious, Hunting Patrol

His lips had twitched, his eyes shifting around the forest in the direction of the scent with wariness. His ears had briefly turned to the side, flickering. While Afton's decision to go alone wasn't one that Artavis was comfortable with, he trusted his brother. He had remained quiet as Arden spoke, nodding his own head at the end of his words. "Be careful," he added on briefly. He didn't need to say it, but he felt obligated to nonetheless, even as Afton slipped away behind foliage.

Then, the sound of hooves was heard.

Ears perking, his hackles raised, lowered, and then raised again. Something was wrong. Glancing to Arden, he realized that his brother understood as well. His first thought was that Theo had scared them, but it couldn't be. No, this was direct. This was on purpose, he was almost sure of it. The deer weren't headed away. If it were Theo, the deer would be going in the opposite direction. All Artavis knew is that they had to act quickly if they were to return with a meal.

He had listened to the words spoken by Arden before glancing behind him to the others. "Let's pick up the pace. Keep an eye out." He began to move, his gait turning into a swift trot. "It sounds like the deer have scattered, so why don't we track one and resume the original plan." A pause. "The deer will most likely regroup. So, we have two options. Wait until they regroup and scout out the weakest one like planned, or track a singular one and target that one. What are our thoughts?" Did the group wish to be patient and spend more time on the hunt, or did they want to bring down the deer that they would track right away and save the time of isolating it from the group? There were pros and cons to each, and it all depended on what was decided.

"We're just going to have to work a little bit harder, that's all." Attempting to stay optimistic, Artavis quickened his speed, his body ducking beneath a low tree, expecting the chasers to follow closely behind or alongside of him. Headed towards the direction of the deer, he had slowed, noticing trampled ground ahead. Alright, so this is where one must have gone. The scent was still fresh.

However, there was still Theo to think about. He needed an updating to the plan, and Artavis still had his suspicions that something wasn't right. First, Afton found recent blood, and now this? Call him paranoid if you will, but the male was agitated. "Esme," he suddenly spoke, glancing to the female near him, "take over for me, will you?" Offering her a soft smile, he nodded at her. "Figure out a plan for the hunt. I'm going to find Theo and bring him back. The more of us, the better chances of success." He hoped that Arden wouldn't be offended that he asked Esmeralda. She needed a chance to prove her own leadership if she were to participate in the tournament. This was simply him offering her one. A little opportunity, that was all she needed. A chance to prove her worth.

"I'll be quick." Without a further word, he parted from the group, nodding to Rana and Arden before vanishing behind a thicket. He wold ask Esme later to see if anybody had given her any trouble. That would be something he'd deal with when he returned. For now, he ventured on, his steps quiet and ears perked in hopes of hearing Theo. Surely he would have tried to return by now upon seeing the deer scatter? Where was he? Propelling himself onto a boulder, Artavis peered into the direction of where the deer originally stood before climbing down, continuing his set pace. He had followed Theo's trail, weaving around until his gait slowed.

Where the deer once stood, now remained Theo and a stranger.

He stood there, behind the bushes, watching the two. A trespasser? Had he not known that he was on claimed land? No, he must know, for their borders were strong with evidence. This stranger crossed intentionally, for what reason? Artavis had yet to find out.

"I ask why would you do that wolf.. trying to get caught or are you just plain stupid."

He had heard Theo speak, to which Artavis then made his move. They didn't know this stranger nor what he was capable of. If he reacted badly to Theo's words, well, Artavis wouldn't have that. Besides, maybe he the one that had caused the bloodshed earlier? The one that Afton had gone to inspect? If so, he had questions. So, he approached nonetheless, slowly walking alongside of Theo.

"What's happening here?" He asked in a nonchalant manner, not a hint of aggression in his tone. Rather, it was as if he were talking to a couple of friends. It wasn't known if this stranger was aggressive or not, but Artavis typically approached others with calmness. Besides, there was no reason for hostility. Sure, perhaps this stranger had scared off the deer, and so there was a right to be angry, but the stranger made no move against him, so why cause any further issues?

"I'm Artavis, this here is Theo." Introducing them, he then glanced to the male. "And who might you be?"

Afton - Offspring- Mentions: Theo, Tavarious, Artavis

The dark pelted wolf was on the trail.

