Also- I'm working on a bit of world-building for A Dream of Darkness- what do you guys think so far? Kletchar clan
Families
Kletchar'Tsen
Kletchar'Crah
Kletchar'Rek
The most powerful clan with the largest number of people in the clan families and the largest amount of villages that belong to them/under their protection.
All in the Kletchar families are heirs of the god Kletchar and were once gifted with magic.
Nestvek clan
Family
Nestvek
The second largest and most powerful clan in the north.
They own most of the land of the four clans, most of which is on the southern and eastern coast of the north.
Their family is smaller than the three Kletchars families, as are the number of villages they protect.
Kastan clan
Family
Kastan
The third most powerful clan in the north and has the most land to the west.
Their family is the smallest of the four clans, but the amount of villages they protect is larger than the Nestveks.
Halerak clan
Family
Halerak
Has the most land in the north of the North.
Their family is larger than the Kastan family, but they hold much fewer villages, as the living so far north is terribly hard.
Bahsthelka clan
Families
Bahst
Helka
The Bahsthelka clan was once glorious and large, owning much of the north and was nearly as powerful as the Kletchars, and much, much older as well. It had two families, named after two sisters who were said to have slain the giants that formed the Frozen Giants Mountains.
They owned the western lands of the north and were a proud and aggressive bunch, with celebrations of death and blood almost monthly.
Sadly, when the southerners first attacked and took over the north, this entire clan was killed when they tried to revolt and fight back.
History
As living in the north isn't easy, with freezing winters and stormy summers, men and women were raised as equals for hundreds of years.
As before real villages existed and the people of the north still lived in caves, huts, and tents, both men and women needed to know how to cook, hunt, and fight. Any kind of skill from any person was a gift back then and would be used to its fullest, not ignored because they were the 'weaker' sex. This tradition saved many lives and clans and there are even some folktales about women saving entire villages when the men were wounded or sick, and of course the other way around.
Alas, this tradition of equality was slowly changed when the Stone Sea formed a bridge between the north and the south. It brought trade to the north, yes, but it also brought southern traditions with it. Southern traders would refuse to speak and trade with women and shunned many villages with women as their protectors. As trade had become an important part of northern life, allowing them to get supplies and items they couldn't get elsewhere to help them through the winter, they started to slowly adapt to the sexist ways of the south.
Though women have always kept their rights in the north, they were more often than not expected to cook and clean and were rarely taught how to hunt or fight.
This changed drastically when the southerners took over the north for the first time.
Many know this as the time of the last Melkrix and many believe it is the south's fault that they died out, but a lot more was lost when the southerners came.
They banned the Northern Tongue, turning the once beautiful language into a dead one. They killed hundreds of northerners, including an entire clan, a large amount of the Kletchars, and children. They forced the gender roles that used to be implied onto women, making it a rule that women could not fight, hunt, or fell trees, as those were jobs for men. Instead, they would cook, clean, and bear children.
After the northerners fought back and pushed the southerners out again, these forced rules were taken away and women could have the choice to fight and hunt as they wished, but the northerners had gotten used to this way of life, and very few women reverted to the old ways till Jaro Kletchar'Tsen returned to the north after the South attacked a second time.
This next part isn't done yet- as apparently, I shouldn't be awake at 2 AM writing this XD
The Sisters
The Frozen giants are a large mountain range on the west coast of the north, and many peaks of these mountains reach far, far beyond the clouds, some used to even say they touched the sun, and that’s why their tips always gleamed so brightly that they nearly blinded you. Now of course we know that this is from the reflection of the snow, but back then people truly thought that those who stood on the top of these mountains could touch the sun, moon, and stars.
The story behind the Frozen Giants is a well-known one and is often a favorite for around the fire or before going to bed.
"This story is about two sisters, Bahst, the eldest, and Helka, the youngest. They were both described to be as wild as a winter wind and as unpredictable as one too.
They lived long before the gods and the Melkrix and much longer before the north and south became one.
In their time giants still roamed the north.
And now, these giants aren't your average hundred-foot human, no. Northern Giants were beasts that walked on four long legs. Their claws could slash rivers onto the land, their footprints created lakes that would stay for the rest of time, their roars could shake the land to its core, their breath could cause storms and winds that lasted for years, and they were immortal.
Giants were not a common sight, though because of their size it was impossible to miss one. They rarely tampered with the rest of the world and usually just roamed the lands endlessly, as if in search of something that would never be found, but when they did interact with humans, it was devastating.
They had no tail and no wings, just four long legs with claws, shoulders that could touch the clouds, and a long flat face with rows of teeth. They were not benevolent creatures and were known to destroy entire villages in seconds in their wrath.
Giants were always covered in a frosty white fur that was said to keep one warm and dry, even when under freezing water.
Our story follows Bahst and Helka when they both decided that it was time to rid their people of the giant that roamed the plains around them, isolating them from all other clans and villages.
The sisters crafted their spears and set out to attack the giant in the west.
When they struck the creature's leg it quickly changed from indifferent to bloodthirsty.
The sisters could see nothing but the Giant's feet till its mouth snapped closed on a tree beside them. It didn't even tear the tree out by its roots, its bite simply severed the tree from its trunk.
That’s when the sisters realized that the Giants had no eyes.
The head disappeared back into the sky before they could strike, but after giving each other a single look, the sisters started stabbing and slashing at the giant's legs. Steaming blood boiled the snow away when it landed on the ground, and if the sisters weren't as nimble as they were, the giant's blood would have melted them away long before they felled the beast.
