Chapter 7

Jaro stared down at the village with a sense of dread and relief.
She’d woken up with the sun barely rising above the horizon and a cold wind. The sky was heavy with light gray clouds and the scent of rain. Part of her shivered from the cold and another from the memory of the last storm she’d witnessed.
The last storm her family had seen before they were slaughtered.
She’d quickly packed everything after taking a sip from a nearby stream and cleaned her wounds. Jaro didn’t have any bandages for her arm anymore, but as long as she didn’t strain it, the wound wouldn’t open again.
While she’d been putting on Storms saddle, she realized she had no coin. Even if she did find a village, she wouldn’t be able to buy any provisions. At least till she remembered that she had a second well-bred and trained mare.
She moved the quickly dwindling bundle of wood and Asterix’s ax to Storms saddle before finally mounting her horse and continue her journey to the south.
The sun had just passed its highest point when she saw the smoke in the sky. Turning Storm and Wolf she rode up a hill at a brisk trot and finally spotted a village, smoke trailing in the sky from several chimneys.
The forest on top of the hill was sparse and disappeared down towards the village; beyond that was only open grassland and sky.
When Jaro had first seen the village, she’d felt relief, the thought of fresh food and water making her stomach rumble, but then she spotted the glimmering armor of the southerners.
It was now or never. If she wanted to figure out what the southerners were doing in the North, in her home, there was no better place or time.
Jaro got off of Storm and securely tied the mare to a tree behind the forest edge, out of sight but close enough if she had to run.
“I’ll be back” she stroked the silver buckskin before grabbing Wolf’s reins and leading her down the hill.
She wasn’t even in the village and her gut was already wrenching itself apart. She’d never ridden Wolf or had much of anything to do with the blood bay, but just the fact that she belonged to Valek, the fact that the mare was one of the only things that Jaro had of her brother, made the thought of selling her to some stranger heartbreaking.
But she had to do it. She needed the coin to survive, to avenge them. Valek would understand. He would have done the same.
Wolf nickered softly as if noticing Jaro’s pain, but when she looked up, she realized it was because of a knight riding over to her on a horse nearly twice the size of Wolf.
“What are you doing here?” the knight asked when he reached her.
“What?”
“You been living in a hole, girl? New rules and regulations. You have to state your business and reason for visiting villages outside of your own.”
“Since when? Last time I checked; Southerners belonged in the South. Your rules don’t apply here” Jaro knew it wasn’t smart, talking like that to a knight. It wasn’t safe either. She was her family's last chance of revenge, and arguing with knights was far from the right thing to do, but when did Jaro ever do anything safe?
The knight laughed, “Oh I think they do. The Clutchers are dead. There’s no one to protect the north anymore. It belongs to the south now.”
Clutcher?
Clutcher?!
She knew it was the southerner’s accent that caused him to pronounce her family's name wrongly, but that didn’t stop her from nearly snapping at the knight. It didn’t stop her from scowling at the man and clenching her fists and jaw.
“State your name and business and I'll leave you be girl. You’ll learn the rules soon enough and I don’t feel like reprimanding you” the knight pushed his horse forward.
“Ry- My name is Rydia T’Schanta. I’m here to sell this horse for my Vaska” her mother’s name was the first name to come to mind aside from her own, and though her blood was boiling, she kept herself calm. Attacking these knights would quickly end in her death.
“All northern words are banned. I’ll let that slip just this once. What is your father’s name?” She gave the knight a deadly glare.
“My Vaska is known as Ulric T’Schanta. A horse breeder in my village.”
“Which village?”
“We don’t have names for our villages. I come from a village in the east. Near the Frozen Giants. I’ve been riding for days, so I would appreciate if I could sell this horse and rest.”
“Rest where?”
“With my Haasah.” The word felt strange on her tongue. She’d never had an aunt, though she remembered her mother mentioning something about having a sister.
“Huzzah? I warned you girl. No northern words.”
“My aunt” that word felt even stranger to say.
The knight stared at her a while longer before nodding. “You may enter the village. But be careful. Not all of us are as patient as myself” she scoffed.
“Oh, I know” she whispered under her breath, Wolf laying her ears flat to her head as she walked past the other horse.