He moved slowly, carefully, taking pains to avoid treading on anything that may give away his position. Head down, muzzle nearly brushing the earth as his nostrils took in the unfamiliar scent of an intruder wolf. Bright yellow eyes almost seemed to glow, the shadows caused by the foliage and trees above and the mask of ink-black fur surrounding them making them appear brighter. His muscles bunched and released carefully. The male knew he was nearing the originator of the scent, the track was becoming fresher.

His ears pricked at the sound of voices, he stopped in order to hear better. Recognizing the sound of his brother.

"I'm Artavis, this here is Theo."
A pause.

"And who might you be?"

Ah. Good. He wasn't alone in case this went badly.

Lowering his head, higher this time, almost level with his back. He didn't need the the scent trail to guide him now. He started forward at a walk, even more careful this time. He planned to stay behind this intruder in case of a fight, it was always a good idea to have a warrior stationed at the back of an enemy. Element of surprise. If he was detected, if the wind shifted to slow his scent to them, then it wouldn't change this. He still could lunge forward if the intruder went for Theo or Artavis, and if the interloper turned to attack him, then he'd be two wolves at the back.

Soon, he was very near. Close enough to see the intruder, his pale pelt easily visible. Afton took a few more steps forward, into leaping distance, his pawsteps quiet as he could manage; more like a cat's than a canine's. Then he stopped, yellow eyes glinting with a steely look, ready to jump into action if he needed to. His looked to Theo and Artavis, narrowing his eyes silently at them, warning to not give away his position; he didn't think that would happen, but it always paid to be extra sure of something.

Axel said "Lets move so I we can leave and sorry I forgot you were there come with us." He counted along the way in his head. He walked guessing Chinook was following he spotted something in the distance. Axel ingored it tho just in case in was nothing. He had stopped to wait for a response. He didn't know much about the terrian so much in the swamp so was glad when they were assigned the Tundra. Axel sighed before saying "Lets wait for anyone else that got left behind tho."

+His eyes quickly flicker from the voice the sounded from behind him though his gaze never left the male in front of him as the voice from a familiar male made its way to Theo's head, his sunset folded coated body relaxs slightly though he was still on alert. Perking his ears when the male now stood beside him offering in a gentle and calm voice, their names+
.
"Iam Artvais, and this is Theo....who might you be?"
.
+The words from the alpha sibling where calm but that didn't change Theo's posture if the alpha sibling was doing the calm approach he had to be ready for anything, plus he had to show himself wotlrthy to the other as future Beta some day, with that he growls softly so only his pack member can hear a sign that he was worried but also ready to attack if he was given the word. His tail striaght unmoving showing he was concertated and serious though his eyes told a different story+
.
"He was the one to scare off the deer, I am sorry I should of called for backup when I had the chance"
.
+Theo's voice was soft as he spoke to the other his eyes holding a sign of submission to the other pack mate though his to the stranger it's as if he was never changed. His tail slowly and softly brushes the alpha siblings softly, Theo didn't like talking in front of others but if he had to he would to show he was not going down without a fight+
.
+Though his eyes remained on the stranger at the corner of his eye he spots the familiar fur texture of another wolf, about to growl at the new arrival he quickly gulps it down relaxing when he knew who it was, brushing it off he acts as if he never saw the male Afterall the stranger can not know he is there or less they might have him flee or attack, Theo being the smallest was probably a easy Target for the stranger but then again he has tricks up his paws+

Arden - Offspring - Mentions: Hunting Patrol

Everything was already falling apart. The hunting patrol had barely even begun, yet several things had not gone according to their plan. For one, there was some mysterious bloody scent in the air. Number two, they had sent Afton to go investigate, lowering their patrol numbers. And lastly, it seemed like the deer herd had already scattered before the patrol was able to target one. Now, it seemed like Arden not being appointed the lead of the patrol was the last of his worries.

His ears perked at the voice of hi brother, Artavis, who was mulling over ideas for the hunt.

Wait until they regroup and scout out the weakest one like planned, or track a singular one and target that one. What are our thoughts?

Arden responded gruffly, "Let's track a single one. With all of us together chasing down a single deer, it will be smoother. Plus, if it is already alone and isolated, our chances of success are better."

His dark amber eyes narrowed aa they approached the trampled grass where the herd must have been just moments before. Arden turned to his brother, expecting anything except what had come from his brothers mouth next. He had appointed Esmeralda in charge?! Arden's widened eyes and perked ears were enough to show his surprise. But he recovered quickly, not allowing his disappointment to show. He simply chuffed once, glancing away into the distance as he felt a prickle of annoyance. Why her? How about him? Did his brother not want him to lead? Was he trying to avoid giving Arden power? An upper hand and a chance to prove his worth? The Tournament hadn't even started yet, but his brother was already playing, it seemed.

