Biography Dratoreth liked rabbits. He liked the way they ran, how they hid, and how they ate. He didnÂÂ’t understand that they didnÂÂ’t eat meat. He thought this was strange but wanted to know more. His father, Rildraoth, was a very smart wolf. Dratoreth learned lots from him, but he wanted to know more. He knew his father didnÂÂ’t go out much, and that was where he was different from him. Drat wanted first-hand experience. He wanted to see things with his own eyes. He told his father this, but Rild was horrified and urged him to stay within the safety of the pack, where no danger would come to him. Drat didnÂÂ’t understand this. Why wouldnÂÂ’t Rild let him out with the other pups? What was so bad about curiosity? He became angry and resentful. It wasnÂÂ’t fair the way he was restricted. He watched the others explore while he waited for them to come back. Drat planned to sneak out one day, but he got distracted by a strange animal with long ears. Watched by Sunny Star, she joined him and smiled. He asked her what the creature was; she explained it was a rabbit and they were good for eating. DratÂÂ’s eyes widened. He couldnÂÂ’t believe wolves would eat something that innocent, but again, Sunny said if they didnÂÂ’t eat rabbits they could die. Drat asked why couldnÂÂ’t they eat squirrels or deer instead? But Sunny just shook her head and turned away. The young wolf continued to watch the rabbit, completely forgetting his escape attempt. But when the other pups came back Drat remembered. His anger replaced his interest, and he demanded to know what they saw. Full of excitement, his friends missed the menace in his voice and told him they saw an elk. It was a huge creature with large horns and feet. The adults managed to kill it and they showed Drat the kill. The rabbit suddenly seemed insignificant compared to the might of the elk. He lashed his tail angrily; he couldÂÂ’ve been the one to spot the prey, watched the hunt, boast to friends. But once again, his father had ruined everything. Drat decided to escape. His attempts were going to work this time. But at he was leaving, his fatherÂÂ’s brother Assassin stopped him, asking him where he was going. Dratoreth was lost for words. He really likes his uncle; he was brave and strong and loved adventure and exploring. Assassin shook his head, and told the young wolf about the time he left the pack. He laughed when he remembered his brother trying to stop him, just like Rild tried to stop his son. He told him about the bear, and how all but 3 of his friends were killed. He barely managed to survive himself and get back to the pack, and how Rild had been right, but none of it mattered. DratÂÂ’s eyes widened as he heard the story. He now understood his fatherÂÂ’s fear. Rild didnÂÂ’t want him to end up like his brotherÂÂ’s friends. Dead. And then Dratoreth understood fully, and he explored only with his father, as a team, and was never out of his sight.
