I feel like once Cal finally figures out how to focus on one thing, his eyes just go straight to the glowy red lasers. In-universe, everyone can see it. People think he's an android.

Cause of his funky brain he is either 'if you talk for more than a minute I will- oh look that leaf has holes that look like a panda!' to 'I have been focusing on time travel for the past ten hours and I haven't moved from this position.'

The only way for Cal to be more romantically oblivious is if he was an actual rock.