A low growl thundered from his throat. Great. He cast his glance to the rest of the group. They were now missing three wolves: both his brothers and Theo. It was just him, Rana, Esme, and Larkspur. While the obvious choice was for Arden to be put in charge, his brother had placed Esme as the leader in his absence. Arden sighed, "Alright. Shall we?". His amber eyes stared at Esme. A glimmer of intimidation and maybe even a little jealousy gleamed in his eyes. As if he was testing her, seeing what her first move was in this delicate game that had begun.

Esmeralda

Warrior | F | In tournament | M: Hunting patrol

The white wolf’s ears were perked, she heard the urgency in Arden's voice as he raised concerns about the herd moving. She could start to pick up the fading sound of hooves pounding the ground. As the group moved, Artavis raised two good opinions on how they could tackle hunting the deer, waiting for them to re-group, or pick one out now and go for it. Esme would normally have voted for waiting, but today was different, she rather track one down and not have to try and pick one out of the group once they had settled again, it would save the group some time too.

It seemed as if Arden agreed with that as well, mentioning to success the group could have. Her pace quickened to match the speed Artavis had set off on, trailing just behind him. "Esme," he suddenly spoke, glancing towards her before asking to take over leading the hunt, as well as figure out the plan for the group. She nodded enthusiastically before verbally responding. “Of course, good luck,”

His figure vanished shortly after, and her eyes scanned the area where the herd had formally been before facing the group. She was already at the front so she hardly had to move to see the rest of the patrol, but was quick enough to see Arden’s eyes widen and hear a low growl come from the male's throat. It seemed as if he wasn't happy with Artavis leaving her in charge and she shot a quick apologetic glance at him. Her friend's gaze changed to something more intimidating as he spoke, which she tried to brush off as she addressed the others.

Alright, I believe tracking down a single deer should be our goal. As Arden said, if it’s already alone, our chances of success might increase since we won't have to risk trying to isolate one. To start off I would like us all to track the majority of the heard until we find a trail that suggests one went off alone since a few of them most likely scattered.” She paused, allowing a moment for the others to object or add anything if need be. Her heart was racing, and Esme only hoped she hadn't fumbled her words, or plan in her first real attempt to lead a hunt. Leading up to today she had participated in her fair share of hunting patrols, but never had the opportunity to lead one. Though she agreed to it since she would need more practice for the tournament, and wanted an opportunity to show her leadership skills.

Returning to her plan she shot a quick glance in the direction of the deer. She would need to finish quickly if they were to catch them before they re-grouped. “After that, we can quickly decide the best way to take the deer down once we know the situation better, there are still four of us so I am confident we can handle it.” She finished, motioning for the others to follow her with a jerk of her head, as she turned towards the scent of deer. Taking off at a light jog she gave the others a minute to follow before lengthening her strides and beginning to run after the herd, slowing her pace when the scent grew stronger again.

Her thoughts went to Afton, Theo, and Artavis for a brief moment, and she had hoped she had made the correct choice, the deer were close by.

Chinook || Warrior || M: Border Patrol

Akeena and Natan offered to let Veracious join them right before Axel said she would come along with the two males. Oopsies. He himself did not mind which group Veracious joined; on the one hand, the others had vocalized their suggestion first. On the other, Axel was in charge. A third consideration was that Veracious outranked everyone else, even if she was not leading the patrol herself. How... messy.

It wasn't even of consequence, as far as Chinook knew. It was a trivial matter, yet the nuances of the decisions available made it as twisted and marred as a much more difficult scenario. Natan looked like he'd been caught in an awkward wedge, even though he had barely spoken at all. Must this happen now?

Axel had already begun to move out, so Chinook followed and left the decision entirely up to the female. He noticed the other's brief pause and his eyes were immediately directed towards the tundra's expanse. He couldn't see anything unusual; whatever Axel had spotted, it was not in Chinook's line of sight, and the former seemed relatively unbothered by it anyway.

"Let's wait for anyone else that got left behind, though," Axel had said. The other's words brought Chinook's gaze back on the wolf in front of him and he offered a nod, looking over his shoulder. It had gotten eerily silent for a moment; the fur on his neck began to stand up, and he looked around with caution. He couldn't see or smell anything, yet the sense that something was going to go awry could not be shaken from him.
