something I've found helpful for this is taking a reference photo and putting it in a digital art program. then you decrease the opacity and break the reference down into shapes

It takes a lot of patience and practice that's for sure.

But I think figuring out how to actually "use" references in a way I understood helped a lot.

That's how I've gotten my art as far as it's come, aside from asking ET a few questions here and there, but whenever I try to learn how to draw more than just the basics, I get so frustrated, the notebook goes flying into the wall and I give up
