Basically she's a stray and at some point in her puphood, nasty people obtained her. Insert drama, and one day she was roughly taken by the nasty man (who used to be a vet but quit) and he choppity chopped and boom, Lark cannot speak anymore. I actually did some research on this, and I think she either had her vocal chords completely removed or her voice box removed

And since Lark can't talk, she can't tell other dogs her name, so they end up calling her names like Silent, Mute One, Quiet and ruder ones like Speechless Mutt
